Aww. No, that sounds about right for a first-time watch of B7. It's very reassuring to know that other people have the same reaction to it - aralias did, as well, pretty much. I pretended till halfway through S2 that I was completely unconcerned and not going to be sucked into more than mildly enjoying a cracky old SF show, but it was pretty much not true from the very first episode. My pain on having to wait a few weeks between watching S2 & 3 was great. :-) (Everyone told me that S3 and 4 were rubbish. I disagreed. I loved it ALL, every damn bit of it. Well, maybe not Ben Steed. I will explain Ben Steed when you get to S3, because if there's one thing the newbie does need warning for it's that.)
Vila & Avon were my original two favourites, too. (I don't know any more; I have progressed to loving everyone a completely ridiculous amount.) They were neck and neck until a thing happened, at which point Vila won. ;-)

Gone Fishing by aralias (AU in which Avon, Jenna and Blake find the TARDIS instead of the Liberator in Space Fall.)

Box of Tricks by astrogirl2 (Crossover - Vila meets the Fourth Doctor).
A Week of Menus by vilakins (humorous ficlet in the same style as Vila's Emails. Best bit: No fry-ups during space battles. I shouldn't have to tell you this.)
Btw, B7 fandom uses a couple of specific acronyms that are worth knowing - PWB = Pre-Series (Pre-The Way Back) and PGP = Post-Series (Post Gauda Prime - Post-Blake). If you do end up poking around (and I'd still say don't, because of the way some spoilery things dominate the series, the one thing you absolutely need to avoid is any fic labelled PGP. It took me a long while to get PGP when it was abbreviated. I thought it was some variation on PWP...
