thisbluespirit: (Duchess)
I fell out of posting and managing to keep up for a bit, for various reasons, but anyway, here are some things:

1. [community profile] halfamoon is running again, with prompts every day - it's an annual two-week fannish celebration of female characters etc (1-14th Feb.)

2. [community profile] fic_promptly has started up again, if people want regular commentfest type posts!

3. In Brit Cosy Crimes fandoms, what they give you with one hand, they take away with the other, which is to say that the BBC has brought Shakespeare & Hathaway back from the dead and Sebastian will get to wear more ridiculous costumes, but ITV countered by cancelling McDonald & Dodds, so there will alas be no more improbable crimes in Bath.

4. I don't want to keep linking to Sesskasays's reactions, but she made it unspoiled to Caves of Androzani, really appreciated it and was not ready for the ending, and it was probably the best first time reaction to that one I've seen. (Of course, this now means that she has to contend with The Twin Dilemma, but we all have to go through that sooner or later... ;-p)

5. In things I have been watching and listening to and should write about properly, because they were all good and interesting: - I listened to another J B Priestley Time Play adaptation, I Have Been Here Before.

In a charity shop (one of my reasons for not keeping up was my friend took me to town for the first time since November) I found one of those inexplicable 3 films in 1 DVDs that are usually random things you have never heard of, only this one was Tom Jones (1963), A Passage to India, and An Ideal Husband; and I'd wanted to see Tom Jones - I think I must have found it via Julian Glover being in it, but parts of it were filmed in my home town! But it was quite expensive online secondhand so I'm still impressed with this piece of serendipity. I enjoyed it and I recognised said home town quite clearly. XD (The street they used, Castle Street, is not only where I was born, but, if you have been around long enough to remember me talking about my family history, it was where one of my direct ancestors came to a tragic end in a cesspool. Yes, I am working class, lol.)

Also I have now finished The Jewel in the Crown! It was indeed very good and the last episode suddenly produced unexpected Peter Jeffrey, who wasn't even actually evil as such, for a wonder.

There seem to be lots of things going in February. I'm not sure if I'll be able to join in any as Feb seems likely to not be the best month for being fannish for me, but I've linked to all of them I can remember - maybe some of you will be able to have fun with them.

1. [community profile] small_fandoms drabblethon is running again.

2. Fannish 50 challenge is running again, but by someone else, I think.

3. [community profile] halfamoon, focusing on female characters, runs for the first half of the month and the daily themes are here (though you don't have to use them).

4. [personal profile] corvidology wants people to post about Stuff they Love here

5. And there's febuwhump on tumblr with some fun prompts!

/collapses under the weight of just the links. ;-p
thisbluespirit: (flower fairies)
There are various laid back fests going on right now, for February, or half of it, and I was thinking I might like to try see if I could do something little for one of them in the process of getting well. At least the thought of it is nice! Also I've finished my [community profile] hc_bingo card (\o/) and thought maybe some low-key other one might be good, and so...

[community profile] small_fandoms is hosting a drabblethon (perfect drabbles, for fandoms with under 100 works)

[community profile] halfamoon is running again till Feb 14th, to celebrate women/female-identifying characters in fandom, with daily prompts (but you can post anything to do with female characters in fandom anyway).

Plus, re. the bingo thing - guess what? [community profile] allbingo is having a Valentine's Bingo fest for February and you can generate your own card, and they still have the Language of Flowers set allowed for that, and I did not even try to resist.

(I ended up going for Language of Flowers + Language of Gemstones + Romance Novel Titles because how could I decide between those? Even if a sensible person would have done. You can have mini-cards, and ther are a bunch of non-gem/flower prompts, and since the comm's chief purpose is a place to finish bingos for bingo comms since gone bust and the like, if I wind up coming along three years later with my Feb 2023 card bingo is the comm's raison d'etre anyway, which makes it a nice extra, I think. Here's mine, anyway. I like it!

So, in the middle of all this, I actually wrote another Star Wars fic, this one for [community profile] halfamoon prompt "Legacy", [community profile] allbingo square "Rose Leaf - You May Hope" and [community profile] 100_women prompt "Mother", but I didn't post it here in the interest of not giving myself away with Prequel feels. Not that I imagined anyone would care that much which ChocoBox fic I wrote, but I was so obvious in Remix, I thought I should make the effort at anonymity this time. And you can't pretend to still be casual about SW while writing fic about Obi-Wan Kenobi's mother.

Anyway, there's a canonical tag for her and in the process of writing the other fic, I got curious, and this happened. Because there are different kinds of heroism, really, and I wanted to play with that.

(This isn't based on any actual EU stuff beyond Obi-Wan being apparently taken to the Jedi later than most - Wookieepedia has pretty much nothing on his parents or home planet that's still canon, and very little more even in Legends. He had parents, and his planet had grass. Probably.)

Another belated [community profile] halfamoon entry, this time for Day 9's prompt "Rescuing the Knight"; also for [community profile] allbingo square "Snapdragon - Gracious Lady."

Since I wound up getting tied up by my overlong Chocolate Box treat during most of [community profile] halfamoon, I'm doing some belated catch-up, especially since I intended to double up these with my [community profile] allbingo February table (which is working!) as well as [community profile] 100_women. I wrote two ficlets yesterday, but only one got to posting stage, and I was going to post them both together here, but never mind, here's the first:

(Also for [community profile] 100fandoms and [community profile] 100_women. \o/)

* [community profile] waybackexchange, an exchange for fandoms over 10 years old (for fic, podfic, art and vids) is now taking nominations! (I'm in two minds about signing up, because I like a bit of a gap between things, but OTOH, I do have rather a lot of elderly fandoms, and it's great to see vids as an option in a general exchange.)

* [community profile] halfamoon - coming up soon! The annual celebration of female characters running 1st-15th Feb, with a prompt list here for advance warning, and there are usually some other fun bits too.

* plus a Sci-Fi/Fantasy prompt meme (actually a commentfest). Looks like fun!

A little thing I wrote for [community profile] halfamoon, and also for [community profile] genprompt_bingo and [community profile] 100fandoms. (1 down, 99 to go!)

Halfamoon

thisbluespirit: (spooks - Ruth!)
1. [community profile] halfamoon | [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon is back! A two week celebration of female characters in fandom, from 1-14 Feb.

(Even though I know it's coming, I never prepare, so I'll have to see if I can still do something...)

2. First proper draft of my NYR fic is typed up! Now for [community profile] hetswap... (I have an idea at least, but it does need to be more than a scribbled idea at some point soon; the deadline's the end of the month.)

3. [livejournal.com profile] dw_guestfest will be back soon. I just want to have a breather and get some words down for [community profile] hetswap first before I open it for prompts, but I'll post there presently and try and put together a 2017 schedule for the fest.

5. [community profile] who_allsorts is still a thing! As is [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts! I need to go claim myself a second table, for the theme "Historical." I'm excited. I shouldn't have signed up for ten more things than I needed to, though. (Sliiight exaggeration.)

(I'm not ignoring rl events, it's just... here be fannish distractions if anyone wants them, because we all need such things, whatever they may be. Others will bring the links and do the stuff, I shall just continue to try to get well and try to bring small good things and distractions for the moment. But sometimes you do feel the need to just say that, because WTH, indeed. :-/)

Apart from the things I remembered I forgot anyway...

1. Another thing from the flist: I've been following [personal profile] wrangletangle's posts about AO3 tagging, looking at femslash/female-centric tags during February (via [community profile] halfamoon). Anyway, you might like to look at this post about the Women Being Awesome tag. It's canonical and can be used to filter works helpfully and it can be improved by more people using it (where relevant) and by adding individual "x is awesome" sub-tags. Once they've been used by three users, they're canonical.

So I added quite a few people where it seemed appropriate to me for my fic on AO3. And it does seem to me that if some of you had a moment to do the same, we could quite easily improve matters and make, say, "Leela is awesome" canonical (because she is, anyway). Or Romana, Martha, Liz, Barbara etc. etc. If you're wondering, when the post was made only five women had canonical "awesome" tags and none of them were from DW. You can also see who else I tagged there, too.

But, anyway, I realise I'm strange and like thinking about tags and things and also have the time to do such low-level things at the moment.

2. Not a thing I forgot, but in rl news, I went to see an ex-colleague at the library today about volunteering soon for an hour every fortnight (doing something not too taxing, I'm a great volunteer, ha). So that's good. We'll see how it goes, but it's definitely a Step Forward. \o/ (Also, she said at the end how much she and everyone missed both of us children's librarians now we're not around to spread glitter about the place. ♥) It's also just a tad ironic, really, isn't it? Never mind.

I wrote this for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon last year, but didn't manage to type it up in time. I thought I'd try again this year. (So it's actually one of my earliest S&S fics. Just because someone had to write it.)
