Of Memes and Morals

Since I took advantage of this meme to make requests of

persiflage_1, I must reciprocate!!

The first ten people to comment in this post get to request a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing from me. In return, requesters should post this in their journal, offering in return fanworks of the kind they enjoy doing. Fic? Icons? Meta?

Probably not a good idea in many ways but I like a challenge. (Although if

primsong is thinking of anything along the lines of the suggestion she gave last time I did a meme, I may run away).

Edit: I should add, I'm happy to do anything, not just DW provided I know it in some way, having read/watched/written it. (As I said, challenge is fun.)

Oh, and here's the 'moral' for Image of the Fendahl from DWM's Everything I Needed To Know About Life I learned From... The Fourth Doctor (by Gareth Roberts). From 2000 - I feel ancient!!

Granny Tyler knew there was something wrong up at old Fetch Priory when them scientists moved in. I mean, imagine you got a new a job and your colleagues were called Dr Fendelman, Max Stael, Thea Ransome and Adam Colby. Why don't they just call themselves 'Professor Crazy', 'Adolf Evil', 'Wendy Doomed' and 'Johnny Squarejaw' and have done with it?

Moral - Beware people with made-up sounding names.

(I re-read the whole series after finding it and giggled again. These things amuse me.)

“Better not be,” said Hex. “You’ve got a mind like a sewer.”

Martha glared. “Give it here! I’ll fix it, Hex – that’s a promise.”

“Spoilsport,” said Jack.

I know. I was worried when the original story ended up where it did, but it seemed determined to go that way. Now, thanks to you, I have a bizarre AU world where Hex is inappropriately working for Torchwood!!

Martha will sort it all out, however. :-)

I like Hex working for TW - I think he and Martha make a great team - and with Jack in the mix, it's just loads of fun.

(PS Have just finished The Face of a Stranger. Deeply satisfying read - thanks for the rec. And when are we getting the fic with him?)

I'm glad you liked it. The Monk and Hester series are my favourites of hers, but I also very much liked the WWI quintet she did as well.

And, um, it's growing in longhand. Not too long, but I have to get some other things done first!

Hehe, this AU!TW is highly amusing. Having not yet fulfilled my own meme duties to you I probably shouldn't give a prompt, especially since you're being so very nice and proofing for me, but...

You can, but bear with me - I did the other two first and they took rather a while paring back down to drabble-size!!

Thanks for your patience & also for the prompt, because it would never have occurred to me to write this else and it was fun to do. It also became a double drabble.

Sarah was getting used – if anyone could – to exploring new worlds, to the weirdness and wonderfulness of travelling with the Doctor, but nothing had quite prepared her for this.

She was worried she might lose herself. Not that she was someone who wasted more hours than she needed to thinking about clothes, but this – oh, this was something else again.

It was as if every item of costumery from across the whole universe had landed in one impossibly large space. When the Doctor had told her to get something from the wardrobe, she’d envisaged an item of furniture, not this endless room. He rarely even changed his own outfit much, so that hadn’t given her an inkling, although she supposed she really should have known by now.

She balanced two more hats on her head and grinned as she looked in a long mirror nearby and tried to do a twirl in the oversized blue dress that brought her falling to the floor in a heap of material, hats, coats and her now-revealed hefty lace petticoat and she laughed helplessly at her silliness.

It was a good thing she was a well-read girl who’d left the door open behind her.

Weee! Lovely! Thank you so much. The mental image of Sarah-Jane balancing hats on her head is just perfect (I get the impression that Sarah-Jane for whatever traumatic-childhood-reason really does enjoy playing dress-up, that, and her spinning about in Victoria's dress in Pyramids, and the way her outfit would change every other scene in Three's era...) and then the ending! Which tops it all off, and, considering the TARDIS, is very, very appropriate.

I'm glad you liked it. I started with the last line and worked backwards, which was new for me. :-) Yes, about the only companion who enjoyed dressing up as much or more than Sarah was Vicki.

Being Ruth and the Doctor?

If it was Ruth and Harry you meant, or Zaf and Jo, I apologise. I'll now have to post this on adwc and hope it doesn't mystify everyone. Mind you, that's kind of par for the course. So, meanwhile, back at This Time Round...

Polly had not forgotten Ruth Evershed’s offer of cover – she was an analyst, she wasn’t the Doctor, nor insane – what else did one need?

“So,” Polly said, at the door. “You’ve got the list – don’t let anyone in who’s not on it, especially duplicates. They’re positively the limit. And – this is vital – don’t agree to any of the Doctor’s mad ideas.”

She smiled and hugged the clipboard. “Understood.”

Ruth watched her leave with a gleam in her eye.

“Good!” said Two, emerging from the shadows. “I thought she’d never go. Let’s liven things up a bit, shall we?”

Can I ask for something with Leela in it, seeing as you write her so well (I'm thinking of the Robots of Death sequel thing in your Happy Endings fic)? Leela on Gallifrey, post-Invasion of Time?

Leela folded her arms and glared at the Castellan.

The irate Time Lord snapped, “Well? Arrest her!”

Andred coughed. “You wish me to arrest my wife?”

“I was saving his life,” said Leela. “Next time I shall not.”

The Castellan turned, a shredded fur robe in his hands. “This was not some dangerous creature! We are civilised.”

“It was devouring you,” she said, blue eyes widening.

Andred intervened. “Yes, sir, I’ll just … arrest her right now. This way.”

With one last daggers look, she followed him.

“I did not truly think it a creature,” she said, subdued outside. “He said I was a stupid savage, so I acted like one.”

“I see.” His mouth twitched.

“You should scold me.”

“You know you’re not stupid, and you know to be better than the Castellan. What is there to say? Besides, I’m not rash enough to lecture while you’re armed.”

“I am sorry,” said Leela, sheathing the blade. “You are right; it was not wise. But it was very satisfying.”

“What’s more, I don’t want my heart cut out now I’ve found a use for it.”

Leela gave an illuminating, beatific smile. “For you, I shall not kill him.”

“Thank you.”

Entirely. But, still, funny lines!

Leela, the fourth doctor's companion, abruptly decides to stay with a guard on gallifrey (Andred) at the end of The Invasion of Time. There has been no indication in the 6 preceding episodes that she liked him. (Well, aside from the brief hints that the two actors involved desperately try to get into it).

I would say it's the most unlikely exit any companon gets, but since Peri married Brian Blessed (although that may have been a lie) and Mel ran off with a rogue called Glitz (although she may have been after the frozen vegetables), I'm not sure. I based my Happy Endings series around this premise, because if Leela can stay and marry Andred, any companion could have stayed and married any other character they met. :-)

Far more explanation than you wanted, eh? Not that I don't want DW always to be as good as possible, but sometimes I revel in its wonderful silliness. And despite all that, it's very easy to write quite sweet Leela/Andred fic, which only adds to the fun. :-D

(I'll spare you the whole fan theory about it, that may even mean the two of the being the Doctor's parents. Which is far, far more unlikely.)

Oooo... Now that you've said that I'll never be able to get it out of my head; you do know that don't you?? Adorable ficlet as well. I can totally see Leela attacking the Castellan's robe, and then playing dumb; she's a clever one that Leela!

I'm sorry; I've just spoiled the innocence of someone who's not read too many NAs!! It's only ever hinted at, sort of, possibly as one of the explanations. Certainly they are supposed to have the first child not to born out of a loom in centuries and I really don't want to talk about this anymore. :-D

Heh. I have two other Happy Endings in the works for Leela. Aside from her mad departure, she's just the Alpha Female whatever the planet. It amuses me no end. :-)

That was brilliant! And very true to Leela's character; “For you, I shall not kill him.” That's her, to the life (although as you point out, there was more than one characterisation of Leela during her tenure as a companion, which is a little unusual; you would have thought Bob Holmes would have been on the case). I can't wait to see more of the Happy Endings; they're very good, both the humorous ones and the slightly more serious ones too.

And, as to characterisation, I imagine that it was down to both scripts being written simultaneously and both working off different aspects of Leela from Face of Evil. (Robert Holmes works on her savagery and tries to do Pygmalion, while Chris Boucher uses her wisdom based on experience and instinct to counter the science and civilisation around her and the whole set up of the two stories is very different. It probably didn't look wildly different on the page.)

I have about 5 of the Happy Endings half-written at the moment, although one is rapidly becoming an UnHappy Ending. So it's good to know someone won't mind reading them!!! Hopefully the one for Talons will be around soon. :-)

As self-damning as it may be to admit it, I can totally see Leela/Litefoot, if that's your angle; their little dinner scene together was strangely touching, from my point of view, anyway. As for Jago, I always had the impression that there was some shrill, shrewish Mrs Jago somewhere off-camera; he just seemed like that sort of character!

Heh heh. I 'll post the Talons one soon, as I've only the last part to type up and it's already written in rough. *grins evilly*

Actually, I think that dinner scene is one of my favourite Who moments. And now that you mention it, I can entirely see that Jago scenario, although on the other hand I can also see him having hastily slid out of getting hitched at all, coward that he is.

Leela is such a flirt, you can do Leela/Anyone. At least, so i've been discovering lately. :-D
