Intoabar + insta-rec

1. [community profile] intoabar will be running again soon! Sign-ups open next weekend. It's a very laid back and fun fest - you choose a character to walk into the bar and 1-4 other fandoms, and the mods assign you a random person from those other fandoms for them to meet (in a bar or similar location). And that's it! The results are often very entertaining.

2. It took me a little while to be well enough to read this after heimeldat pointed me in its direction on tumblr, but I finally did, and their S&S fic is as great as their awesome DW fic, so have a wonderful post-Assignment 6 fic:

Escape from Nowhere (5098 words) by Heimeldat
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sapphire and Steel, Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Silver (S&S), Sapphire (S&S), Steel (S&S), The Doctor | Ruth Clayton
Additional Tags: Serial: s06 Assignment Six, Fix-It, Time Travel, Alien Technology, POV Silver, Post-Canon, Escape, Telepathy
Summary: When the trap closes on Sapphire and Steel, Silver is set free with no idea what happened or how to fix it - until a strange woman arrives and offers to help Silver break the trap and free his colleagues.

It is absolutely ridiculous how much I look forward to doing Into a Bar every year. The only question now is whether I should pick the poor character who I've been thinking I should do for at least the last couple of years, or the one from Shiny New Fandom that I really want an excuse to write more of. Oh, who am I kidding? It'll almost certainly be the latter, but I genuinely kind of wish I could do two.

poor other character!

Oh, well, I don't think he'll hold it against me, although he might have found it interesting to meet new people from other universes. :)

They should definitely let you do two if you want! XD

Or three! Because there's also the canon I'm almost done with that I'm loving but probably won't write for, except that it might be fun to have one excuse to write one character in one odd crossover, once.

Then again, it might be just as well they don't let you do that, because that really would be entirely too much to take on. :)

Which canon is that?

Adventure Time, which I have nearly finished binge-watching and have developed great affection for, even though it probably really isn't something I'd be likely to write fic for outside of an odd little exercise like Into a Bar.

And I suppose, whichever you don't choose, you can still throw the fandoms into the ring and see what happens.

Yes, although there are fandoms where I feel reasonably comfortable writing any character who might come up, fandoms where I know I'd really only be able/willing to write certain very specific characters, and, of course, fandoms in the (for IaB purposes) thrilling and dangerous gray area in between. :)

You could always write a fic involving characters from the two fandoms meeting in a bar on your own time, outside of the event!

I could, but I know myself well enough to know I probably won't. :)

although I'd vaguely just assumed it was some sort of children's cartoon?

It is, but it's a children's cartoon in more or less the same way that Avatar: The Last Airbender is. Which is to say: highly entertaining even if you have an adult's sense of humor, surprisingly complex when it comes to characters and worldbuilding, and generally way too good to let the kids keep all to themselves. :)

This one is traditional animation, not CGI. And, heh, it looks, at first blush, very much like it's probably just a simple, colorful thing aimed at young children, until you suddenly realize that the cute fantasy setting is actually post-apocalyptic, and that pretty, sweet Princess Bubblegum of the Candy Kingdom is actually a mad scientist with a disturbingly questionable sense of ethics who is under some real stress from the responsibility of her position, and that the plucky boy hero is actually slowly growing up, and... Well, it's weird and surprising and complicated and sometimes a bit dark, and better on multiple levels than a lot of things I've seen that are supposedly aimed at adults. :)

I'd be extremely leery of Tumblr cartoon fandom myself, though. In my experience, the more pleasant and positive and G-rated the source material, the more toxic and unhinged the fandom often seems to be. But I will probably never understand it.

I think the absolute worst one I ever saw even vaguely go by was The Moomins, which is just ridiculous.

Oh, god, yes, that seems just so wrong.

and having meltdowns at the rest who are writing Moomin pr0n or whatever.

All I can think is, some people are just way too immature to be fans of kids' stuff. :)
