And right away I am struck by something you do so well, which I have noticed before but not mentioned, I think.
“What happened?” he asks. He wants to know what caused the trouble: mechanical failure, human error, the violence of the storm, deliberate sabotage or any combination of those things.
Sapphire shakes her head. She thinks that’s irrelevant here.
The juxtaposition of characters. This is a good thing for the usual reasons: the characters & story are more dynamic, etc - but somehow it seems to carry more weight with S&S, because the question of 'what are they?' is something that is explored multiple times and purposefully remains a mystery - and yet they don't lack for character. So when I'm reading and you tell me what they're doing and how that makes them them, it carries a great deal of weight and, hmm, makes the world that much sharper for me. And you present it with an economy of words which gives it even more weight. Really great stuff.
The thing about your S&S fic is that always I feel absolutely 100% safe going into it, which is such a joy. You're an excellent writer, and you've got such a command of the world and the characters and the feel of it. You know the kinds of things that happen, and why they do. Your ideas are fresh and interesting and really unusual, in the way the show is itself. Your voices are spot-on, and the interactions between the characters are interesting and fun and charged. Every time you write, I have no idea what, exactly, I'll get - but it's always exactly what I wanted :)
