b7 comm has lift-off (and crashes, obv.)
Mar. 23rd, 2012 05:41 pmWell, no one told me not to do the comm, so
b7love_250 is live! Feel free to join, add prompts to the prompt post or even write a ficlet. (And older fic that would fit an unclaimed pairing - and as yet, they're all unclaimed - is okay, although obviously the idea is to generate some new ficlets for the fandom, too.)
I made two banners so I can go pimp it places over the weekend, hopefully. Feel free to also pimp, because clearly I need all the help I can get...

As you can see, the crew look suitably unimpressed by the whole thing. And, anyway, while this is no doubt appropriately doomed to failure, maybe it's possible there will also be some snark and fun along the way, also appropriately.
(
vilakins, when you let me leave
b7friday prompts, I think it went to my head. One tiny taste of power in the fandom and... Whoops.)
Also if there are any glaring errors in the profile anywhere, I would v much like to know before pimpage than after. I think not, but...

Date: 2012-03-23 10:05 pm (UTC)The biggest problem with it, though, is that for some reason they still haven't released the DVDs in the US (no idea; probably the Terry Nation Estate and copyright again, or something), so you need to either have some means of playing non-region 1 DVDs, or other inventive skills. Otherwise, this is a totally hypothetical issue anyway.
For Classic Who fans, it's full of familiar names - Terry Nation wrote the entire first season, or drafted it, with Chris Boucher filling in the gaps as script editor, and there are about 4 Rob Holmes episodes, and the first 3 seasons were produced by David Maloney. It's kind of unrelentingly downbeat (and the first handful of episodes really are slow, although it does pick up a lot once Servalan appears) but it's also hugely snarky and entertaining. The best way I can think of describing it is as an epic Shakespearean tragedy in Space. With New Romantic costumes, and a lot of polystyrene/plastic, courtesy of 1970s BBC. And snark.
And don't Google it. Don't look for anything about it. There are spoilers everywhere! (You probably know that already, though, because the most famous thing about B7 is the ending.)
I love it, but I can see it's also the sort of thing people could hate with a passion as well. The characters are all very interesting, though, including the computers, and few things in it are ever black and white.
I always find it really hard to say whether people would like Blake's 7, more so than other things. If you can get hold of it without too much trouble, it's fun just from the point of view of being a DW fan, anyway. ('Spot the reused prop' is always entertaining, as is ticking off all the Terry Nation cliches in S1, and hello again, John Leeson...!)

Date: 2012-03-23 10:32 pm (UTC)As for the spoilers, a friend unknowingly spoiled me years ago--she had no idea I hadn't seen it. (Or was that Blackadder Goes Forth? Hmm. Now I don't know, so perhaps there's still an element of surprise!) It's a wonder she's still alive...

Date: 2012-03-24 12:03 am (UTC)This reminds me that I should finish my big damn table of 100 fics I was doing for Vila. There are only 9 or so to go, but they're topics that don't inspire me.
You should pimp this on

Date: 2012-03-24 08:30 am (UTC)And I went to YT find the theme for you, and came back with episode 1 - although as I said, the first few episodes have a slower feel than later on, and S2-4 are pretty snappy in comparison. (The main characters get introduced slowly, so some of them aren't in this, including a very important one - but if you don't know who the crew is, then I'll say no more, because it's clear that who would end up as being 'the seven' was part of the point of the first few eps - indeed, the whole of S1, really.)
B7 - The Way Back (The internet is a wonderful thing!)
Aha. hahaha. I shall say nothing further, then. Besides, the show still has some other surprises up it's sleeve...

Date: 2012-03-24 05:01 pm (UTC)Thank you - I was going to put it on
Heh. (Sorry, I have a vision of your masterpost being titled that now - My Big Damn Table of 100 Vila Fics. Do you have a masterlist for it, btw? *curious*) Anyway, your problem is solved. Throw a random character to pair Vila for each of those final 9 awkward prompts, and kill two birds with one stone. ;-)

Date: 2012-03-24 09:34 pm (UTC)My master post is in fact called just that! It's here (http://vilakins.livejournal.com/145646.html). It looks like there are only eight prompt left. Admittedly three of those are author's choice but I've held off picking those till I filled the hard ones.

Date: 2012-03-25 02:59 am (UTC)Best of luck with the comm! I shall be a bewildered supporter wandering around with vaguely undirected good cheer.

Date: 2012-03-25 12:20 pm (UTC)See, they are just waiting for random pairings... Heh.
Actually, OT, was it you who was saying to me that Farscape was good, or at least that I should like Aeryn Sun? Because the other day I went to add it to my Amazon wishlist, and discovered S1 up for 1p (well, £1.27 with p&p, but even so...!) So I have it! (I mean, maybe a disc will turn out to be dodgy, but I can live with that for 1p. And it certainly all looks fine.)

Date: 2012-03-25 12:22 pm (UTC)Just ware spoilers - B7 spoilers are dangerous; they hang out in unexpected places and bite passers-by. ;-)

Date: 2012-03-25 09:52 pm (UTC)As someone else pointed out, it stars escaped prisoners on a captured ship; sound familiar? :-)

Date: 2012-03-26 04:09 pm (UTC)Anyway, I have it & I'll be sure to let you know what you think. It's no good warning against duff eps (although I appreciate it) you just have to watch them the first time to see if they really are that duff, or if you're going to be the awkward fan that actually loves the unloved ep. (Or is that just me?)

Can't think what you mean... ;-)
