25. What’s your most popular fanfic?

The Spirit of St Mary Mead, which I wrote for Wasuremo in Yuletide 2016, and is about Miss Marple as a sort of genius loci. (223 kudos, 75 comments and 37 bookmarks. I mean, I know that's peanuts by mega-ship/fandom standards but it leaves most of my other works miles behind in the dust.)

... followed closely by So We Meet at Last, a crossover ficlet in which Miss Marple dusts Dracula. (170 kudos, 40 comments, 32 bookmarks.) (Amused as I am by James Maxwell's epic fainty-ness, the first thing I noticed about the 1968 TV Dracula was that it had Joan Hickson in as Mrs Weston and people patronised her and it was awful. Clearly there was only one possible response, hence the ficlet, which I scribbled in about 30 mins for [community profile] fan_flashworks.)

#4 is also a Miss Marple crossover ficlet. For reasons I have no explanation for, weird Miss Marple fic is apparently what the universe wants from me. I am really not sure how I feel about this, although it could certainly be worse.

26. How do you come up with your fanfic titles?

Either straight away, as if by magic, or else by sheer desperation, rifling any appropriate poetry, songs, quotes etc. etc. And for meme ficlets, yes, one word titles. I don't care. Although when I get my kudos emails from AO3, I do have no clue which ones they all are.

27. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?

It depends! Both can just arrive with the story, although I suppose titles are harder, as with summaries you can often get away with quoting a line or two of the fic at least.

28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

I don't know, meme, I don't actually have the second sight. Do they mean which story would I want it to be? In which case, the answer is any of them and anything. I would be thrilled. It happened to me once, with one of my S&S ficlets, and it was lovely and then the fanartist just deleted it, which was very saddening.

From [community profile] thefridayfive:

1. What book frightened you as a young person?
I don't know. I can think of TV things that did, and books I didn't like, or that left an unpleasant taste behind, one way or another, but I don't remember being terrified of anything in a book. I was always on the wimpish side in my reading, just in case something would scare me.

ETA: If it counts, when I was 11, our class tutor read us a Sweeney Todd story, and that definitely scared me!

2. If you had to become a ‘living book (i.e. able to recite the contents of a book cover to cover upon request – reference Fahrenheit 451), what book would it be?
I would prefer not to become a living book, as that sounds very uncomfortable for me and everyone else around me, so I'll go for Love That Dog because it's about the shortest book I know. (It's also good, though, and contains bonus poetry.)

3. What movie or TV show scared you as a kid?
The BBC Miss Marple (Nemesis in particular), and I do mean Joan Hickson. She sprayed somebody in the face with insecticide. Also some random thing where a cake was poisoned that I saw when I was four, that I think was some old b&w film comedy and was the worst/scariest thing ever. Also when I was about four, I was scared of the theme music to Doctor Who and when it came on would stick my head under a cushion and yell for someone to turn it off. So, ironically, I put an end to DW-watching in my house for about six or seven years, until I got into it myself. (It only ever scared me in the good way after that.) Also probably, as it turns out, Assignment Six of S&S, and that episode of Bergerac where Alfred Burke was so good he had to murder people. And Fraggles! Fraggle Rock was pure nightmare fuel. I still shudder if I see or hear of a Fraggle. The weasels in the (stop-motion) Wind in the Willows! TV was full of terrifying things when I was small.

4. What movie (scary or otherwise) will you never ever watch?
I am very wimpish about horror! It would be quicker to give a list of things I would watch, although that would still be far too long for a meme. But nothing that's primarily a gore-fest, anyway, unless I had to for some reason. I've been learning lately to be a little less wimpish in my watching, although only a little so far, and it's paid off.

5. Do you have any phobias?
Nothing at the level of a phobia, but I am scared of the future, fish, and over-eating (and poisoned cake, see above). And shop-window dummies.

And so my treats. I wrote the first for [personal profile] calliopes_pen, chiefly in a hopeless attempt to remain anonymous, so that she might at least wonder which one was me. Then there were two prompts in particular that jumped out at me this year, the first being Wasuremono's great prompt about Miss Marple being a goddess, the genius loci of St Mary Mead, which I obviously had to write:

The second was for moemachina, about Feste & Olivia from Twelfth Night. As I've loved Feste since I did the play for A-Levels mumble years ago, I couldn't resist. I had an idea, but then remembered that writing Shakespeare fic is TERRIFYING. So I watched BBC TN twice in a row, found some 16th C jokes and riddles on the internet, built my fic around those and then went for it. And then typed it up while mentally going LALALA not writing Shakespeare etc. Happily, it seems to have got some really lovely comments, so I clearly didn't mess it up too badly.

That done, I decided to write a couple of treats for Madness if I could, but the Adam Adamant Lives! fic for Liadt grew large enough for the main collection, even if it was probably too frivolous for Yuletide (and I don't think Liadt was fooled by my anonymity for a minute, either):

1. Two more [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales installments:

The More Things Change... (PG, 1198 words. Charles Terrell, Anna Miller, Edward Woodfield. For some people, it seems the rebellion isn’t over.

2. I was poking around at some very old fic the other day, including some efforts from This Time Round (the pub outside reality where Doctor Who characters go in between stories, courtesy of alt.drwho.creative on usenet), and while most of my TTR fics don't really transfer so well out of the Round, I found this Harry and Sarah do a classic Agatha Christie fic and though, despite being rather meta-ish at the edges, it's comprehensible as an AU and hopefully fairly entertaining & so I've been tweaking it and uploading it to AO3.

(Some of the characters are aware of the narrative they're in though, and there's some playing around with that. I seem to recall the original idea was that there were things called 'genre bubbles' that could occur around Nameless, and the characters in the vicinity would all start acting in accordance to narrative rules of that genre. Hence Harry and Sarah in a Miss Marple story.) I seem to have written it some time during or soon after S4 of New Who.

I'll attempt to find some brain not occupied by Public Eye, and tell you about how lucky I was for Yuletide (again).

I had a marvellous gift fic in the main collection, from someone who dealt with my incoherent Chalet School request and wrote me a wonderful fic (involving Hijinks & Shenanigans no less) that took so many parts of it and used them to great effect. And Mary-Lou faces down a ghost - and tells it (not unkindly) that it needs to buck up its ideas and stop feeling sorry for itself. Anyway, it's great, and I love it. If you also like Chalet School stories, I'm sure you'd enjoy it too:

I was also lucky enough to have three treats in the Yuletide Madness collection. Two of them were for the Ten Stupidest Things I've Heard Since Richard III's Remains blog post - which has taken off and had some marvellous and hilarious fic written for it. Dear flist, it's a thing! We made it a thing! (Especially [personal profile] akashasheiress who linked me to it and [personal profile] justice_turtle who did the important bit of actually nominating it, of course!) They are both excellent, one a great drabble, one a short, brilliantly biting satirical ficlet. I'll try to do a recs post, but you should definitely check out the rest of the fic for it!

The King of Tallstoria (429 words) and Delayed Interment (100 words).

Also, also - somebody wrote me Inspector Neele and Mary Dove from the Miss Marple story A Pocketful of Rye!

One Good Turn (966 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Miss Marple - Agatha Christie
Rating: General Audiences

Summary: They are getting some practice in saving each other. They just aren't either of them sure what the practice is for.

It's exactly what I wanted when I read the book! *dances a bit* It's a delight and I'm thrilled to bits.

Also, happily, my recipient seemed to like my story, thankfully, and my two treats (one in the main collection), one in Madness also. (There are no points whatsoever for anyone guessing which Yuletide Madness fic I wrote. I have never in my life been less anonymous in a gift exchange, but it had to be done.)

I did manage to do some reading while home and there are some glorious things in the collection and in Madness - I'll see if I can manage a recs post before reveal. In the meantime, my brain apparently belongs to Frank Marker. He doesn't deserve it at all, but what can you do?

Nothing to see here, except my annual ridiculously epic Yuletide Letter:

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Firstly, thank you! You are ready to attempt to write something for me - and you share a tiny fandom with me. ♥

I am a great believer in the story that you want to tell being the one that's going to be the most compelling to read, so please, write that. In fact, for several of these requests, what I want most of all is just to see what you would write in these worlds. So, if you are the sort of person who likes a concise letter and a free hand, please, just go for what you have in mind. All the extra details are for souls like me who want them. Do not attempt to give me everything below in one fic; you'd do yourself an injury. If anything seems contradictory, it's mostly because I like all sorts of different things at different times in different fandoms. So, if you've got that burning idea, go write it. I'm sure I will love it.

Because I do want to start trying to make posts that are talking again. (My last week's ones don't count; that was incoherent babbling. ;-D)

1. A much-delayed link/announcement but [livejournal.com profile] liadtbunny has started up [livejournal.com profile] oldbrit_tvicons - because it's so hard to find a sensible central place to post old British TV icons. However, the problem with that, is there's also no central place to advertise a comm to post old British TV icons. So, do go & join if that's of interest, and if not, if you can pass the word along, that'd be wonderful.

2. At last I can talk about this! [personal profile] seriesfive sent me her WIP by installments, one of the things that has been cheering me up this year, but obviously you can't rec a WIP. But now it's in progress on AO3, so I can. It's a fic in which Silver and Steel get stuck in the His Dark Materials universe and very strange things are happening, including to them. There are many things I could say about it, because it's excellent, but mainly... Silver is stuck as a lemur and it is awesome. (I didn't know I needed lemur-fic in my life, but apparently I did.) That is a terrible rec (sorry, [personal profile] seriesfive!) - it also has a mystery and much amusing and subtle character stuff between the two, which is what people should read it for, but Silver is a lemur. That is all. *cough*

Of Angels and Elementals (30011 words) by SeriesFive
Chapters: 14/29
Fandom: Sapphire and Steel, His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Daemons, Alternate Universe - Fusion, Idfic, Community: Fic Rush, Trope Bingo Round 2, Gen or Pre-Slash, Daemons, Angels, Elements
Summary:

Steel and Silver have been assigned. Their destination: Oxford. Upon their arrival they soon discover that they’ve stumbled into a trap — a trap specifically designed to capture an elemental. The question is what is more perilous? Steel realising that he is slowly turning human, Silver discovering that he’s somehow ended up as Steel’s dæmon or the fact that a dark shadow is transforming innocent school-boys into statues?

This is obviously pre-HDM. In Lord Asriel’s world elements are called elementals. The story can be read as Gen or Pre-Slash, just choose according to your preferences.

3. Also, I have discovered the secret of fanfic writing success! Well, obviously apart from writing in popular fandoms, popular slash pairings, and/or being very good. But if, like me, you're not any of those things, what you do is this: write a hasty crossover ficlet in which Miss Marple is in someone else's fandom, being awesome. Then sit back and wait for the kudos to inexplicably roll in.

More seriously, something very nice happened during Non-Existent-and-Horrible-July, which was that someone asked to translate my ficlet So We Meet At Last (in which Miss Marple meets Dracula and it doesn't end well for the Count) into Russian. This was very exciting - I don't think anyone's ever asked me if they can do anything to any of my fics, and certainly not to translate one. I can't give you the link, because it was for a specific challenge on a Russian site, but the translator gave me a guest login, so I had the fun of seeing my fic in Russian (and putting all the comments into Google translate) and, as there was a link back to my original fic, I suddenly got about 20 extra kudos on it. Which means that my top two fics are now both Miss Marple crossover ficlets. Hence my joke. But wasn't that lovely?
thisbluespirit: (Northanger reading)
As [livejournal.com profile] fan_flashworks were having another amnesty, I thought, in the absence of much brain, I'd try doing some graphics for it. Of course, the graphics turned out to be unusable and instead I accidentally wrote two ficlets, one another 100 Elements prompt ficlet, and the other a rather random Miss Marple meets Dracula crossover ficlet.

1. [livejournal.com profile] violetcreme made lovely cover art for my House of Eliott Bea/Jack ficlet, which I don't think anyone's done before!

2. A very entertaining post I found in my meanderings about why Miss Marple is awesome. (Because obviously, she is. I just watched an old ITV Dracula in which Van Helsing was patronising to Joan Hickson as a fluttery old lady. It was awful and wrong.)

3. A Ficathon Walked Into A Bar has returned from the dead! Sign-ups can be found at [community profile] intoabar or [livejournal.com profile] intoabar. I've been wanting to do it ever since I found out about it, but it was deceased by that time. And since the rules are pretty much "random crossover meeting in 500 words or more" I think even I can cope, since that's the kind of thing I write anyway.

further waffling )

4. ... and so then I wrote a Miss Marple meets Dracula ficlet for [livejournal.com profile] fan_flashworks in revenge for the 1960s TV. Just to prove the point.

5. Anyway, it's open, and it should be fun. And just looking at the LJ version brought up a Chalet School fic I didn't know existed! I'm having a sort of craving for new Chalet School fic, which is because I am really bad still at reading anything offline that isn't a CS book, but I've read the whole lot (very slowly) twice in two years now and I can't do it again. I hope. Also because I'm miffed that lots of the fill-in books cost £80 on Amazon, which would be the ideal solution. *sigh* (What if I went to [livejournal.com profile] freudesheim and said "Let's have a ficathon!"? Do you think there is anybody left there? *sigh again*)

6. Also, thanks, LJ, I suddenly seem to have 6 extra loyalty icons appear in the last few days for reasons beyond my understanding, so now I need to re-upload my CS and HoE icons. I have already instantly used it to have at least one more [livejournal.com profile] sallymn masterpiece and G'Kar. (I don't know how fannish I will be about Babylon 5 yet, though I enjoyed it v much, but obviously my life would be incomplete without a G'Kar icon.) (I'm pretty sure I'm not imagining things! I know I had only one icon space left and was deliberating over what to use it for and whether to delete other things and then suddenly I had 7 spaces left. Or maybe this is an alternate universe with only very slight changes...)

7. I am reasonably sure I had something else to say, possibly something more sensible. Oh, yes. I am, for the time being, feeling a bit better again, at last. :-)

[community profile] fandom_stocking went live yesterday, and I had so many nice things in my stocking! Thanks so much to everyone who left anything there for me. ♥ Anyone liking the sound of any of the following should go check it out. (Yes, I am displaying the contents of my stocking for you all...)

* I got TWO sets of David Collings gifs. Yes, really! \o/ I did ask, but I didn't think anyone would actually make me any. (I'll see about putting one or maybe two on the LJ version of this post, but I'm feeling a bit too lazy for Photobucket just now). They were made v kindly for me by [personal profile] brooms and [personal profile] liadt. ♥ ♥ ♥

* A tiny-but-cute Lorne & Fred ficlet (Ats) from [personal profile] yhlee

* A Mary Dove/Inspector Neele drabble from [personal profile] john_amend_all (Miss Marple, A Pocketful of Rye, and, um, yes, it's my fault. It's all to do with me wanting professional thief/detective and ITV casting Matthew Macfadyen and then sticking meticulously to the book, when the BBC 1980s version got the shippy vibe. Damn TV makers are so contrary.)

* [personal profile] kaffy_r wrote me a wonderful Sapphire and Steel fic Green, Red and Gold, and Blue Follows

* [profile] ladymercury10 left me a very tempting-looking set of Doctor who recs

* [personal profile] cosmic_llin wrote me a lovely Sarah & Harry ficlet. (Sometimes Harry is much more practical than the Doctor, after all.)

* A beautiful little set of Blake's 7 icons from [personal profile] usuallyhats

* An IOU for West Wing fic from [personal profile] feathermoon_scarletsky

* [personal profile] dbskyler gave me some vid links, and you should check them out but especially the adorable penguin one.

* Summer Afternoon Blues by [personal profile] glinda, another AtS ficlet, this one about Lorne and the first time he heard music and it's just gorgeous and if anyone round here also knows Angel, do take a look.

* Seven-and-Ace fic by [personal profile] clocketpatch, which is every bit as wonderful as you would suppose and I'm delighted.

* And last (but absolutely not least, since it contained infinity) - Unccountable Infinities from [personal profile] eve11 and Eight and Charley ficlet, which answered my first first Straybunnies prompt for the two of them investigating something really surreal. And Eight and Charley! *joy*

*plus various good wishes and season greetings from kind folks. Oh! And intriguingly, a promise for some David Collings graphics at some point this week from [personal profile] weaselett.

So that was pretty amazing and thanks again to everyone. I did manage to write and make some bits and bobs for other people, too. I (rather belatedly yesterday evening, sorry about that) put them in the AO3 collection as well, so I'll put up another post with the fics in sometime soon. (There were also a few graphics/icons and recs, but they were all pretty specific for the recipients.)

In which awesome, amusing and piratical shenanigans ensue )

In other news, I changed my layout (to match my default icon, heh). Me (having a habit of reading everyone else's flists when I'm bored) turning to read my flist: "What? Where am I? Whose the hell's flist is this one?" *rolls eyes*)
thisbluespirit: (S&S - Silver looks up)
(Um, yes. But hopefully it will be fairly amusing, anyway, even to people who aren't me.)

Just to show what I've been doing with my time this year, or something. You know me; this is not going to be entirely serious & I will endeavour not to be spoilery, even though this includes Blake. Plus, there will be a cute cat, I promise.

... And I don't know whether it makes it better or worse that the main part of this picspam only exists to justify the highly ridiculous mini-picspam at the end that I wound up with after making icons for [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo in August. Hmm...

Pics from Elizabeth R, Doctor Who, Midnight Is A Place, Sapphire & Steel, Blake's 7, Miss Marple & Press Gang. I managed to find an old DWM interview with him from 2003 and have used some bits from it that I thought were interesting/amusing.

Also, I realised at the beginning of this year that everything I'd seen him in, his characters didn't end well, so I went looking for things in which that didn't happen. So I've chalked up happy/unhappy endings (but not in a spoilery way). Indeed, a website I chanced on described him as a "Perennial player of gentle naive creatures with a delightful sing-song voice that invariably come to grief." (Although my main experience being DW, I found that he was just as likely to be the bad guy and come to grief deservedly as well.)

There is probably no excuse for this )

Three more finally typed up from my birthday crossover meme. Sorry about the delay (especially given how long I've had a couple of these sitting in a notebook):

1. Cut and Dried: Inspector Japp and the Seventh Doctor (Poirot/DW) requested by [livejournal.com profile] jjpor
All ages
1,500 words.
(This was meant to be Seven and Ace, as requested, but Bernice wanted to come, too. Sorry about that.)

The case was proving a bit tricky to say the least )

2. Bargaining: Spike and Dana Scully (BtVS/X-Files) requested by [livejournal.com profile] daibhid_c
PG (for Spike being Spike, generally)
1,331 words

So, what sort of bird likes cutting up dead people for fun? )

3. Observation: Luna Lovegood and Miss Marple (Harry Potter/Agatha Christie) requested by [livejournal.com profile] lizzie_marie_23
All ages
355 words

Watching the Roses )

Crossover meme fic. Please don't shoot me anyone, because I was meaning to type up the other two I have already written first, but with the editing of End Game stretching on this was as far as I got all week. It's just that I do realise I've now done all three of [livejournal.com profile] curuchamion's prompts. *cough* liked them all.
