I started this on 27th Feb 2021 for [community profile] 100fandomicons and have finally completed it, after taking longer than anybody else ever has, which I suppose is one claim to fame. (You can see the fandoms if you hover over the icons.)

So, [community profile] chocolateboxcomm has now been and gone, and I can thank [personal profile] lurking_latinist and [personal profile] romanajo123 for my gifts, both for Five/Tegan - Doubt and Doubles and Just This One Time. (Again, [personal profile] lurking_latinist! ♥)

I was assigned to [personal profile] calliopes_pen, and wrote three stories for Dracula (TV 1968) - and thanks to Pers for beta-ing for me again! The first two were Canon Divergence AUs based on their prompts and the other a post-canon fic (I - sort of - had made this one earlier!)

I wrote a Lucy/Mina ficlet for their prompt about an AU where Mina interrupts Dracula's nighttime visits to Lucy...

Summary: Dracula's visit to Lucy is interrupted. It's not a good night for the Count.

And then for their Van Helsing & Dracula prompt, about Van Helsing's giving in to Dracula tempting him with all his knowledge at the end, which was too fascinating not to write. This version has a rather more severe Van Helsing than many of them, so it was a fun AU to explore.

And, finally, for their Jon/Mina/John request, I actually had almost all of this piece written out in rough from a previous Yuletide, but wasn't able to do what I'd planned with it at the time due to illness. I wasn't quite sure if I'd be able to get it into shape and typed up for Chocolate Box, but I did, so here it is:

I had meant to write some other treats because there were so many fun requests, especially in the Doctor Who fandom (there were even other Five/Tegan requesters! Unheard of!) But I got a tad carried away with my assignment mostly because I just had to dust off the would-be hellfire club in the Hotel in Bridlington (although I still did not even get to use the whole Wold Newton Triangle thing).

I scraped in with one last Whumptober effort with this. (3/31, not bad? Heh.) [personal profile] calliopes_pen suggested Dracula (TV 1968) for Day 27 "Extreme Weather" and how can I resist a 1960s Dracula prompt? (It's not quite as suggested, because I started it that way, realised it was clearly going to take me 5-10k again, so I switched direction and came up with this instead. It's still not a ficlet, though, dammit! It was totally going to be a ficlet. Two ficlets!! It is not.)

Oh, and I am amused because if you live in the UK and wanted to celebrate Halloween by staying up till 1.30am and watching James Maxwell faint on actual telly tonight in Mystery & Imagination's version, you totally can thanks to Talking Pictures. I'm going to bed, but I do think that's pretty wonderful. XD

I managed three out of the four prompts on my [community profile] hc_bingo 'stamp' (deadline/time bomb, possession/mind-control and sensory deprivation, although I am tempted to claim the fourth as well (orphans) on the technical basis that Mina is definitely an orphan in this, but I thought it was a tad too technical.)

Going through the letters, I loved [personal profile] halotolerant's Battle of Hastings request. They wanted crack and this instantly occurred to me and my main worry was that I would not have time or strength to eventually write it after my assignment and the giant treat above. (Well, until I wrote it, and then I worried in case they wanted crack, but not a Modern AU.) It went down well, luckily, and everyone was happy; the perfect Yule outcome, except for me thinking belatedly of Jokes I Should Have Made/forgot when typing in a hurry.

Do you want 1066 retold in a 21st epistolary Organic Farming AU? Possibly not, but I have 100% for real been told in the comments that it has a better ending than canon. So, my fic - totally better than an arrow to the eye! It's official.

(It is instead now one of those things where I reckon if I sound tongue in cheek enough about cliches I can merrily skip over plot and thus not implode my brain. It's always weird trying to write recovered Jonathan for this adaptation, because it really does not give you much idea of what he's like, other than far less into Mina than book Jonathan, but at least I didn't kill him to get round it again. Oh, and clones in this being in the general meaning of 'duplicates'. It was an interesting prompt, though (even if it wasn't the one I was meant to be writing), as Mina/John/Jonathan is a logical solution to some issues of their post-canon situation when you think about it. (It's just obv. not as good as Mina/Lucy/John.)
thisbluespirit: (Dracula)
I still don't feel great, but at least a bit better, and I have managed to finish off typing up the last part of this post-canon Dracula (TV 1968) fic, which I started sometime last autumn. It got slightly derailed because I adapted one of the segments into a Yuletide treat for [personal profile] calliopes_pen as it matched one of her prompts, but I decided that story ended up differently enough even from that particular segment of this to warrant typing this up as well. Summary: Mina’s one remaining desire is simple: she wants revenge.

I'm never less anonymous than when writing for Dracula (TV 1968), but one of [personal profile] calliopes_pen's prompts, about the Harkers getting revenge on Van Helsing, matched something I'd already come up with. (A five times fic about Mina, which actually I might type up as well anyway, since this adaptation of the end segment wound up very different to the original.) And, er, what the tags say, really!

Characters: Adam Adamant, William E. Simms, Georgina Jones, Louise (Adam Adamant Lives), Other(s)
Additional Tags: Victorian, 5 Times, Yuletide Treat, Humor, Bondage, 1960s, Hijinks & Shenanigans
Summary: In Adam’s line of work, getting tied up is practically a daily occurrence.

I'd also wanted to do two AAL! stories (the other one being Liadt's prompt about Adam's house), but that was over-ambitious, but at the eleventh hour before I left for home, I managed to finish this, which was pure frivolous fun and I enjoyed coming up with the canon-typical ridiculous scenarios and also dropping rl historical figures into them too just because I could. (I'm sorry, Liadt! One day!)

(With many thanks to [personal profile] persiflage_1 who never even blinks regardless of what I ask her to beta, or when, or how fast and who went through all three of them to catch any typos and moments of ME-incoherency. <3 <3 <3)

And, as I've said, my gifts were pretty fab all round and at least now I know who to thank! And I may be able to write a couple NYRs too, which would be great. And next year I will be v v careful about what I sign up for. (The thing about book fandoms is that in most cases, I still find reading hard work, so canon review exhausted me and squashed any hope of fic before I'd started, especially once life also took a hand. Whoops.)

I wrote a fic for this year's New Year's Resolutions, for [personal profile] calliopes_pen, because I'd been trying to think of something a little more Jonathan-centric (although everybody else still got in on the act; I can't help it!) and also reflecting on the differences between the book and the TV adaptation and this bit of pre-canon exploration happened:

And so my treats. I wrote the first for [personal profile] calliopes_pen, chiefly in a hopeless attempt to remain anonymous, so that she might at least wonder which one was me. Then there were two prompts in particular that jumped out at me this year, the first being Wasuremono's great prompt about Miss Marple being a goddess, the genius loci of St Mary Mead, which I obviously had to write:

The second was for moemachina, about Feste & Olivia from Twelfth Night. As I've loved Feste since I did the play for A-Levels mumble years ago, I couldn't resist. I had an idea, but then remembered that writing Shakespeare fic is TERRIFYING. So I watched BBC TN twice in a row, found some 16th C jokes and riddles on the internet, built my fic around those and then went for it. And then typed it up while mentally going LALALA not writing Shakespeare etc. Happily, it seems to have got some really lovely comments, so I clearly didn't mess it up too badly.

That done, I decided to write a couple of treats for Madness if I could, but the Adam Adamant Lives! fic for Liadt grew large enough for the main collection, even if it was probably too frivolous for Yuletide (and I don't think Liadt was fooled by my anonymity for a minute, either):

Additional Tags: References to Mina Harker/Lucy Weston, Vampires, Hypnotism, Post-Canon, World War I, Victorian, Edwardian Period, Blood, Yuletide, Dark, Religious Imagery & Symbolism
Summary: Dracula may have been defeated, but the future has never been less certain for Jonathan and Mina. Everything has changed, most especially the Harkers themselves…

I both enjoyed writing this a lot (despite surface dissimilarities, we clearly overlap on a lot of tropes and things, which made it particularly fun to do) and worried about it far too much! Par for the course for Yuletide, really, I suppose. The adaptation has a rather open, ambiguous ending (Mina is still showing vampiric influence, while we don't even know what sort of state Jonathan is left in), so it was really interesting to try and write one possibility of what might happen next. I planned it to be somewhere around 8,000-12,000 words - and then it more than doubled in size, taking me way outside my current comfort zone in what I can do without making myself ill. I regret nothing, though. Except that it doesn't have even more stuff calliopes_pen likes in it.

Some ramblings about writing it )

And some rambling thoughts on reading Dracula for it )

And I'll have to go and rest now, so I'll post the treats in another post later.

* The upshot of this is that now I want fic about the housekeepers. The housekeepers are great, even if it took me ages to get their actual names straight! Mrs Hopkins is not fazed by anything! (She works in an asylum; fair enough) and Mrs Perkins bosses Mrs Weston about all the time. And they're both tiny and fierce! (O, Network, when will you run to subtitles on your releases?)

** I have to say, The Woman in White must surely have been an influence - asylums, wicked counts, Laura and Marian and Lucy and Mina, mesmerism etc. even in addition to the Collins-esque epistolary/evidence-gathering format.
thisbluespirit: (cat)
I was feeling a bit down and so thought of doing this as maybe an occasional thing: here are five nice things I've bookmarked recently:

Third Time Pays For All by JohnAmendAll (G, 922 words, Lucy Weston/Mina Harker/John Seward.) Lucy had been vaguely expecting a confession of a clandestine love affair between her fiancé and her best friend. The truth was far stranger.

Written for me in a recent meme, this is a lovely Dracula TV 1968 fic from the prompt Lucy/Mina/John & timeloops.

Appropriately enough, two very excellent DW fics from the [livejournal.com profile] who_at_50 53rd Anniversary Fanworkathon:

The Scientific Method by nonelvis (Teen, 1723 words. Implied Liz/Brig; Liz/Kate Stewart) Five moments in the life of Elizabeth Shaw. Liz, being awesome as ever.

An Offer You Can't Refuse by Shivver (All ages, 4959 words.) Trying to recover an ailing population's stolen medical supplies, the Doctor and Ace come up empty when the smuggler's trail goes cold. Great missing adventure for Seven & Ace (never an offer I can refuse, that's for certain).

Dance Apocalyptic by thingswithwings and eruthros I really really wanna thank you for dancing to the end. Amazing multi-fandom vid about when the world is ending.

I get so used to finding no fic I like when I poke into modern fandoms (just endless fluff and AUs and ships), that I was actually shocked when I looked into Ripper Street on AO3 and found actual multiple good fics. (I suppose it is a fandom where one of the main attractions is its use of language...)

Inspector Reid's Catalogue of Criminals by shyday (G, 6616 words. Edmund Reid, Homer Jackson, Fred Abberline.) An archive fic. Great capturing of the voices - Reid, his obsessions and dreams and his archive project. (set shortly before 3.01).

Because I finally got started on Ripper Street S4 (\o/ But I am only 1 ep in; don't spoil me) and THIS HAPPENED. (No, it was not that they shot Matthew Macfadyen in beautiful blue lighting with perfect matching tie; that happens a lot. It's one of the reasons I watch.) It was much better than that (but probably only if you are me):

50 year snap )

In other news, Yuletide progress continues and I'm behind deadline for my Fourth Doctor recs post (the two facts are not unrelated) which I thought was today. Readers, it was yesterday. I hope to have it posted by at least tomorrow.
