I think I know which RL event you mean. If I'm right, then we in the U.S. all knew -- it was huge news here -- so there was no "surprise" as such except in terms of how they dealt with it. So in that sense, I'm not sure if knowing the RL event ahead of time is officially a spoiler, since the intended audience at the time of broadcast all knew. Not sure if this helps or not, because I can also see why it might be a spoiler now for those people who don't know, but I thought I'd mention it.
