Oh, thank you, smallhobbit! Yes, I suppose it is sad, but I think I would have done an injustice to the events of that time (and the war itself) if I hadn't been realistic about it. I like to think that there is a note of hope there, given Maurice's sensible approach. I think it's that whole "Keep calm and carry on" attitude that so many people had to adopt. In any case, I'm glad you think I hit the right tone with this piece. :-)
