thisbluespirit: (Northanger reading)
I feel as if I've hardly read anything yet, but I think that's in part because I read a couple of longer stories, which cut down the totals for that brief window where it works out. But that promises a lot of fun catching up to do over the next few weeks (provided the planets and stars align etc. etc.).

In the meantime, including my (3!) gifts, here are my first gleanings:

18 x recs in 'Allo 'Allo, Archer's Goon, Cadfael, Canterbury Tales, Daughters of Mannerling, Georgette Heyer, Northanger Abbey, & Sapphire & Steel )

I Googled "Allo Allo" (for reasons of spelling something or other) and got this result at the top of the page, all unexpectedly:

Allo Allo actor Sam Kelly dies aged 70

:-(

I loved him most as Sam in On The Up, but for my sister and me, watching Allo Allo when we were little, Hans was always our favourite.

The next round of daft snippets from the housework meme. As last time, only the tiniest bit of actual shippiness in the Allo Allo one.

Icons I've made but somehow never posted over this past year. Maybe some were even longer ago? Anyway, FINALLY...

So there's not much going on, and I couldn't resist retrying the meme using last names. Some couples stayed together despite the odds: Evie Eliott & Eowyn, Frobisher & Gandalf, Maddy & Maid Marian, and Servalan & Seven. The results were mostly much scarier than last time, but it did throw up some things that were amusing - and one or two I want badly now:

Meme found in the wild: Make a list of all the characters in your icons. (Although you may have more than one icon of a single character, they only go on the list once.) Alphabetize it. Take the first two people on the list; that's your first pairing. Second two people; second pairing, etc. Treat us to some commentary once you're done.

I thought it'd be fun... I hadn't quite realised what a weird jumble of characters I have - some of them are there more for the action in the icon than the character. So, in most cases, let's say that instead of a commentary, a horrified silence might be more appropriate?

(Actually, it turned out better than I expected. For the first half of the alphabet, anyway.)

38 random pairings and an odd man out )

Excuse the spammage tonight, but I have decided that over the next few days, I will post all the uploaded but unposted icons I have. Some of them are now very old (but obviously I deleted anything I really didn't like). I kept thinking I would do more of each, but even if I do, they'll look different now, and it's getting silly.

This post contains all the non-text, non-DW ones. The text and DW will follow in due course.

Allo Allo [1 - 11]
Carry On Films [12 - 92]
I Capture the Castle, Inkheart, Inspector Alleyn [93 - 121]
Julia Sawalha - WDYTYA [122 - 132]

Dear flist, do not faint, but a non-icon related post about Doctor Who! Current Doctor Who! Minorly spoilery!

I have been meaning to type up some interesting things/snippets from old DWMs (as typing up practise and general altruism and stuff), as I have them going back to the 1990s. I did not intend to start with the current issue. However, it arrived yesterday and made me laugh twice on a brief glance through, so I thought I would share three things.

(Also, I still have only watched The Impossible Astronaut, so if you want to be more spoilery, please kidnap these quotes and take them back to your own LJ, thank you. Sorry, but I am working hard on being an ostrich.)

First, Steven Moffat quote on the story-arc this season, that I thought some people might find of interest/reassuring. (DWM is generally a reliable from-the-horse's-mouth source):

"That's what you should do with a first episode - funny, accessible sci-fi. The Impossible Astronaut was a departure from the norm, and that's good, that makes it exciting, but that's never going to be the paradigm. Never, ever. The fact that we're making people wait weeks for the story to play out is exciting to do once, but not every year."

And, under the cut: minor spoiler (the quote DWM have chosen as a teaser from Let's Kill Hitler), something else amusing, and a thought I had on the upcoming episode.

Snippety-snippets )

More DW excitement to come in between icons! (Well, maybe exciting is over-selling it, but I have found some interesting things.)

I began a little scattily on the 30 Days of Awesome Females meme, and despite the subject of this entry, will tidy myself up now. This list excludes DW (for the sake of not taking up all 30 places) and will include more than one character I wanted to grow up to be (of whom this character is one. Erm. Yes.), at least two I never even thought I'd like when they first appeared and a few so obvious they could almost go without saying (but where would be the fun in that?)

It is Michelle of the Resistance. She will say this only once... )

This meme will resume with somebody more sensible shortly.

Still catching up:

Day 08 - A show everyone should watch:

Given how different everyone is, can there be such a thing? However, a show I think everyone should at least try Episode 1 of is Life on Mars. I'd call it the show of the decade without question save that it probably needed Spooks and Doctor Who paving the way for it, but still... for the UK, anyway.

It's different, strange as any TV show has ever been, scary, killingly funny and the cast are great, especially Philip Glenister. (The US remake has already proved the impossibility of recasting Gene Hunt.) (And it has this Camberwick Green moment, which is possibly one of my favourite things I've ever seen on TV ever.) I perfectly understand people finding it too peculiar, too British, too regional, but worth a shot. Yes.

Day 09 - Best scene ever:

What, just the one? I could do top twenty DW scenes and still kick myself for missing things, but off the top of my head, here are some, from different shows (& I couldn't find YouTube clips of any of them, and darn it, there used to be for The gateau from the Chateau!)

Great scenes under the cut )

For [livejournal.com profile] jjpor in the crossover meme, although I did try not to write it: Four, Sarah and Harry meet Lieutenant Gruber in a distressing incident involving his little tank.

Gruber, for those who don't know Allo Allo was played by Guy Siner, also General Ravon in Genesis of the Daleks. (Fellow Allo Allo star Hilary Minster is also in it as a Thal. It really does distract from that serial when you know the sitcom). Allo Allo is a 1980s/90s British sitcom set in occupied France.

The Ingenuity of Edith Artois (or The Nicked Knockwursts Get Nicked Again)

I got the story written (for Kanna-Ophelia in NYR) at last.  See here: http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/86/theingenuity.html

Summary: Michelle's plan has gone wrong (again) and it's up to Edith to save the day.  This would be so much easier if everyone else would get out of the way...

Writing Allo Allo is hard to do.... Give David Croft a medal. )

I snagged this meme off [livejournal.com profile] primsong.

When you see this, post a brief snippet of all your fannish works-in-progress.

I'm not normally too bad, save a few long-hand snippets lying around under the bed, but I seem to have a few half-typed at the moment. So, here goes:
