I started this on 27th Feb 2021 for [community profile] 100fandomicons and have finally completed it, after taking longer than anybody else ever has, which I suppose is one claim to fame. (You can see the fandoms if you hover over the icons.)

I was in exactly the sort of in between mood of not being quite up to any of my usual things and wanting to write something, that calls for the Poetry Meme - and I actually managed to do it this time! \o/ (I had two goes at it last year and only did half the prompts each.)

1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

2: Visit this site* to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list them in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.

4: Bravo! Have a cookie.

I'm a bit too tired to do what I wanted to do this evening (although I have done what I needed to do, so there's that). Anyway, I remembered I made a DW companion-swap generator that one time!

Obv I have to share some results, which either amused me or I would absolutely read, or both:

The Twelfth Doctor and Bernice in an adventure with a stolen vehicle, armed only with their wits and art.

The Sixth Doctor and Clara in an adventure with a double bluff that backfires, armed only with their wits and cue cards.

The Thirteenth Doctor and Wilf in an adventure with the Sea Devils, armed only with their wits and one telephone call.

The Seventh Doctor and Tegan and Turlough in an adventure inside a lighthouse, armed only with their wits and a secret escape route.

The Eleventh Doctor and Jackie in an adventure overthrowing the government, armed only with their wits and some cheating.

The Ninth Doctor and Yaz and Dan in an adventure with a stuck button, armed only with their wits and a candle.

The Sixth Doctor and Anji in an adventure with vampires, armed only with their wits and Bessie.

And, of course, since it is the funniest, also some Unconventional Courtship Generator summaries under here )

I went out (briefly, with my friend, to town), on Weds, am still not recovered (bah), but feeling a bit better today, I think. Anyway, two nice fannish things:

1. B7 is going to be released on blu-ray! S1 coming out soon! (They'll finally include the Making Of documentaries that got left off the DVDs.)

2. I idly looked at Sister Boniface Mysteries on AO3 as I do sometimes, and this time there was a delightful fic. Well. delightful for me, less so for Sam, but it's traditional to suffer for fic:

Swing (1063 words) by ImaginaryThings24
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sister Boniface Mysteries (TV)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Sister Boniface & Sam Gillespie (Sister Boniface)
Characters: Sam Gillespie (Sister Boniface), Sister Boniface (Father Brown), Reverend Mother Adrian
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, accidental injury, Bleeding, Bad Things Happen Bingo
Series: Part 5 of General Fandom Whump
Summary:

“There’s been a slight accident,” Sister Boniface says.

“I suspected as much,” Reverend Mother Adrian says. “Since Inspector Gillespie is bleeding all over the floor.”

These things will happen to try the Reverend Mother, especially if Sister Boniface is around. Top notch voices. I'm only surprised this has never happened in an ep. XD

I've still not really been around properly, although hopefully that should improve again soon, fingers crossed. Both because I've been quite ill most of this summer, for reasons, but also because the ancient borrowed laptop I was using the last couple of summers to get over the lack of access to my PC now sometimes makes sparks when I plug it in and I feel this is a bad sign in an electrical appliance, so I have been saving to only use at great need. ETA: Not sparks, that was a bad description; a back surge from the charger, I think, and I saw a blue flash. (obv = saprks when typing wildly at night.)

Anyway, the other day when the weather cooled down for a couple, I had a go at the poetry meme, but I was too tired/ill to do the full thing. But since I also did that earlier in the year, I realised between the two I had five efforts. And if I post it, now with new working replacement random poetry site links (!! \o/ !!), maybe it'll spread about the place again, and that'd be nice.

Smushed results of two attempts under the cut )
* I found two replacement sites. This one seemed the nearest match to the lost one (although so far it has more of a Byron fixation than an Emily Dickenson one), but this one also works too.

Today hasn't been the greatest day healthwise (again), but not a bad one in any other sense! And I thought I would make a quick post of 3 things that have brightened it and guess what? I have already forgotten the third thing as usual. (oh hai brain fog.)

1. I made a gifset of The Winslow Boy (1999) for tumblr. Which I was highly pleased with in itself (until I realised that the aspect ratio is still Not Absolutely Right on most of them, but shhhh. i posted before i discovered that, in the midst of my shiny achievement smugness, alas). But as you can see if you click the link, today a stranger on the internet reblogged it with the best kind of tags - that it had caused them to watch it and love it too! \o/

It is nice to have engendered a tiny bit of happiness in the world. ♥

2. Random new Blake's 7 vid appeared on my flist! I nearly fell over and had to re-check the fandom three times, but it was B7 and it's good fun, for those who would be interested over here.

3. Please insert your own third thing here. The management apologises for its repeated brain failure. Works are ongoing, but may be pretty much permanent at this point. ;-p

Now, I think yesterday I edited 2 short fic pieces into submission and if that is so, I might even be able to post one, but I shall go and see. ♥

and in less good things: my bookmarking site i use seems to be entering its death throes, which is a bit worrrying. i suppose i must endeavour to Find Another.
thisbluespirit: (b7 - avon)
I am currently just a deep well of sadness, so it seems appropriate enough to post this, which of course I meant to post two days ago when I reblogged it again on tumblr. I am being bad at getting round to crossposting and thus having these safely stored up here, but here's no. 2.

(I was not normally doing episodes for Old TV that actually has a fandom, but I made this two years ago when we hit the 40th anniversary of Gauda Prime. And it genuinely is one of my fave episodes of anything, because sometimes I like to eat tragedy up with a spoon and this is the awesome kind.)

Spoilers for Blake's 7 under here, obviously. do not click if you do not want spoilers for B7! )

(Some of these episodes aren't "here's my cathartic episodes of sadness I rewatch a lot" I swear.)

Anyway, belated Happy Gauda Prime Day to those of us who celebrate commiserate! ♥

I am now ill/tired from having visitors, although not too bad, really, and we had a very nice time (there were even brownies as well as ice cream before Mum and Dad left, amazing.) In the meantime, have three very random things indeed.

1. I watched S2 of The Crown in time to give it back to Mum. It was v good, but there was one deeply weird moment where I realised a minor character was Jacqui Chan, who was one of the regulars in The Hidden Truth with James Maxwell. Idk why that is weirder than all the other real people, but I suppose you don't expect random old telly people to get played by other people in 21st tv unless they're much better known.

2. I looked up an actor to see who they were the other day because I recognised them but not their name. (Richard Lintern, and they were Daniel in House of Eliott, aka the least bad of Evangeline Eliott's terrible no-good love interests.)

But that led to me discovering the existence of Jupiter Moon, and I was deeply amused and bemused. You probably need to be a UK person of a certain vintage to appreciate just how unlikely every single sentence of that wiki entry is, but it's like an April Fool's entry, except it's totally real. BSB, in its short-lived existance did somehow make 150 episodes of a thrice-weekly soap opera featuring a university IN SPACE in 1990, as created by some guy who usually wrote The Archers. There is pretty much no sentence in the wiki page that's not making me boggle or laugh, or both. It has Anna Chancellor in it, and seems to be what Lucy Benjamin was doing between s1 and 4 of Press Gang.

I had to go look on YT and found the whole thing here so I watched some while I was a bit brainless the last few days. It is exactly what you would expect from the description. (Fake looking video-bound soap opera stuff with variable young actors, love drama, and can Timmy give up chocolate, oh and SWIRLY THINGS IN SPACE.)

3. I found another B7 reactor I occasionally look at when I'm tired etc, and recently watched their reaction to "Weapon" and had to link here, because their reaction when Servalan turns up in that costume was great. XD

I hope to be more sensible around here soon, you never know. It could happen. ♥

Another icon batch! A lot of the first sets here were duplicates/ones I decided not to use for my [community profile] 100fandomicons table, then a random [community profile] iconcolors set, some text sets I started & haven't finished, and finally a bunch for [community profile] perioddrama_ic (for the dark lighting challenge, which is why they look like that) and [community profile] retro_icontest (for the nostalgia theme).

... to the bunch of my flisters I like to call the Gauda Prime Gang, especially since most of them know exactly what I mean, and clearly go in for ironic birth dates. But, no, really - best wishes and a happy day to [personal profile] meneleth, [personal profile] aralias, [personal profile] rosied, [personal profile] jaxomsride2 and to [personal profile] whuffle! May your day be entirely unlike the anniversary we're commemorating. ♥

And with that, also fellow commiserations to all us Blake's 7 fans, for Gauda Prime Day is upon us once more. What could possibly go wrong now, indeed? (Thanks, [personal profile] sallymn, for all the most perfect icons!)

(And, as ever, if you don't know what I'm talking about and you have any interest in SFF and any toleration for old time Brit TV, you should find out, especially now that it's actually available via BritBox! You can thank me next year. In short: watch B7. It's old, it's super-influential, it's shaky, it's still much much too relevant, it's the snarkiest, and it's very awesome and somehow great fun and terribly bleak all at the same time.)
thisbluespirit: mary-lou in a blanket (malory towers)
Icons I've made since I last posted a batch here. I don't think I've posted any of these here before, but some of them were made or posted elsewhere two years or more ago - this was a post I made to catch up on my delayed icon posting in April 2021 and then just... left. I'm pretty sure I have a few other odd ones in addition to the [community profile] 100fandomicons ones I've made since (few, but some), but I think I ought to get on and post this one!

Mostly made for challenges for [community profile] iconcolors, [community profile] icontalking and [community profile] iconthat but some just for fun, like the Malory Towers ones.
Fandoms - Malory Towers, Good Omens, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, OUaT, Doctor Who, Blake's 7 & Red Dwarf. (the Red Dwarf ones were made for another TV Tropes round, so I think this post got delayed because I wanted to find the trope template for that ETA: here.)

(Whyyyy am I so bad lately at making icons, posting the ones I do make, and reposting the lost ones??? idk. Will try to do better.)

I was already being overtired and blah blah blah summer, you all know the drill by now, and then as we also all know it was so hot things were on fire, and that was even less fun, but at least that has stopped for now and it is like normal outside even if inside is only more slowly winding itself down from the peak.

Anyway, in the meantime, here are some good things (for me, anyway):

* I woke up this morning to find someone I don't know at all ([tumblr.com profile] poweredbuttercup10) has made fanart of my story Red Skies, which I wrote ages ago for [personal profile] calliopes_pen, a little John/Jonathan/Mina Dracula 1968 fic, where the Harkers vamp one fainty doctor. Anyway, I did old-school squeeing, because look: https://thisbluespirit.tumblr.com/post/690462693065474048/based-on-thisbluespirit-s-ao3-work-red-skies

Amazing. <3 (I am laughing at myself a bit though: such a cute little murder scene!!! omg, darlings. <3)

* also i made another element moodboard (about a week or two ago? idk, it now seems like a lifetime or something) for Manganese: https://thisbluespirit.tumblr.com/post/689391684465967104/original-other-elements-28-manganese-he-opens

(I chose Manganese for [personal profile] theseatheseatheopensea's gift fic: The Sky Outside)

* Marie-Clare has now reacted to Blake's 7 ep2 now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fynx_-yEnCE (Go quickly, because the BBC will probably take it down soon. I won't link every week, sorry, but it was another great reaction, so XD.)

* also [personal profile] lurking_latinist happened to write Like Sunshine Through Rain, making Six/Charley fic just that tiny bit less rare (also it was excellent, yes). <3

Plus, [personal profile] bunn7cula is promising to send me a thing!

And I do at least have a draft of the Just Married fic, but also maybe defaulting would be easier than editing in summer? idk. It is a thing that will definitely be a thing now. Hopefully on time, but eventually, even if I have to wait for a better season, and I am totally being in love with this combination of characters all over again, but I can't talk about that for a month.
thisbluespirit: (blake's 7)
I'm sorry, I keep just popping up with a random link, but bear with me, summer is being summer, I'm not great, my neighbours are being noisy at times, which isn't helping at all, and the rest of the time I'm trying to get the Just Married fic done.

But Marie-Clare, whose Classic Who reactions I've been following for ages (she has been almost entirely unspoiled for all of it), has now started on Blake's 7! If anyone else would like to see that, she's just posted the first episode's reaction here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ6QfhAUO_M (Spoiler: she liked it! I had to laugh, because her reaction this was pretty much mine about 12 years ago when I tried it, heh.)

(She's posting them once a week, so we will all have to wait till next Friday or whenever it happens, to find out what she makes of meeting certain characters... XD And... no spoilers!)

... to [personal profile] aralias, [personal profile] meneleth, [personal profile] whuffle, [personal profile] rosied, & [personal profile] jaxomsride2 who all share this very special day!

And also of course a very unhappy fortieth Gauda Prime Day to everyone who knows what that means! (I remain as amused as ever that so many of the people above do know - so happy birthday/commiserations! Celebrate as appropriately as you may! Possibly... XD)

I hadn't realised it was 40 years till yesterday! Anyway, in lieu of something more, I've been repointing people to my Why Classic Who Fans Should Watch Blake's 7 post and [personal profile] aralias's similar but different why you should watch blake's 7, f-list.

It is old and creaky TV now, but for anyone for whom that is not a barrier who can get hold of it, it is hands down one of the best TV rides I've ever had, with some of the best characters, and I recommend checking it out. For a short-lived BBC SF show (4x13 50min eps), it's had a very long impact and almost all the current crop of TV SF are in some way its grandchildren - its children being Babylon 5, Farscape and Firefly, who all took important aspects from it. (JMS drops in the odd Avon quote in homage, just to prove it.)

(It also has Ben Steed, but we can talk about that when & if anyone gets to S3.)

Anyway, it is genuinely awesome. I know this is sad and weird of me, but when I reached the end after other Classic Who fans bullied me into giving it a go about 12 or so years ago, I just stood up and clapped. And then was v relieved there was no one else around. But... yes. It was one hell of a ride, and they'd all been right, and I loved it.

Go to the following website https://www.random.org/lists/ and type in 15 different characters from any Fandom (they can be in the same fandom). Then it will give you an order, after shuffling the characters. You must answer the following in the order they give you!

Fandoms: Dracula (1968), OUaT, Sapphire & Steel, Blake’s 7, Doctor Who, Press Gang, Adam Adamant Lives!, Spooks, The Shadow of the Tower.

I'm very tired (again) but I should mention [community profile] fandomtrees, which went live all of 3 days ago. Under mine, I found:

* 3 Janeway icons from [personal profile] kingstoken

* [personal profile] liadt gave me some actual non-blurry pics of James Maxwell in the burninated Nigel Kneale TV play The Road here and also lovely fanart for the coffee shop bit of the AU Meme for Silver (& Liz Shaw).

* A lovely selection box of Blake's 7 icons from [personal profile] zephron1, so I need to decide which one(s) to use. I think I must find space for the Vila & Servalan one at the very least!

* and last but by no means least, [personal profile] hamsterwoman made me some great B7 quote icons in revenge repayment for me being the cause of them watching it earlier this year.

So, it was good fun. I did not manage to do much, but I did make [personal profile] zephron1 some Gan & Vila icons and recced some happy vids for, er, someone else. (I'm sorry, it was three days ago and I was randomly looking through the recs tag at the last minute for someone I could make a rec list for. I would know the entry again if I saw it!)

So, I continue to feel rotten, even though the weather is giving me a break but hey. ANYWAY, to turn to something more cheerful than weather, illness, and certainly than current news, [personal profile] liadt is running the [community profile] unconventionalcourtship fest again this summer! Sign-ups open now!

[community profile] unconventionalcourtship is the ficathon where you take a Mills & Book/Harlequin/Avon type book blurb and then kill it with fanfic use it as inspiration for a fic, as shippy or not, or cracky or serious or not as you please.

It's an old school fest, so you just choose a prompt and sign up for a posting day some time in August and there you are. \o/

Anyway, I doubt I can do it (see above), but in addition to pointing you to it, I have generated some random summaries from the Unconventional Courtship Generator in case anyone is short of ideas. I'm sure these would make great crack fic. XD (On more sensible note, you can also customise it for your own fandoms, too, if you want help with inspiration.)
