As I said, I sort of stopped updating properly for a bit. Just the usual low patch, but I navigated last month's better in terms of posting than this month's.

1. I did manage to do three Fannish ficlets for [community profile] no_true_pair and still have some [community profile] rainbowfic ones I'll post for their amnesty, so that is quite good. Although I was quite blurry, I'm not sure how they turned out, really.

2. [community profile] unconventionalcourtship is back! Time to pick a terrible romance novel and kill it with fanfiction or whatever your preferred approach is. As ever, you can ask the brilliant Unconventional Courtship Generator for ideas if you don't want to personally wade through Mills & Boon's back catalogue.

3. [community profile] genprompt_bingo is open for a new round!

4. I don't know what is happening with this year, but I received a NYR gift from [personal profile] edwardianspinsteraunt for The Winslow Boy! It is amazing! I need to go comment properly, and will soon, but spent all day finishing off doing the 100 list thingies going around (see point 5.)

5. I've been doing the tumblr-moved-to-Dreamwidth top 100 personal favourite/foundational movies list, plus, because I picked it up from [personal profile] lirazel (who I think was the one that added the other two categories), also 100 TV series, which took the longest. In the meantime, while it moved round my flist, it became solely a book list meme instead, because I suppose that is tumblr vs Dreamwidth for you, lol.

I'm not entirely surely fiddling with things for a week has made my lists any less weird. (You have to bear in mind that my most influential/favourite things, like everyone, tend to be from when I was growing up/younger but then also I have spent the last 15 years having appalling trouble trying to just read or watch anything and at least 5 or so years of that time solving that problem by watching slow-paced Brit TV, some of which was genuinely awesome and then the loss of DVDs for the past 3-5 years has completely scotched any means I had of watching anything not on terrestrial UK TV or the iPlayer. But it does make my list look like it was made by someone whose next words will be muttering about isn't modern stuff too Ruined By The Woke, which is very distressing to me, but that's why. I might mutter that people should write TV episodes like they're one act plays again instead of a soap opera installment and that it honestly doesn't have to cost THAT much to be good, but that's as far as it goes re. the worst effects of all the beige tv on my brain, I promise. It was excellent beige TV! And the bits that weren't, I was looking at James Maxwell's nose or Alfie's face or Suzanne Neve's awesome anyway. And the reading has been even worse, except the few books that worked could at least be from any era, because so far they haven't changed how that works. BUt, still, they had to be old enough to be chanced upon in charity shops so...)

If you want distractions of clicking things and telling me that you also watched/read about 10 of these, here is the film list, the TV List (much beige TV included some of which I had to add manually) and the books list.

No doubt I have forgotten obvious things and would probably make different lists again next week, but I had fun. It had some of the most obscure books and films on it, it just had issues with the TV sometimes.

I'm a bit too tired to do what I wanted to do this evening (although I have done what I needed to do, so there's that). Anyway, I remembered I made a DW companion-swap generator that one time!

Obv I have to share some results, which either amused me or I would absolutely read, or both:

The Twelfth Doctor and Bernice in an adventure with a stolen vehicle, armed only with their wits and art.

The Sixth Doctor and Clara in an adventure with a double bluff that backfires, armed only with their wits and cue cards.

The Thirteenth Doctor and Wilf in an adventure with the Sea Devils, armed only with their wits and one telephone call.

The Seventh Doctor and Tegan and Turlough in an adventure inside a lighthouse, armed only with their wits and a secret escape route.

The Eleventh Doctor and Jackie in an adventure overthrowing the government, armed only with their wits and some cheating.

The Ninth Doctor and Yaz and Dan in an adventure with a stuck button, armed only with their wits and a candle.

The Sixth Doctor and Anji in an adventure with vampires, armed only with their wits and Bessie.

And, of course, since it is the funniest, also some Unconventional Courtship Generator summaries under here )

It's [community profile] unconventionalcourtship time again!

I asked what I'd forgotten last post and [personal profile] liadt quite rightly said, [community profile] unconventionalcourtship! And I thought, great, that's two things for the next post! (Who knows what the other thing was? Not me.)

Anyway, it's a laid back old school writing fest where you pick a romance novel summary, choose characters/OT-whatever to inflict it onto, sign up to post on a chosen day and that's it, really. Whether the resulting fic is at all romantic or not is up to you.

Check out the comm for more details, selections of banners to use to promote it (and indeed, the template to make your own). They have lists of summaries if you don't want to go hunting for them in the wild.

There's even the Unconventional Courtship Generator so you can choose one by randomness and hilarity: http://www.seasip.info/Misc/ucrpg.html

(You can customise it and put your own characters in, as well as the preset ones.)

I mean, what more can you ask of a fest?

ETA: Because obviously I couldn't say that and not play with the generator )
thisbluespirit: (s&s)
I was feeling a bit blah for the last day (mostly because I did a mix of nice/stupid things the last couple of days!) and cheered myself up no end generating these last night. And of course, what would ever stop me sharing the continuing saga of Dalek Sec's eternally doomed attempts at a love life?

And more under here )

1. [community profile] genprompt_bingo is open for sign-ups for its latest round! (I have a bingo to post from my last card, so I think I shall get a new one! soon! \o/)

2. [community profile] allbingo is having a Gothic Bingo for April, which I haven't looked at properly yet, but I feel I should. I mean, I haven't done the flowers one yet, but it's not as if anyone minds at [community profile] allbingo and I am making progress.

3. [community profile] unconventionalcourtship is back! And this time it's 10, can you believe it? Anyway, snag yourself an improbable romance novel summary and then commit fic crimes with it. What more could anyone ask of a fest?

3b. Never forget you can ask the UC Generator for ideas. It may not help but it will make life seem brighter, and is exactly what those summaries deserve, really.

4. Not quite on the same lines as the above, but you know how sometimes you're looking at the books on the supermarket's charity bookstall and then you see one so terrible you have to pay 50p and bring it home with you to examine more carefully and also show your internet friends exactly what a terrible thing you have just acquired?

Anyway, that. )
thisbluespirit: (dw - daleks)
I had to go out yesterday, am therefore v ill again for a bit. The result was: I amused myself with the Unconventional Courtship Generator again yesterday. (I made a new customised list of random people I like from things I didn't want to make a whole list from. It didn't feel inclined to use most of them, but if the occasional intruder pops up in these, that's why.)

under here be shenanigans and generally a lot less romance than the summaries would like to claim )

1. [community profile] unconventionalcourtship is back! Yes, you can sign up for the annual fest in which you choose a romance novel summary and then kill it with fanfic or art create something based, at least roughly, on it! It's fun, laid back, and comes with a free generator that never fails to make everything better for at least a short while. (Shipping not required! You can use the summary however you choose.)

2. [community profile] genprompt_bingo is open for a new round! I'm very fond of this one - it has great prompts and no restricting theme (the gen is solely about the prompts, not the fills, you can ship away as much as you like). Mind you, not that I've finished my last card yet, and I do think I was close to a bingo.

3. Nothing to do with writing, and less frivolous also, but another of my old telly faves Jennifer Wilson died yesterday.

Back when I first started venturing into the b&w and/or beige world of old Brit TV, I was chasing David Collings about the place, and acquired S1 of Special Branch (1969), because he was in it. Jennifer Wilson played a female Det. Sgt. in the b&w episodes and I loved her so much that eventually, I went off to watch The Brothers, which I have waffled about here more recently. I know nothing much else about her, really, but she just had a such a wonderfully warm and natural presence on the screen. (Mariocki, on tumblr, who told me, always calls her "lovely Jenny" when talking about her Brothers character (also Jennifer), and that's about right. She was 89 and had a good career and a good innings, but it's always sad when good people leave.

I made a thing, but I will do one with more roles in soon.

I've been feeling rotten post-Covid Jab #2 for the past few days, so generated myself some very random summaries to share in order to cheer myself (and other people):

Click here if you dare )
thisbluespirit: (dw - charley)
I am still not really coping, so am not keeping up. I will just continue to pop up with gifs, or in this case, fic, since I have also been managing some little bits of writing recently. Anyway, I have finished the birthday Unconventional Courtship fic(lets) for [personal profile] john_amend_all, plus the summaries I couldn't write but needed to share:

Leela/Ten )

Charley Pollard/Lucy Weston )

Holly/Fifth Doctor )

Bonus summaries )
thisbluespirit: (dw - daleks)
So, I continue to feel rotten, even though the weather is giving me a break but hey. ANYWAY, to turn to something more cheerful than weather, illness, and certainly than current news, [personal profile] liadt is running the [community profile] unconventionalcourtship fest again this summer! Sign-ups open now!

[community profile] unconventionalcourtship is the ficathon where you take a Mills & Book/Harlequin/Avon type book blurb and then kill it with fanfic use it as inspiration for a fic, as shippy or not, or cracky or serious or not as you please.

It's an old school fest, so you just choose a prompt and sign up for a posting day some time in August and there you are. \o/

Anyway, I doubt I can do it (see above), but in addition to pointing you to it, I have generated some random summaries from the Unconventional Courtship Generator in case anyone is short of ideas. I'm sure these would make great crack fic. XD (On more sensible note, you can also customise it for your own fandoms, too, if you want help with inspiration.)

a whole bevy of unholy pairings under here )
thisbluespirit: (Default)
1. [community profile] intoabar is open for sign-ups!

This is a fun old school ficathon (no exchange troubles here) where you choose a character you like and then choose 1-4 other fandoms you can write and the mods will randomly generate a character from those for your other character to meet (in a bar, hence the name). I wasn't sure which character to choose - I was going to have Obi-Wan Kenobi, and then I thought maybe Clara or even Jenkins, but then I decided that this was clearly the year to have Silver, so that's what I did (and chose SW Prequels, DW (12th Doctor Era), OUaT and Ripper Street as the fandoms. (I might regret Ripper Street, but I suddenly thought it could be really cool in this context.)

2. [community profile] justmarriedexchange is now open for nominations! (Cracky marriage tropes for all! Or possibly if you're not me, romantic shippy marriage tropes for everyone but people who evilly contemplate nomming S&S!)

3. as is [community profile] littleblackdressex which is for characters you ship with everyone/anyone. (The fandom bicycles, basically.) It's running at the same time as Just Married, so I won't be able to do it, but that does seem like a fun idea. (I definitely have some characters like that, though - Silver, Ruth Evershed, Clara Oswald, Obi-Wan Kenobi...)

4. [community profile] hc_bingo have got the last of their Amnesty challenges running (with no obligation to take part in any other aspect of the bingo) - the May Small Fandoms challenge, where you get a bingo 'stamp' of four prompts and you create something in a small fandom using 1-4 of those prompts.

I got one with "mind control/possession," "orphans," "deadline/time bomb," and "sensory deprivation" and thought, hmm, this is that Copper fic I wrote for [community profile] hc_bingo proper a while back, minus the orphans. At the moment, I'm thinking of using Dracula (TV 1968) as I have an idea and that should be under the 400 limit (which S&S probably isn't any more).

5. And, on top of all that, [community profile] unconventionalcourtship is deciding when to have its next round. (UC is a lot of fun - you take a Mills & Boon type romance novel summary and turn it into fic, either straight or with a lot of ridiculous and subverting and as gen or shippy as you wish. With bonus fandom book covers.) It's in summer, so I suspect that'll be out, but I do love it, so we'll see. (I have a perfect summary for Obi-Wan/Padme and an idea, but OTOH I have now written that a lot since January and it was tiring so someone should just write 10k of that for me.)
thisbluespirit: (five/tegan)
I managed ages ago to write two ficlets, courtesy of the Unconventional Courtship generator, for [personal profile] john_amend_all's birthday which was *mumble mumble* ago. I finally managed one more, so here goes. Crack is probably the only way to deal with rl right now anyway.

Belated happy birthday, John!

Three unconventional ficlets under here + bonus summaries )
thisbluespirit: (writing)
While I'm here, let's do the thing:

I love random generators! They are my favourite internet creative toy and responsible for many a fic from me, one way or another.

My favourite was the Genremixer, which sadly died, but thankfully [personal profile] john_amend_all stepped in and made another version, the Ersatz Genremixer. It is the one that most works for actually kick-starting fic for me. It's simple, adjustable to your preferences, allows you to put in your own choice of characters, it's sometimes semi-sentient, and altogether delightful.

Random results )

But for hours of amusement, the Unconventional Courtship Generator is probably even more fun. (I think because it gives you summaries, it's like little ridiculous stories in themselves without me having even to write them.) While I've been ill, I have cheered myself up with this more times than I can count, and certainly more times than I have ever written for the results. (Although I have written for the results, including the Steed/Baldrick one that [personal profile] astrogirl said I couldn't do. Few of them are romantic, but romance is most certainly not required.) It was originally made for [community profile] unconventionalcourtship ficathon (where you write fic based on terrible Mills & Boon type summaries, hence the generator full of them). You can type in your own characters here, too, if you wish to, although it comes pre-populated.

And then you get things like this.... )

Other generators that I am very fond of and/or find extremely useful:

this Bingo generator, which came via [community profile] allbingo, which I've used for both of the bingos I've run.

They Fight Crime (Just for the lols mainly: "He's a bookish small-town gentleman spy from a doomed world. She's a violent hip-hop nun from a secret island of warrior women. They fight crime!")

The Doctor Who Random Pairing Generator (the cause of a lot of DW fic from me once upon a time. Although, as with me and the UC generator, very rarely actually romantic, and still a favourite.)

The Cakefic Generator (cakefic is important!)

Probably one I should look at now, for my thingies, an Element Pairing Generator

And I have made an awful lot of use over the years of the random poetry generator for making prompts for memes and comms and things (despite its Emily Dickinson fixation).
thisbluespirit: (OUaT - belle)
I have been very up and down this week, for reasons that were mostly expected (although NOT that I should go as abruptly utterly flat as I did yesterday - I'm gradually making my way back to functionality again) but I am overdue in mentioning that [community profile] unconventionalcourtship is running again, which is some of the most fun you can have in a ficathon.

Basically, you use a Mills & Boon/Avon/Harlequin type summary and kill it with fanfic create fanfic out of it. (Shippiness or not at your own discretion, as long as it recognisably uses the summary.)

If you can't decide, you can always take the risk of getting the random generator to give you something.

As is traditional, I made a bunch of promotional banners. They're mainly quite sensible, which is a bit uncharacteristic of me, but here they are: (There are more at the comm, of course, and a template so you can make your own, which is stupid amounts of fun.)

Banners under here )

I don't know if I can take part or not yet, because summer, but it is very fun and laid back and not as shippy or necessarily as AU as you might suppose! That all depends on you and your summary and who you put in it. (I mean, my first one was Silver and Steel and they literally killed their summary because obviously it was dangerous. Why do people write cliched romance novels and cause trouble with time breaks?)
thisbluespirit: (dw - bill)
In the event of me seemingly getting worse at writing birthday ficlets, instead of better, I have for the past couple of years, taken the Unconventionalcourtship Generator and had a flash-fic writing session with it, tackling any prompts where I felt able to write both characters for [personal profile] john_amend_all's birthday. The end of June was particularly bad, so here it is, only slightly delayed.

One of the results that came up was clearly something I thought would amuse [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2, who also had a birthday around the same time, so, I'm calling that a belated present also. Plus some bonus summaries I failed at writing. (The whole package is like a bundle of those tacky plasticky things you get at the seaside, but I had fun.) I did this on different days, before and during my family's visit, so it all got a bit out of hand. But still mostly not even shippy. /o\

Unconventional Results Under Here )

[community profile] unconventionalcourtship is running again! It is the fest where you take a romance novel summary and kill it with fanfic write your own story from it (actual romance not necessary). It's always a lot of fun. There are banners, those are fun too. (I don't have one to hand right now, but there are lots at the comm. Some of them are even proper ships and things and not ones people made for the lols because of the tempting nature of the template.)

In the meantime, because of that, and because it's being summer, which is always unreasonable, have some summaries from the Unconventional Courtship Random Generator:

The return of that meme where you post random lines from any WIPs you have at the moment, because I felt like it.

(I see that I last did it in Jan 2016, which reminds me, I never did post that AAL! snippet as it stands. I should do that.)

More bondage, vampires, and fatal disasters under here )

That's four out of eight which are still the same old WIPs (and three from the previous post which I did complete in the meantime), but, to be fair, I keep writing and finishing other things in the meantime. I mean, I have [community profile] trope_bingo to finish and then I can destroy worlds for [community profile] tic_tac_woe! (I won't say nothing in the world can stop me, because some days it seems that just about anything in the world can stop me, especially in summer.)
thisbluespirit: (I Capture - writing)
I wrote a [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales AU (so effectively just unconnected origfic) for [community profile] unconventionalcourtship this year (written back in January) but for various reasons, I wound up never posting it for the fest. However, I discovered it fitted a [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo square ("fall from grace"), so I pulled it out again and have now further edited it, tweaked it, had it beta-ed, and finally got the ending more to my liking. I don't imagine it'll be of much interest to anyone, but here it is, nonetheless, and about time, really. (Sorry [personal profile] aralias for all my wibbling back in spring/summer! Hopefully next year will be better. But at least now I get a bingo square too...)

Title: Scandal of the Town
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Fandom: Original Work
Pairing/Characters: Julia Graves/Edward Iveson (OFC/OMC)
Rating: Teen
Length: 26,067 words (3 chapters)
Summary: Thanks to one indiscretion, Edward Iveson's life and reputation is in ruins, until Julia Graves comes to his rescue with a proposal of marriage. Edward can hardly turn her down, but what is it that Julia wants from him?

From this summary, although it went seriously off-piste (but [personal profile] aralias kindly said it could still count for the fest. I got carried away with the first line and forgot that the rest of the summary would demand pr0n neither I nor my characters are up to):

138) In the Flesh- Portia Da Costa

Victorian society already believes he’s a scarlet man. Why not become one? Edward’s reputation is in tatters. With scandalous photographs of him being scrutinized by the ton and his brother running them into debt, Edward’s only hope – a respectable marriage – is dashed. Then powerful, wealthy Julia offers an indecent proposal: for one month of hedonistic servitude she’ll pay off his brother’s debts. But nothing can prepare Edward for the worst, for discovering that he enjoys his degradation and delights in the dark fantasies that Julia has awakened. In fact, he’s fast becoming addicted to a life, and a woman, who can never wholly be his…

Notes: Also written for [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales (prompts "role reversal" and "settle") and [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo square "fall from grace). Some references to suicide and murder. With many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 for the beta! (♥ Pers!)

1. It is nearly time for the Obscure & British Commentfest! I was in two minds whether to run it or not this year - up until a few weeks ago, ever since when I've been basically hopping up and down going "Is it time yet? IS IT NOW?" Well, next weekend and onwards, it will be. The May online b'day party for those who love obscure and British fandoms. (For a given meaning of obscure; please let's not go into that again...)

\o/ Any fandoms I should make banners of that I haven't already done?

2. I made a thing: an Unconventional Courtship Generator Tumblr. It seemed like disposing of the masses of cracky summaries I've generated via Tumblr was one of the things it might be useful for. We shall see! (Probably not. Is Tumblr useful for anything in the end, except that lonely in a crowd feeling? /cynical yet hopeful)

3. Sorry about the meme ficlets I owe. For some reason, when Victoria Wood died, it really knocked me off my stride. I don't know why. Hopefully this week! (Please send a note to other celebrities not to die and inconvenience my fannish pursuits).

... nearly the commentfest. *nods*

ETA: Also am reading more terrible Regency Romances. Latest heroines were called Roslyn and Lindsey. Lindsey has a sister called Blythe. /o\
