Another fic for [community profile] no_true_pair! This one, for Day 8 – Copper and the Brigadier play a board game.

Because if a random prompt gives you an element and a board game, you're legally obliged to write the near-world-ending time anomaly that must result. Top marks to the randomiser for that one!

So, in other writing news, both my treat recip and the [community profile] rainbowfic mod turned up to comment and make my day at exactly the same time a couple of days ago. (Why do things all come together when they weren't at all connected?) So then I was happy.

But [community profile] justmarriedexchange has now had author reveals and so here is what I wrote - a gift and a treat, both in Doctor Who.

I got [personal profile] senmut as my recip, which was good fun - a whole bunch of relationship tags that I liked to choose from and also they were dizzyingly rash enough to request Any Tag. (You will not be surprised to learn that given the choice of any tag in the tagset, they therefore immediately got a variant of Accidental Marriage off me, ahem, ahem.)

Anyway, I had a nice, manageable idea for Three/Brig/Liz and I do love s7 so much... and then it just grew! How did it grow? But it was also a really lovely fic to have living in my head and I'm still really pleased with how it came out and I liked the idea of the alien world involved as well.

Farewell Tour (11974 words) by thisbluespirit
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Third Doctor/Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart/Liz Shaw
Characters: Third Doctor (Doctor Who), Liz Shaw (Doctor Who), Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, John Benton
Additional Tags: Accidental Marriage, Post-Serial: s054 Inferno, Blood and Injury, Aliens - Think They're Married, Aliens - Artifact Creates Marriage, Marriage of Convenience
Summary: “Doctor,” said the Brigadier, “you’re not saying you’ve stranded all three of us on an alien planet, with no way back home – and we’re married?”

I was also determined to write a Five/Tegan treat for [personal profile] ceruleantactician who had requested it as well, and one of their tags gave me a fun idea, so I did this. (I could have done Five/Tegan for the gift, but this way in theory I could have both worlds. And also my idea for my gift was really not that long or anything... lol) Which means I would have liked to maybe have added a little more to this one, but hopefully it's fine and fun(ny) and sweet as it is, and omg, people not me requested Five/Tegan. More than one even! 0_o

Summary: The Doctor and Tegan need vital information to save a planetary system, but there’s one small legal requirement they must fulfil first...

Anyway, that was fun, and I seem to have read most of my flist's stories while we were all undercover! (I guessed [personal profile] lurking_latinist - thank you for the treat!! - and [personal profile] astrogirl, and at least suspected [personal profile] senmut, but I'm now laughing that I completely failed to recognise [personal profile] paranoidangel. Because I should always suspect [personal profile] paranoidangel by this time...)

But it was fun, even with that long wait in the middle! (Let's not do that part again.) And thanks as ever to [personal profile] persiflage_1 who beta-ed them both for me. <3

My first [community profile] no_true_pair fic, for Day 3 "Annabelle hits it off with someone at a costume party/ball; wait it's the Brigadier?"! It's also for [community profile] 51pluscrossoverfandoms prompt #46 "work."

It's Annabelle POV, but it is entirely unspoilery and not actually very shippy or anything. And not a proper unmasking, but I hope this works too... (Stewart and Jason would, of course, not entirely be left out when Annabelle was off dancing with strange military gentlemen.)

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner featuring a cup of frothy coffee or hot chocolate on a plate with a piece of greenery and a cozy comforter with a sprig of baby’s breath. Text: Snowflake Challenge: 1-31 January.

Challenge #6: In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

I thought I'd follow up yesterday's post with recs for my very obscure fandoms, mostly written for me, because people are kind - but not always! So here we go:

The Shadow of the Tower
(Given the nature of the fandom, most of these can be read as straight historical RPF if you are interested in WotR/early Tudors.)

The Endris Night by ancarett
G, 2140 words. Elizabeth of York/Henry VII.) What is life at the court? Is it all plots and planning or is it something more? Elizabeth brings her own strengths as she prepares to marry the new king.

Not strictly marked with the canon, but written for me and ancarett clearly used the SotT portrayals of the two. This is a lovely, tentative beginning for a royal relationship.

Seven Sevens by [personal profile] allegoriesinmediasres
(Teen, 593 words. Catherine of Aragon, Arthur Tudor, Henry VIII, Margaret Tudor, Mary I, Henry VII, Elizabeth of York.) 1501. Seven sevens will command your life.

Clever ficlet taking one of Catherine of Aragon's scenes in the series as a starting point.

A Falcon at Stoke Field by [personal profile] kaffy_r
(Teen, 926 words. Lambert Simnel.) One name had been left behind, the next was never his to begin with. In the aftermath of Stoke Field, Lambert Simnel chooses a new identity.

Excellent look at Lambert Simnel in the aftermath of Stoke (& a great little episode tag for Ep4).

Into the Light by [personal profile] theseatheseatheopensea
(G, 1698 words. The Prisoner, Silver, Copper.) There is a method to what they do—to what they are. There is something about time—a prodigious mystery, an immensity, an unimaginable infinity, and he finds it again. He has always been here, after all. And he will be here again. And they will always be here, keeping time moving forward, safely, as it should. After the fire, Copper finds some answers.

Crossover with Sapphire & Steel. Eerie and beautiful timey-wimey look at the Prisoner's fate in episode 5, which may or may not be bound up with some "Elements."

Whose Bitter Tears by misura
(G, 906 words. John de la Pole Earl of Lincoln, Henry VII.) Lincoln receives an unexpected visitor in Dublin.

Lincoln says that Henry Tudor is in is very heart in the lead-up to Stoke, and here's a brilliantly in-tone look at one of the forms that feeling might take.

Fanart by [personal profile] liadt - the serious, a lovely drawing of Henry & Elizabeth from one of my stories and the glorious crack with bonus Time Travelling Spies (and anachronistic underpants).

Department S
One Cold Knight by [personal profile] swordznsorcery
(G, 5888 words. Annabelle Hurst, Stewart Sullivan, Jason King, Sir Curtis Seretse, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw.) For Fandom Stocking. The Department S gang team up with UNIT.

Crossover with Doctor Who. UNIT and Department S's work inevitably collides in this wonderful pitch-perfect casefic.

The Highgate Vampire by [personal profile] theseatheseatheopensea
(G, 1000 words. Annabelle Hurst, Jason King, Stewart Sullivan, Silver.) Highgate, North London. December 1969. Fragments from a very straight-forward case. (Or: a case told in 10 drabbles.)

Crossover with Sapphire & Steel. Brilliant drabble fic of a case that's even weirder than usual for Department S, plus important cravat envy.

King or Country by Timeless-A-Peel
(Teen, 6321 words. Jason King, Tara King, Martin King, John Steed.) 1972. Tara King receives an unexpected visit from a distant relative.

Crossover with The Avengers. More properly Jason King (the sequel serial), but still excellent - Jason King is, as it turns out, distantly related to Tara King - and every so often, they can find ways to help each other out.

(There are no works for The Power Game not by me, but I'll stop moaning now. ;-p)

Fandom: Doctor Who (1963), Public Eye (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Frank Marker
Additional Tags: Crossover, POV Outsider, POV First Person, Private Investigators
Summary: For one private detective, missing persons cases and inexplicable vanishing police boxes seem to go together

Also here on Teaspoon.

I hope people aren't too be put off by the obscure crossover - I was making use of Public Eye to do an Outsider POV for Doctor Who. (I kind of hope no one who actually knows Public Eye reads it, really. Bit of a nerve to go round attempting writing Frank Marker POV on this short acquaintance, but I thought it'd work rather nicely from the Doctor Who angle. They intersect quite naturally, but come from two very different viewpoints. /o\)

(I wanted to add in a section where someone from Polly's family employs Marker to buy off this random sailor she's moved in with, but realised he'd be in Birmingham by that point, so it was a bit hard to come up with any realistic reason why that would happen. Life is so hard at times... Still, it wouldn't have actually involved a police box, so maybe it's all for the best.)

Various links to things that have pleased me over the last day or two:

(And, yes, one of these links actually does combine both, so there!)

[livejournal.com profile] dbskyler has a post of fanvid recs for Brigadier/Nicholas Courtney tributes. This is a good thing. (Almost all my flist are friends with each other these days, but there may be some who aren't, so the link is here in case.)

There's finally a new prompt up at [livejournal.com profile] dw_straybunnies. It is of course Brigadier-related. (How could it not be?)

[livejournal.com profile] b7friday had last week's prompt as Sarkoff in tribute to a memorable one-off character played by T P McKenna (who has also passed away of late) and following the news about Nicholas Courtney, [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v saw fit to write this ficlet. (All ages, 400 words.) All you need to know is re B7 is that this is in the future. Sarkoff is an anti-Federation President with an interest in Earth history. The Federation are nasty. As usual, in B7, the good guys are losing, but wait... Who's this? (ETA: I didn't properly explain that it is lovely, and made me smile very, very much.)

Also I found, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] aelfgyfu_mead this comparison chart for Star Trek and Blake's 7

It is so true, it made me grin rather a lot. (Although I think these days Janeway would probably question 8. And 22.)

*sniggers again at 18, 19 and 12. And 16. And 8.*
thisbluespirit: (dw - brigadier)
What a thing to wake up to - and I can see my flist is saying everything that I might say, and more, and better, so I'll link to this news article that says it all very succintly, rather than waffle.

And so I'll just do what I always do, and make fic recs, because the Brigadier would never have been the awesome character everyone loves to read/write about were it not for the immense charm and likeability of Nicholas Courtney, who with his seemingly endless fondness for the role and the show became far much more to everyone involved than 'just' an actor who was in it for a few years.

1. I've been a bit quiet on the fic front, having been tired lately (and stories go too flat, so I had to leave them all waiting once I'd done the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen one). However, talking of [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen, I notice that they've posted the first two stories - yay! - and nice pieces of work they are, too, If the rest are as good this is going to be an excellent ficathon.

2. I hadn't forgotten StarCrossed and it's now got a lot more links on it and looks at least a little less random. And then I thought of another, similar idea, but I'll let you in on that when I've actually put something sensible on it. (Yes, mad librarian trying to catalogue things again, I know.)

3. In the process of this I had an idea for an Angel crossover of my own. (I do rather love Angel). And then, today, when I finally was able to write again, what did I do? My 1851 story, the Hex/Martha one, said Angel crossover or the next Happy Ending? No, I decided to do a Polly/Brig bit for [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000; but it did what all my attempts for that cause do, and went long and gen. It's here, or will be when it gets okayed on Teaspoon. (It's called The Polly Effect. I went on a train today. I pretty much always end up with a fic idea after going on a train.)

Edit: And, and, and, someone just reviewed my Really Obscure piece of fanfic.  I stuck it on ff.net about three weeks ago, since it might as well sit there (in the British Comedy section, On The Up, not being counted as a show) and someone else who watched the show has just given it love.  *dances for joy* (Not that I didn't really appreciate your reading it, too [livejournal.com profile] bugiarda!!)

Title: How the West Was Lost
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Characters: Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Rating: All Ages / PG (There is much typical Carry On-ness and some comic violence).
Other: Set between Inferno and Terror of the Autons.  Crossover with Carry On Cowboy.

Summary
: What the good citizens of Stodge City want is a US peace Marshal to run the Rumpo Kid out of town. What they get is a confused sanitation engineer, demure Miss Oakley with a rifle in her trunk, an elegant Time Lord who's the livin' spit of the dead Sheriff and a sceptical Brigadier who might just be the only man in the town who can shoot straight.  The Wild West was never like this...

Link
: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=28657

Disclaimer
: I don't own Doctor Who; the BBC does.  And I wouldn't dream of laying claim to the Carry On franchise, which is property of Gerald Thomas & Peter Rogers (I presume)

(Edit: It's now complete.)

As I noted a few entries below, Carry On Cowboy has Jon Pertwee as the ill-fated Sheriff, Angela Douglas (aka Doris Lethbridge-Stewart) as Annie Oakley, and Peter Butterworth as the Doc (The Meddling Monk).  It's crying out for a comic crossover with many dodgy accents and much trying of the Brigadier's patience.
