Quick Notes

* It's a [community profile] fic_rush weekend! If you want company, accountability or whatever to cheer you on in your attempts to write fic/letters/essays/do laundry/wrangle penguins, you can drop in at any point until midnight Sunday (GMT), even if only for an hour.

* I have been trying to reconstruct my tumblr here: https://thisbluespirit.tumblr.com/

I've been trying to find reblogs of my stuff and it's so hard to search, because reblogs don't appear in searches, so you have to find someone who may have reblogged it and search their tumblr, and they may or may not have an accessible archive/tags or whatever. And, of course, some stuff was never reblogged and is gone. The worst thing about this is that I have lost half of my Favourite Episodes of Old Telly posts, which would have been the first thing I'd have saved if I'd been deliberately deleting it.

(Also Mariocki found my Favourite Episodes post for "My Life's My Own" for Public Eye and tumblr immediately marked it as blocked adult material, so I had to remake it and repost and then appeal to get it unblocked. Stuff them and their idiot bots! There are some hands in it; they really don't like hands at all, do they? Evil hands!

And, yes, it damn well is adult material! It's a wonderful, grown-up episode of 1960s TV that's progressive, complex and messy and human, well played, well written, and one of the best episodes of any television series I've ever seen. So now they made me angry, even if a bit irrationally.)

There's absolutely nothing irrational about being mad at Tumblr's wrongheadedness!

Quite right too!

Good luck!

(Oh, you're very welcome! I'm so glad it's been useful to you!)

Oh, damn! *smites tumblr*

The 18th Century fashion blog I was following on tumblr got flagged for posts of fully-clothed 18th Century ladies in big hats, and also for a post of drawings of Marie Antoinette and her siblings as children. They were showing their hands, though, so I suppose it was only to be expected.

I don't think that's at all irrational. In a way, I can understand them wanting to crack down on 18-rated material, if it makes things awkward for them internationally. They're clearly going about it the wrong way though, and they're penalising so many people in the process, for such ridiculous reasons.

They never wanted to become a fandom thing though, so maybe, in a way, this is all intentional. Can't help thinking it's going to cost them in the long run though. And how dare they block Alfred Burke! If they're so anti-hands, how do they do on James Maxwell and his hand-holding?

Given so many artists' love of the human form, it does seem a particularly stupid move, doesn't it. So much classical art, from pre-hang up days, would surely be banned for starters. And if an artist can't draw a human figure without getting censured then we're really in a daft place. Although maybe they're okay painting nudes, as long as the hands aren't visible...

I never tumbled (occasionally looked, though) in large part because I have an abiding distrust for Yahoo and all it touched, so I'm not personally invested in their idiotic and draconian censorship.

I just note that if you take them literally there should be nothing but children using the site to show off their refrigerator drawings of stick people. Because you're right- ADULT doesn't mean what they're using it to mean.

They aren't censoring illegal images (children in sexual images, e.g.) or 'pornography' (printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings.) or 'erotica' (artistic work that deals substantively with subject matter that is erotically stimulating or sexually arousing but is not pornographic), but any image that fits a really bad profiling system based on ... I suspect the boss's private stash of boobs and bobs pics...

Bad idea, thumblr. Bad. (not a typo. they should get their thumb out and fix this mess.)

It's not just that their policy is terrible (I mean, it's their business, if they want to drive away all their customers, that's their choice), it's that they're not even able to enforce their own rules properly.

If you want a laugh, you can find posts where people show images that were censored- including pics Curiosity took of landscape on Mars, mainstream cartoon characters, abstract shapes, etc.

If it's beige and round and has a darker brown circle inside it- well, that's obviously a 'female presenting nipple' (OMG what a ridiculous thing to say).

Medical braces for people's hands. Picture of leafless trees on a misty morning. Screenshots of a fully dressed person (wearing red jumpsuit) from a TV show.

Historic photos of people- this post just shows a sample. These are GREAT pics.

The actor and Tumblr user Wil Wheaton posted one example: an image search for “beautiful men kissing”, which was flagged as explicit “within 30 seconds of me posting it”.

“These images are not explicit,” Wheaton wrote. “These pictures show two adults, engaging in consensual kissing. That’s it. It isn’t violent, it isn’t pornographic. It’s literally just two adult humans sharing a kiss.”

Other users chronicled flagged posts, including historical images of (clothed) women of colour, a photoset of the actor Sebastian Stan wearing a selection of suits with no socks on, an oil painting of Christ wearing a loincloth, a still of ballet dancers and a drawing of Wonder Woman carrying fellow superhero Harley Quinn. None of the images violate Tumblr’s stated policy.

I did find some fun blogs when I got curious. This historical one is lovely and the following post about flagging made me snicker.

Heads will roll, I say, heads will roll. Or Tumbl as it were. ;^)

I don't blame you for being angry. Sometimes, the rules are ridiculous!
