Beyond the Roundels

I had a blood test last week (just the regular annual one), so most of the week was taken up with recovering from going out for that, although I did quite well in that respect.

So, last night Remix Revival went live, and I got this unexpectedly fabulous remix of a rather silly and punny Seven & Ace drabble I did for dw100 many many moons ago. It's delightful and if you enjoy a bit of Seven 'n' Ace, you should definitely go read it.

Also: totally contains a version of Monopoly that should become a proper official thing. XD

remixrevival has had its author reveal and now I can own up that I wrote this for ruuger, which I'm sure will surprise no one who knows me.

I got ruuger as my assignment and was keen to remix some of their Twelfth Doctor fic and then re-read Old, New, Borrowed, Blue (in which Thirteen, while dressed as Marilyn Monroe at a party, accidentally marries Eleven) and approximately an hour later, a rough draft of this was in my notebook, because how could I possibly resist cracky accidental marriage fic involving the Doctor? And then summer defeated me and I had to default, being unable to type up so much as a word of it. Luckily, autumn has already been kinder and I got this done post-deadline. I also made reference to Hope is All We Have, which was at least a Twelfth Doctor story.

* remixrevival has opened for sign-ups! Remix is my one summer thing I do, as it usually works out, and I love Remix too much not to try. I'll wait till nearer the 20th to do it, though, just in case the weather is awkward, and see how I am. (There's such a fascination with trying to pull out something from the bones of someone else's fic to play with, and seeing someone else give your own fic that same attention and pull unexpected things out of it. Sort of terribly navel-gazey, I suppose, but great fun and there's usually some amazing fic.)

* There's a mid-year equivalent of the Snowflake Challenge going on - the sunshine_challenge, with a challenge every other day (starting yesterday).

* trope_bingo has opened for its latest round, too.

* Plus, tardis_library is having a reccing bingo.

The first fic I read when looking for what to remix was this one, and it was so obviously the one I was going to have to remix, I was almost affronted. Anyway, the original is a lovely/sad post-canon crossover about Orac and the TARDIS, with Orac sending files to the TARDIS, so I could switch it to the TARDIS's end and explore the files she receives. Plus, there's an old joke about elephants and trees.

It's a remix of paranoidangel's Tea and Biscuits, because we just can't avoid each other in these things! Anyway, it was fun and I had plenty of options to choose from, but my heart wanted this one. I'd actually beta-ed Tea and Biscuits (and it was a gift fic for dbskyler, too), which is a little odd, but so far in my remixing, I've always gone for stories I've loved and that's what drew me to T&B quite quickly. I'm not sure what the key is (I'm sure you could remix almost anything with a bit of work and inspiration), but certainly a story that speaks to me, one I can say something in response to is maybe what that sudden, "That's the one!" spark is. Anyway, this was fun. I was little worried about effectively switching Eleven for Twelve, because it borders on going too far - but on the other hand, the Doctor is the Doctor, and I know Paranoidangel doesn't have an aversion to any of them. (Well, as far as I know!)


And I see that I have estirose to thank for the remix of my Dungeons & Dragons fic! (Madness is still unrevealed, although I do have a suspicion...)

You can write remixes for it without signing up and you can sign up (offer your fic to be remixed) without writing anything. You can include previous remixes, collaborations, and WIPs and there are art options too, as many safe works as you want, and no eligibility besides "you have one fic in this fandom." So, go on over and offer your fic/art up for people to remix! Or have fun and remix something yourself.

Now I should go off and see about typing up my actual assignment before I go look, because, yay, Remix Madness! \o/

(I do enjoy Remix, sorry; you can probably tell. I suppose it's kind of like the ultimate fic-conversation you can have with someone, in some ways, and it's always pretty fun and fascinating. And you're not writing a gift for someone, so it's different than most exchanges.)

For a_phoenixdragon in the Fic Commentary Meme, who asked for a commentary on Unrelated (The Loop the Loop to Affinity Remix)

This was a Remix fic, so a lot of it is in reaction to the original fic, in this case scripsi's Sliding Down the Razorblades of Life and other parts of her River/Master series. Doing a Remix is always a slightly different process to other writing - you're responding to someone else's work, so my first move is to skim through my assigned remixee's work to see what jumps out at me. And then, I don't know, I read and read that until something comes. I hesitated over this because to remix something that was part of a series possibly made things a little more complicated than was wise.

1. I had a bad few days for various reasons, and, as ever, I tend to slip up on LJ when that happens. I'm caught up again, but apologies if I missed things. Today feels a little better at least! (Nothing terrible happened, but I went very low & technology failed on me at some points - if anyone knows of a good alternative to the VLC-player that isn't either madly fiddly & thus slow or also affected by this aspect ratio bug re. screencaps, I would be happy to hear about it. The only reason I have VLC Player is for screencapping. I do have another program that does it, but it's fiddly & stupid in many ways so I only use it when I'm forced. Also my little TV/DVD player broke yesterday, which is almost in the terrible category. I feel ridiculous that one person should need two TVs, but getting rid of the proper one downstairs would be silly & unhelpful and I can't quite get by yet without my little one to hand for the lowest days when downstairs is too much to handle. :-/)


2. Naturally, in the middle of this (well, prior to the TV-demise), I applied my usual solution of watching old TV with favourite actors and reached the episode of Hadleigh that starred James Maxwell. Hadleigh is not a show that goes in for villains, but they made an exception for James Maxwell. However, it was a nice role and nobody attached anything to his face whatsoever, so overall that was a win. I'll do a picspam and waffle more about that sometime. (Obviously I braved my annoying program to cap that one. But. Argh.) (I was meant to be watching the previous episode, but it was by the same person who kept writing about people wanting to impregnate everybody in Survivors and I promised myself that if he wrote one word about pregnancy, I was skipping to James Maxwell. I thought that was a joke, but the episode was about someone thinking she was pregnant. Dear God, all these 70s writers with weird obsessions that people keep letting them write...! /o\ I skipped to James Maxwell and was very happy to do so. Even if he was villainous.)


3. Anyway, nice things! Remix Redux went live this morning last night* & I had the lovely surprise of discovering that someone had remixed my Spooks ficlet where Ruth and Harry live happily ever after running a bookshop in Devon. So now there is more Ruth/Harry/Bookshop/can't stop being spies ever fic in the world & I rec it heartily to anyone who knows Spooks:

I took part in Remix Redux for the first time this year, so I woke up this morning to find a lovely remix of (unexpectedly) the one Once Upon a Time drabble I'd written (some lovely perilous thing a gift for ramasi in fandom_stocking).

Anyway, it's really lovely and takes a drabble I wouldn't have said had anything more in it, and expands beautifully on the original point. It's great (and not spoilery beyond Belle's first episode in S1):
