1. The classic Who reactor I'm following at the moment managed to reach Earthshock somehow totally unspoiled, which produced a great reaction, both last week in Pts 1&2 at the Cyberman reveal (she loves Cybermen), and then at the final two parts here, pretty much as JNT intended, I'd say. /slightly sadistic, I suppose, sorry, but as someone who read so many of them in Target novelisation form first and got spoiled further by years of DWM first, it's completely fascinating to me.

(I do like this reactor - if you're looking for someone currently going through Classic Who, I'd recommend them - they're thoughtful, enjoying the ride and certain SFX and costumes & guest stars, adored the original Team TARDIS (important), but also willing to be critical sometimes too.)

2. Rarest of Rare Pairs Ficathon, which is actually a commentfest (for all types of fanworks) for rare pairs, so that's fun.

3. [community profile] small_fandoms has a fest going on for posting works in small fandoms there in August, based on a set of Rolling Stones lyrics prompts, which you can check out here.

Otherwise: ♥ all. (it was summer for at least a whole day here, and I'm still not any better at that yet.)

It's [community profile] unconventionalcourtship time again!

I asked what I'd forgotten last post and [personal profile] liadt quite rightly said, [community profile] unconventionalcourtship! And I thought, great, that's two things for the next post! (Who knows what the other thing was? Not me.)

Anyway, it's a laid back old school writing fest where you pick a romance novel summary, choose characters/OT-whatever to inflict it onto, sign up to post on a chosen day and that's it, really. Whether the resulting fic is at all romantic or not is up to you.

Check out the comm for more details, selections of banners to use to promote it (and indeed, the template to make your own). They have lists of summaries if you don't want to go hunting for them in the wild.

There's even the Unconventional Courtship Generator so you can choose one by randomness and hilarity: http://www.seasip.info/Misc/ucrpg.html

(You can customise it and put your own characters in, as well as the preset ones.)

I mean, what more can you ask of a fest?

ETA: Because obviously I couldn't say that and not play with the generator )

1. [community profile] no_true_pair is gearing up for its Spring mini-round with sign-ups opening on March 12th! Given that I had such a lovely time with it in September, I'll definitely be giving it another go. I have to decide on my character list - only four characters this time! 8-o (If it's the same as the main round, you can have up to 3 lists, so I'm thinking I might do at least two and then see what I fancy writing the most. XD)

2. [community profile] hurtcomfortex is still in sign-ups. I don't think I should do it, really, all considered, but I always PINE for it (I could be my own OW tag for it: "Exchange Participant/Unsuitable Exchange They Are Nevertheless Pining Hopelessly For") so I'm keeping an eye on the sign-ups and, yep, as ever with this one, I have like 1 match again. Two, depending what I offer. BUt you never know, what if something jumped out and begged me to write a SHORT thing for it and then I could sign up (but oh no all those tags)...

3. Marginal March, a comment fest for Minor Characters

4. I no sooner said that Craddock and Co had gone from BBC Sounds when I looked, than the BBC decided to repeat it and now it's there again! So if anyone prefers that method, here it is, and they've reached all three eps now (it was still only 2 yesterday): https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/b00d2t72

5. I reached s3 of Death in Paradise (people who know will know what that means XD) but the BBC did compensate immediately because the following three eps have had Peter Davison (grumpy writer suspect), Josette Simon (fearsome judge suspect), and Raza Jaffrey (airline pilot suspect). Raza was a wonderful surprise, because he went off to the US to be in things I don't watch, so I was just: RAZA!!!! (Spooks fans will understand, because Zaf= <3<3<3 Also he is very illegally pretty, it's true. ETA: the motive for murder was basically jealousy over Raza, which, I mean. legit.)

My resolution to stop at this point was therefore broken. I'll see how long this stint of Actors From My All Time Fave Shows continues, lol, and in the meantime, here's a very lovely, fun/cute Richard and Camille fanvid by Odessie I found on AO3.

So, I continue to feel rotten, even though the weather is giving me a break but hey. ANYWAY, to turn to something more cheerful than weather, illness, and certainly than current news, [personal profile] liadt is running the [community profile] unconventionalcourtship fest again this summer! Sign-ups open now!

[community profile] unconventionalcourtship is the ficathon where you take a Mills & Book/Harlequin/Avon type book blurb and then kill it with fanfic use it as inspiration for a fic, as shippy or not, or cracky or serious or not as you please.

It's an old school fest, so you just choose a prompt and sign up for a posting day some time in August and there you are. \o/

Anyway, I doubt I can do it (see above), but in addition to pointing you to it, I have generated some random summaries from the Unconventional Courtship Generator in case anyone is short of ideas. I'm sure these would make great crack fic. XD (On more sensible note, you can also customise it for your own fandoms, too, if you want help with inspiration.)

a whole bevy of unholy pairings under here )
thisbluespirit: (writing)
I am (hopefully) maybe feeling a bit better today, or at least comparatively so, but the very sunny weather won't let up here, which is also tiring.

Meanwhile everyone else continues as if summer isn't the most exhausting thing ever and there seem to be a flood of shiny exchanges opening up:

Taking noms now:

[community profile] limitedtheatricalrelease - for movies, noms open till June 7th.

[community profile] everywoman - for female characters, noms open till June 8th.

[community profile] crossworks - for crossovers, noms open till June 10th.
thisbluespirit: (Default)
1. [community profile] intoabar is open for sign-ups!

This is a fun old school ficathon (no exchange troubles here) where you choose a character you like and then choose 1-4 other fandoms you can write and the mods will randomly generate a character from those for your other character to meet (in a bar, hence the name). I wasn't sure which character to choose - I was going to have Obi-Wan Kenobi, and then I thought maybe Clara or even Jenkins, but then I decided that this was clearly the year to have Silver, so that's what I did (and chose SW Prequels, DW (12th Doctor Era), OUaT and Ripper Street as the fandoms. (I might regret Ripper Street, but I suddenly thought it could be really cool in this context.)

2. [community profile] justmarriedexchange is now open for nominations! (Cracky marriage tropes for all! Or possibly if you're not me, romantic shippy marriage tropes for everyone but people who evilly contemplate nomming S&S!)

3. as is [community profile] littleblackdressex which is for characters you ship with everyone/anyone. (The fandom bicycles, basically.) It's running at the same time as Just Married, so I won't be able to do it, but that does seem like a fun idea. (I definitely have some characters like that, though - Silver, Ruth Evershed, Clara Oswald, Obi-Wan Kenobi...)

4. [community profile] hc_bingo have got the last of their Amnesty challenges running (with no obligation to take part in any other aspect of the bingo) - the May Small Fandoms challenge, where you get a bingo 'stamp' of four prompts and you create something in a small fandom using 1-4 of those prompts.

I got one with "mind control/possession," "orphans," "deadline/time bomb," and "sensory deprivation" and thought, hmm, this is that Copper fic I wrote for [community profile] hc_bingo proper a while back, minus the orphans. At the moment, I'm thinking of using Dracula (TV 1968) as I have an idea and that should be under the 400 limit (which S&S probably isn't any more).

5. And, on top of all that, [community profile] unconventionalcourtship is deciding when to have its next round. (UC is a lot of fun - you take a Mills & Boon type romance novel summary and turn it into fic, either straight or with a lot of ridiculous and subverting and as gen or shippy as you wish. With bonus fandom book covers.) It's in summer, so I suspect that'll be out, but I do love it, so we'll see. (I have a perfect summary for Obi-Wan/Padme and an idea, but OTOH I have now written that a lot since January and it was tiring so someone should just write 10k of that for me.)

I continued to feel a bit rubbish generally, but today I feel a bit better. It's probably only just because yesterday was so bad today seems better than it is, or temporary for whatever reason, like eating too many Bournville buttons earlier, always cheering, but anyway, it's nice while it lasts, and you never know. I might not feel flat for a day or so at a time. I have heard it happens.

I am at least at the editing stage of the latest assignment and can maybe write meme flashfic now, who knows? XD (Still hunting a willing victim Ameripicking beta yet again if anyone feels particularly brave/kind.)

1. [profile] swordzsorcery linked to the amazing blog post The Chairs of Blake's 7. It's great. (I don't know why it's so great, either, but it really really is.)

2. New exchange relevant to some people's interests round here, even if obv. too scary for the likes of me (although the fact that you can specify Gothic as a tag is almost tempting. almost): [community profile] multifandomhorrorexchange

3. I posted the two random meme ficlets I did from a little while to AO3 and thanks to their new hits count policies, for a moment there one of them had 2 kudos and 0 hits, which surely has to be an exceptional hits:kudos ratio. XD

[community profile] space_swap is open for sign-ups! (Fic, Art, Vids, Podfic)

And now I can talk again, I can show my ridiculous but awesome crossover tag that I nominated: "Sheev Palpatine (SW Prequels) & Servalan (Blake's 7).

(I may have done several like it, but I feel that one was clearly the best/most terrifying.)

*g*

[community profile] waybackexchange is still open for sign-ups, too, till March 1st while [community profile] hurtcomfortex is still in nominations till Feb 28th.
thisbluespirit: (s&s - sapphire/silver)
1. [community profile] hurtcomfortex will also be running soon, and I so wanted to do that last year. *looks from that to [community profile] waybackexchange with indecision*

2. For those not put off by counting sentences* the annual Three Sentence Ficathon is running again. (Commentfest format)

3. [personal profile] theseatheseatheopensea wrote this beautifully weird and poetic look at Elements 'becoming' - Saltpetre and I love it, and I am sure some of you will too.

Plus, when wrangling this morning I discovered that [profile] elennare had posted a lovely, delicate Flower Fairies piece, The Queen and the Piper, so that was also nice.

3a. Also while wrangling, we had Dracula 2020 tags overflowing into top tag, which is entirely unsurprising, but what was not what I expected was the fact that they were all from The Archers (because apparently the village ghost night was getting real that one time). So I wound up wrangling The Archers instead. /baffled but amused at fandom

4. I will never finish this [community profile] chocolateboxcomm treat, I will die in the attempt, you will find my fannish body by the wayside of AO3. /may be exaggerating /o\

* Look, counting words is fine. Counting sentences is just unreasonable, how does that work? According to my brain. ;-p
thisbluespirit: (b7 - dayna)
* [community profile] waybackexchange, an exchange for fandoms over 10 years old (for fic, podfic, art and vids) is now taking nominations! (I'm in two minds about signing up, because I like a bit of a gap between things, but OTOH, I do have rather a lot of elderly fandoms, and it's great to see vids as an option in a general exchange.)

* [community profile] halfamoon - coming up soon! The annual celebration of female characters running 1st-15th Feb, with a prompt list here for advance warning, and there are usually some other fun bits too.

* plus a Sci-Fi/Fantasy prompt meme (actually a commentfest). Looks like fun!
thisbluespirit: (s&s - silver)
I saw [personal profile] thedevilchicken's letter for Space Swap and they mentioned that they liked Janeway/Coffee, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and ridiculous crossovers and so this happened, even if it took long enough that the exchange had ended before I was done.

Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Kathryn Janeway, Wilhuff Tarkin
Additional Tags: Space Swap 2018, Crossover, Coffee, Crack, Coffee Addiction, Swirly things in space

I've not been keeping up again, largely due to trying to make the most of my British Newspaper Archive subscription before it runs out (this afternoon) and trying to collect some recs for the [community profile] hc_bingo challenge (due tomorrow) - so in a little while I'll be less erratic! (I hope.) Sorry!!

In the meantime, good things going on:

[community profile] genprompt_bingo is open for Round 14 - good fun, and the fills can be all sorts of things (the prompts are gen, the fills don't have to be) and all kinds of fanworks. There are no deadlines (hence me being still in Round 11) and lots of options via cards, with interesting prompts.

Also also [community profile] intoabar is back! It is the ficathon (though art and other things are allowed) where you sign up for a random crossover, min. 500 words. Sign-ups are open till April 15th and it's a lot of fun. (You choose one character to walk into a bar and meet a random character from 1-4 other fandoms of your choice, but see the comm for all the rules etc.) It had been dead, but lo it is back, although running Dreamwidth-only this time.

Now, excuse me, I still haven't got a single rec actually typed up and I have some more family history things to look up...

I am very pleased to be able to announce that the 2018 Doctor Who Minor Characters Ficathon will be taking place after all!

[personal profile] shivver has kindly stepped in to run it for me, so it will be happening at [community profile] who_guestfest, with prompting starting off this very week, and sign-ups open from next weekend! (See the comm for more details.)

For those who are not familiar with it, it is, as you might have guessed, a ficathon where the focus is on guest (or minor) characters from any corners of the Whoniverse (old, new, spin-offs, audios, novels, comics etc. etc.).

A Dreamwidth account is not necessary to take part - even aside from the Open ID option, anon-commenting is on, so anyone can leave prompts or sign-up (although you'll need to remember to include your username from LJ/tumblr/AO3), and just link the mods to your fic on your posting date, and they'll post the link to the comm, and there is an AO3 Collection.
thisbluespirit: (s&s - silver)
[community profile] snowflake_challenge will be happening again, from tomorrow:

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

And [community profile] chocolateboxcomm ("a low pressure, low commitment multifandom gift exchange run on AO3") has just finished taking nominations and is about to start sign-ups tomorrow.

[community profile] iconthat (a low level, fun icon comm) has its latest challenge up.

And [community profile] fandom_stocking is still full of stockings to stuff with small fannish gifts of all kinds, from icons to recs to fic to recipes!

(I'm going to try and remember to make more posts about what's going on, so here's a start to that, or a restart rather.)
thisbluespirit: (dw - amy)
The Doctor Who Minor Characters Ficathon is on again for this year! See below for details and please pimp if you can - there's a banner post with handy coding at the comm. There is also a rebloggable tumblr post for similar pimpage over there.

Also go sign up and prompt if you're a Doctor Who fanficcer! And don't forget you don't need to be taking part to leave prompts - all welcome!

[livejournal.com profile] dw_guestfest is a low pressure ficathon for all minor/guest characters from any corner of the Whoniverse.

Open now for both prompts and sign-ups! (If you're not on LJ, anon commenting is on, and other methods of prompting/signing up etc. are available - check the comm for more info.)

I took part in Remix Redux for the first time this year, so I woke up this morning to find a lovely remix of (unexpectedly) the one Once Upon a Time drabble I'd written (some lovely perilous thing a gift for [profile] ramasi in [community profile] fandom_stocking).

Anyway, it's really lovely and takes a drabble I wouldn't have said had anything more in it, and expands beautifully on the original point. It's great (and not spoilery beyond Belle's first episode in S1):

I was, btw, definitely not signing up for [community profile] unconventionalcourtship myself this time, oh no. I'd only try and write inappropriate Public Eye fanfic for it, if I could even manage anything.

I looked through the summaries (and mostly boggled, and thought WHY? and questioned characters' life choices) and then I wrote most of this in rough by early this afternoon:

78) Between Strangers – Linda Conrad
Rescuing a stranded mother and baby from a raging blizzard hasn’t been part of Frank Marker’s plans. Yet he couldn’t abandon Helen Mortimer. And ended up getting snowed in with her, tasting those fiery kisses. She was all wrong for him, so why did she feel so right in his arms?

Needless to say, there will not be any fiery kisses in my Public Eye fic, even if it is set 20 years pre-canon in the hard winter of 1947 when Our Heroes were 18 and 24 respectively (or thereabouts) and - if you follow Timeline #1 - Helen was, in canon, a single mother with a baby. (Denis Mortimer did marry her, but only four years later when it was convenient for him, of course.) (My working draft summary is something like this: Frank Marker’s trying to sell encyclopedias in the middle of the worst winter of the century, which probably wasn’t the best idea to start with. And now he’s wound up trying to rescue a single mother and her baby who’ve been abandoned at a bus stop, and all he’s got to hand is a car that won’t go, and a dozen copies of the A-Z of Everything... )

Please send help. Things the world does not need: Public Eye fanfiction. I mean, really. Even aside from nobody watching it but me, it works by showing, not telling, and cleverness, and Alfred Burke's face. I have none of those things; I have a Mills & Boon summary and a due date of May 2nd... /o\

Anyway. It's a fun ficathon - you get the prompt on a plate, full freedom to be as unromantic and trope subverting as you like or the reverse, for those who aren't me and will write fiery kisses for characters they ship. (Mind, I think this one might qualify as more romantic than last time when Silver and Steel got stuck in a romance novel, or, to put it more honestly, I cheated outrageously by use of the nature of S&S.)
thisbluespirit: (Northanger reading)
It's like someone made a fic exchange especially for me (and I probably won't even be able to play). But I know lots of you like plenty of YA/children's books, so go here and find out more - and have some fun brainstorming over the nominations!

[profile] hhertzof is planning a children's/YA lit fic exchange, and you can find out more and vote in the name poll here. I think it's probably of interest to quite a few of you - every and any child/YA lit is probably going to be eligible.

(So, yes, Diana Wynne Jones, Chalet School, Enid Blyton, picture books, modern YA epics, time-honoured classics, anything).
thisbluespirit: (Default)
I don't think I really did anything I expected today, mostly because [personal profile] aralias is evil awesome. (Depending, there might be another post that's her fault later or tomorrow, because she is.)

Anyway, first things first: she's set up a panfandom ficathon where you take a Mills & Boon/Harlequin romance summary and use it for your favourite pairing and hilarity ensues (or possibly actually romance if you feel like it). Where can you find this wonderful thing and sign up etc.? It is here: [community profile] unconventionalcourtship

I might have made some banners for it. Some of them are only useful if you are me, but I was having slightly too much fun. There are more banners on the comm for pimping. But you can use any of these if you like them, too. (You can find them all here.) That was what occupied quite a bit of my day.

In other flist news, [personal profile] john_amend_all wrote first Passenger for the Steel/Jet prompt i left in his 500 prompts post (which was unexpected and entertaining and involves Steel, Jet and a motorbike ride in the 1920s) and then Field Repair with Silver and Iodine, which is marvellous and uses one of those settings that are v clever for S&S but I can't tell you before you read it. (Several S&S fics are like that. It's v annoying. You can't rec them properly.)

And a vid, which wasn't made by anyone on my flist, but is lovely:

(The State of Dreaming by niyalune (Clara, DW - so spoilers for Asylum of the Daleks & the Christmas special).

I'm sure there were about ten other things I've meant to share with people, but never mind. (I must go have dinner now.)

ETA: Had dinner and remembered!

1. Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] vila_restal! (Okay, I know, but it makes me happy that I have Vila on my flist. He's quiet now, but rebels sometimes have to go into hiding.)

Also, other stuff happening that is fun/interesting: [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon (ends on the 14th), [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen and [livejournal.com profile] shipswap.

Well, no sooner was [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo over, than [livejournal.com profile] shipswap went live, just to save me getting withdrawal symptoms from interesting 'net activity.

And I have a story! \o/ It's a really lovely and fun Press Gang fic, set S2, with a full complement of Spike/Lynda arguing, Sam/Kenny flirting, Sarah's disastrous love-life, Tiddler - and Colin being more than usually random. What more could a person ask for? (And, yes, I was able to read it. :-D)

The Consequences of Saying No (2557 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Press Gang
Rating: General Audiences

Characters: Lynda Day, Spike Thomson, Sam Black, Sarah Jackson, Kenny Phillips, "Tiddler" Tildesley, Colin Mathews
Summary: The Norbridge High Valentine's Ball has got everyone at the Junior Gazette thinking of other things than the paper.

It's an anonymous exchange, but I do suspect that this was written for me by [livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 - but I'll find that out come reveal. (Possibly I am amusingly wrong, who knows?) ETA: Looks as though I'm amusingly wrong, I see... Ha.

Also, obviously, anonymity means I can't post my fic here yet. I'm a little curious as to whether people will guess which one it is, so I think I'll do the guessing game for the first and possibly the only time and offer up a tiny ficlet or one or two icons to anyone who guesses correctly.)

(Mind, it is a tiny exchange. If everyone guesses, I might take that back.)

Anyway, check out the rest of the collection - it's tiny, but there are some great fics, including two Classic Who stories.

I finally got my [livejournal.com profile] who_like_giants ficathon entry done - just in time! [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 rescued me with a beta when I was at the point of doubting it even made sense, and at last it is posted:

Transience (c.4500 words, Peri, Governor of Varos, Maldak,PG, possibly AU, spoilers for Vengeance on Varos.)

I should also confess that in my efforts to have an appropriate icon (yes, really), I spent more than I like to admit of yesterday, screen-capping Vengeance on Varos and making an insane number of Varos-related icons. (It wasn't really that mad, only I was beginning to get an idea of what I was doing, and so...) You can witness the results HERE. If anyone should actually want one, you're welcome.

Title Field Trip
Author [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating All ages
Word Count 5269
Characters Sixth Doctor, Peri Brown, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright. And half of 1F.
Summary Ian and Barbara encounter an unexpected danger on the school trip. Luckily, the Doctor is there to come to their rescue. In a manner of speaking…

Written for [livejournal.com profile] infiniteviking who requested Ian and Barbara, chaperoning a dozen kids on a school trip, encounter an alien menace and are rescued by Six. Unfortunately, getting out of danger is easier than getting back to civilization. Cue thirty hours trapped on a TARDIS that refuses to go where it's told, during which the Doctor and his increasingly amused companions have to entertain a group of scared ten-year-olds. The sillier, the better! The youngest they could be was eleven and I haven’t counted out the hours, but hopefully this is silly enough to amuse. I know it was 3rd prompt, but once I’d seen it, how could I possibly write anything else?

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 for kindly doing the beta-reading. Any remaining errors are therefore All My Fault.

Someone wrote me a story! The [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen fic from my prompt is up and I am so pleased. Check it out here.

I have to say I was a little worried, because, despite the rubbish I write sometimes, I am picky about stuff and especially about historical things. Like names and words and...

But this tale of Vicki, Steven and the First Doctor and a lot of old-fangled vehicles is just lovely and I'm so glad I asked and got. Historical stories are in short supply and stories with these three even less frequent. Thank you, anonymous good fairy!
