Well, ''capricious, vain and cruel'' pretty much described all monarchs at the time :D Elizabeth was one of the ''milder'' ones, in some ways, although that's not really saying much, all things considered...

If you want a very good novel about Elizabeth that doesn't quite varnish things, either, I recommend ''Legacy'' by Susan Kay. It's almost a sort of psychological character-study and it made an impression on me.
