I found it! I found it!
after posting I went on a house clean&search mission and now my 1959 Soule's Dictionary of English Synonyms is back safe on my desk where it belongs.
Some silly person had put it on a
bookshelf
. It doesn't have a cover and it's pages go all funny when you do that. *sighs*
