Fic: Evasions (S&S Prompt Ficlet)
Title: Evasions
Author:
thisbluespirit
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 491
Characters/Pairings: Steel, Copper
Warnings None.
Summary: Steel, Copper, a book and possibly flirting… (Pre-canon, 1850s).
(prompt 45: copper & steel - Missing scene & Woke up gay. Or: an impossible prompt I wasn’t going to bother writing, except of course once I thought that, I immediately went off and wrote it. Although this was as far as either of them were prepared to go.)
***
Steel turns around as Copper walks in through the door. “You’ve finished?”
“It was simple enough,” says Copper, joining Steel beside the window, looking past him and out through the small, dirty panes of glass into the street. “And now…”
Steel frowns.
“Time for other things,” Copper finishes with an amused gleam in his eyes. “Yes?”
Steel turns around and looks out through the window himself. There’s nothing to see, only a narrow street on a grey day. Then he swings back to face the other, and gives his best smile. “Why not?”
“It’s so rarely just you and me.” Copper still looks amused.
Steel watches him, but remembers to smile again. “Yes. But you did finish it, didn’t you, Copper? It’s dealt with, that page you found?”
“As I said.” Copper tilts his head fractionally, looking down at Steel. “Of course.”
“Yes. Of course.”
“Then, Steel –”
“Yes.”
Copper smiles as Steel puts a hand to his arm, and then as Steel grips him tightly and won’t let go, the smile vanishes. His arm is now white with frost around Steel’s hand and the cold is spreading.
“You’re not Copper,” Steel says. “You’re not even a very convincing copy. Copper knew what I was doing. You didn’t. You thought…” He doesn’t bother finishing the sentence. It hadn’t understood, had thought him another source of energy, probably only yet another human to draw in and use. He gives a slight, grim smile at the idea. “You were wrong.”
“Well, I trust it was unconvincing,” Copper says. He’s standing behind the two of them, and he raises an eyebrow at his duplicate, now literally frozen and beginning to crack.
Steel looks almost amused. “Yes. It was.”
“I have the page for you,” says Copper. “Two pages, in fact. The missing section was the key, you were right. It contained the resolution – the nature of our troublemaker – and possibly how to deal with it. Ironically, Steel, they used fire.”
“Yes.” Steel holds out a hand.
Copper cautiously passes him the two printed sheets of paper, torn at the sides and yellowing. “I made some alterations to the text, as a precaution. Once I saw it described as a shape-shifter, although –”
In Steel’s hand the paper freezes and crumbles away, the other Copper vanishing along with it. “Alterations. You confused it?”
“I must have done.”
Steel brushes the remnants of the paper from his palms. “It was –” He quirks his mouth into an expression of distaste. “- behaving not unlike Silver.”
“Like…? Oh. Flirting?” says Copper, looking as solemn as usual. “I see.”
“Not something you ever do.” Steel shivers.
Copper gives him a smile. “I believe that’s what they call a generalisation, Steel. And they’re rarely true, and frequently insulting.”
“Copper –”
“Hmm?” he returns, absently. “Oh, yes. Which brings us back to the matter in hand – we need to find a way to warm you up again, don’t you agree?”

(I need to work on this Dreamwidth layout; in the comments it has 'delete' in the place where LJ has 'reply' which is rather unfortunate - I keep nearly deleting nice comments...)

Then I had to laugh out loud at the resolution. :D

I feel I've really achieved something now. Thanks for reading!

I leave you for four months (has it really been four months??) and you're writing delicious pre-slash.
And, yes, I think it must have been. At any rate, it was early Sept that I accidentally generated this ridiculous list of S&S prompts (which I am still kind of in love with ♥) and now I am shameless. With Elements, anyway. Probably not with actual human beings. But you never know. So: LOLOLOL. Yes, this is what I do when you're not looking.

Harry & Jo - May-December relationship & Secret identity discovered
Beth & Colin - Confession & Doppelganger
Jools & Malcolm - Holiday & Masquerade
Beth & Lucas - Crackfic & Injury
Zaf - Forbidden romance & Kidfic
Ros - Secret admirer & Penance and reform
Jo & Jools - Hurt/Comfort & Chekhov's gun
Jools & Zaf - Insomnia & Star-crossed lovers
Lucas & Juliet - Deus Ex Machina & Public display of affection
Malcolm - Domesticity & Angst
(You can have these as a present; I have 100 Element prompts to be going on with. ;-p)

It's not me, it's the generator thingy. I was bored when I went back to the page that had the link. But those were literally the first 10 it gave me. I copied for your amusement and then ran away hastily before it did anything more awesome.
I think when I rewatch Spooks (which I bet I will finally be able to do next year) I might try it again. I am rubbish at doing proper Spooks fic, I die of terror in the attempt, but I can do daft things like nobody's business when my brain is more like usual.

Can I just say I'm looking very much forward to that day :D

But: :-)
And I had to link you when I saw CJ/Toby apocalypse fic. I seriously wondered if they'd actually written it for you, but it didn't seem to be so.

YOU ARE EVIL
*smug*
If you ever write any of these, I shall probably die knowing tha my purpose in life was finally achieved. (Well. I'll try not to, that would be silly.)

And, while not friendly like that, Copper is a bit friendlier with Elements who aren't Silver (he thinks Silver needs squashing as often as possible, I don't know why.)
Steel just seems v wary of nearly everything and everyone, really. Except Sapphire, but sometimes her too.
And  I think I'm further along (down?) that slope than you know. My Elements fic is getting pretty shameless; you haven't seen all of them. Or the things I've got in my notebook. ;-p (Although if you meant explicit pr0n of any sort, you needn't fear. I can only do that if I learn how not to die of sheer embarrassment in the process.)
no subject
Yes, he's always on the look-out for trouble, Steel. And, you know, in his line of work...
I'm shocked! ;D I hope that notebook is well-guarded, preferably in some sort of bank vault or something. Imagine the scandal if it got out! O.o
no subject
Don't worry, I have the best precaution of all - my handwriting's illegible. ;-p (And as I'm sure you can imagine, it's not that scandalous, it's just funny about what I happened to be in the middle of typing up when you said that. You should be able to see why when I post it.)
I think the ficlet where I said the most about Copper's opinions of Silver was this one with Sapphire and Copper. But probably, it's like an iceberg and most of it is in my head. Um, if you know what I mean...
