Multifandom Genderswap Recs List
I decided on getting my bingo card last year that I would make a rec set for the square "Genderswap". And finally, after discovering some great fanworks I'd never have otherwise seen, here it is.
The works on this list are mainly Rule 63/Always Another Gender AUs with some male-to-female regeneration works for Doctor Who and bodyswap fic where the bodyswapped characters are male and female.
Always Another Gender/Rule 63
(Always Another Gender = AU where one (or more) individual characters have always been a different gender; Rule 63 AUs = everyone has always been a different gender).
Arthurian Myths
Idylls of the Queen by
toujours_nigel
(Teen, 1961 words. Arthur/Guinevere, Morgan le Fay.) Arthes is a body stitched together with rawhide and silk, needles dipped in boiling wine, and the sure and untender hands of battleground surgeons.
A vivid, compelling, and plausible look at the warrior queen Arthes navigating the wedding night with her young groom, Gwynfor.
Babylon 5
Feminine Wiles by
Avelera
(NR, 1403 words. Lennier, Londo Mollari.) Londra Mollari shows the young Minbari acolyte Lennari how to cheat at cards, using the power of boobs. A Babylon 5, Rule 63 Genderswap fic. For the Tumblr challenge "Babylon 63".
What it says, and the interactions of the two are a delight. If Londo had been female, this is surely exactly how this scene would have gone.
Doctor Who
Genderbent Who by
surrenderdammit
(G, Art. Doctors 1-11, Jack Harkness, The Master.) My designs for the genderbent version of the 1st to 11th Doctor, as well as Jack Harkness and a temporary design of the Master.
Fanart imagining how the first Eleven Doctors might have looked in a Rule 63 universe. The art is fun, plausible, full of character, and the artist has had a lot of fun with adapting each Doctor's costume.
The Flash
All My Power, All My Glory by
DoreyG
(G, 3359 words. Leonard Snart/Barry Allen, Lisa Snart, Joe West.) Leonora Snart is born at exactly midnight on the 21st of December.
Dark, well written, and plausible exploration of the similarities and differences life of Leonora Snart and her encounters with the Flash in a Rule 63 universe.
Historical RPF
And trewe of love thise women were echoon by
Lilliburlero (15th C/Shakespeare's Henry V)
(Not Rated (G), 463 words. Fluellen/Gower.) These entries were thought too recondite to include in Women in Late Medieval England and Wales: A Biographical Dictionary, eds Charlotte A. Dodd, Pamela Laredo Marlow, and Thomasine Merrick (Streweminster: Streweminster University Press, 2013). They are reproduced here in the interests of open access to research and scholarship.
I love a bit of metafiction and these historical biographical dictionary entries are lovely and much can be read between the lines.
Wrapt in a Woman's Hide by
Gileonnen (15th C/Shakespeare's Henry VI)
(Teen, 1144 words. Richard III/Edward of Lancaster, George Plantagenet Duke of Clarence, Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI.) The youngest child of Richard of York is a daughter--and the women of York make good use of their marriages.
Brilliant AU of Shakespeare's Richard; it's an excellent and sharp piece that's got teeth.
past imperfect by
fandomsruinedmylife (15thC/16thC)
(G, 2965 words. Henry VII/Elizabeth of York, Margaret Beaufort, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Henry VIII, Mary I, Elizabeth I, Edward VI.)or, glimpses into eight worlds where history unfolded differently thanks to an accident of birth
What it says on the tin - a well written series of fascinating alternate history vignettes, looking at what might have happened had eight different figures of the Tudor era been a different gender. (Or the patriarchy sucks, as the author says.)
a dragon for a rose by
redluna (15th C/The White Queen)
(G, 682 words. Elizabeth of York/Henry VII.) No matter what form their story may take, finding one another will always remain inevitable.
Nicely done & sweet ficlet with a young King Edward making an unexpected choice of bride.
Jane Eyre
tell me you can't bear a room that i'm not in by
TheTeaIsAddictive
(Teen, 1640 words. Jane Eyre/Edward Rochester.) She’d had a stern mental talk with herself the whole way back from Gateshead; flirting with your coworker is a bad idea. Flirting with your boss is even worse. Flirting with your probably-already-engaged boss who has a seven-year-old kid, and who keeps asking you to make flower arrangements for her fiancé? A terrible idea. And yet, Jane keeps doing it.
A modern lesbian florist AU of Jane Eyre is not something I expected to find myself reccing, but it's a lot of fun.
Lord of the Rings
we also are daughters of the great by
elizabeth
(G, 1784 words. Eowyn/Faramir.) Adrift after her victory over the Witch-king, Éowyn finds herself trapped in the Houses of Healing, with no one to grant her freedom. The Steward Denethor is dead, slain on the Pelennor. Théoden is alive, thanks to Gandalf, but has left her behind once more, leading the Rohirrim to battle against Mordor. With him is Éomer, Aragorn, Imrahil of Dol Amroth, everyone who might free Éowyn from this new cage. Everyone, it turns out, except the Steward's daughter.
Quiet and thoughtful AU in which two daughters of great lords meet in the Houses of Healing.
Pride & Prejudice
Five Sons Mr and Mrs Bennet Never Had by by
biichan
(G, 3929 words. Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy, Caroline Bingley, Mary Bennet, George Wickham, Lydia Bennet, Kitty Bennet.) ...for, of course, they were to have a son. This son was to join in cutting off the entail, as soon as he should be of age... (A series of what-ifs exploring in turn the possibilities had any of the Bennet girls been born male.)
Great and enjoyable exploration of what would have happened had each of the Bennet sisters been boys in turn. It's really hard to even decide on a favourite segment.
Red Dwarf
Speechless by
alitbitmoody
(G, 254 words. Dave Lister/Arnold Rimmer.) Prompt 14: "Things you said after you kissed me." Rimmer's not saying much.
Because Rimmer is still Rimmer, no matter what, and the end line is perfect.
The West Wing
an american girl raised on promises by
rillrill
(Teen, 2593 words. Sam Seaborn/Ainsley Hayes, Josh Lyman.) Sam is twenty-eight when she realizes that moving ahead in her field means becoming the worst kind of person. As much as she feels the pressure to ice over, to form a steel-plated exoskeleton, she can’t do it. She tosses and turns and eventually calls Josh Lyman. Always-a-girl!Sam gender swap AU. Exactly what it says on the tin.
Sharp, observant look at how Sam's life might have been both different and in some ways the same, if he'd been born Samantha Seaborn.
Genderswap/Bodyswap
Angel
Angel Is a Girl by
Ruuger
(Teen, drabble. Angel, Spike.) A drabble where Angel is a girl and Spike is a pig.
What it says. :-D (Except Spike isn't an actual pig.)
Blake's 7
Mindswap by
Manna
(NR, 4383 words. Kerr Avon/Cally.)
A really good post-episode piece following on from Ultraworld, where Avon and Cally do get bodyswapped, that explores the idea seriously, rather than as crack. (It's tagged Avon/Cally, but has underlying Blake/Avon.)
Doctor Who
A TARDIS of One's Own (Or, What Should Have Happened in Exile) by
nostalgia
(Teen, 3076 words. Weir!Doctor/The Master (Delgado), Liz Shaw, Mike Yates, Jo Grant, the Brigadier, Kate Stewart, Benton.) She's stuck on Earth, feminism hasn't quite taken hold, and her best enemy wants into her pants. The Doctor's exile on Earth, remixed somewhat.
What it says on the tin - this is a brilliant and, more importantly, very funny and much better version of the Big Finish Unbound audio Exile where the Doctor regenerates into a woman for the first time.
and you've got their shoes by
netgirl_y2k
(G, 2839 words. Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, Martha Jones.) The Doctor and Donna have an accident with a bodyswap machine, and the Doctor refuses to carry a handbag.
Do I really need to say more than Ten, Donna and bodyswap here? It's everything that premise ought to be - and an excellent note to end this rec set on.
The works on this list are mainly Rule 63/Always Another Gender AUs with some male-to-female regeneration works for Doctor Who and bodyswap fic where the bodyswapped characters are male and female.
