I have made it through all the current appointments! \o/ My boiler has even had its annual service (elusiveness of plumber turned out to be due to having a holiday and injuring himself on said holiday). There will be a whole bunch of new things soon, I'm sure, and I will continue to be erratically up and down with the chronic illness, but that is the nature of the game, but I have at least got some of the annual/bi-annual things done for a bit.

Some small fannish things:

1. New Seasonal Challenge at [community profile] tardis_library (the DW reccing comm I run), which is Character Surprise!

(I get to generate five random DW characters from some set lists (New, Classic, etc), so I like running this one. XD) Anyone can sign up and rec, and absolutely no penalty if you don't, or I would have had to ban myself by now and I'm the mod, so that would be awkward. It's open till June.

2. I have signed up for [community profile] no_true_pair's mini-round in hope! The prompts should be posted tomorrow, but you can sign up till then, and after as long as you don't look at the prompts first.

ExpandMy random characters rather randomly and wildly selected )

I will be very interested to see what the results are! ([community profile] no_true_pair is effectively like the 15 Characters Meme, but less complicated and less characters and you're supposed to actually write the results, so obviously it is a very me-targeted fest and I also think people should join me in it!! XD)
thisbluespirit: (dw - daleks)
So, [community profile] tardis_library is doing it's annual Reccer's Bingo challenge until September, so it really is Bingo Season, as now I have a card for the purposes of reccing Whoniverse works:

Crime & punishment Companion Mind games Stories Gallifrey
Outsider POV Rare Pairing Sharing a bed Fashion Epistolary
Romance Children WILD CARD War & peace Hopes & fears
Quest Locked in/trapped First time/last time Missing Moment Runaways
Spies/secret agents Mystery Master Rift Noodle incident

I've been really bad at reccing lately, but hopefully I can pull myself together enough to manage five over 3 months! (I think it's just mainly been that "The Timeless Children" whatever else it was, was rather a deathblow to DW fandom on Dreamwidth, and that makes reccing seem unfairly pointless, plus the mod is me, so that always feels like it's all fake. That and the 6-8 months I spent not being able to look at any DW things at all, of course, even if that has now passed and I DO have things to rec again, so I should. :-/)
thisbluespirit: (b7 - servalan)
1. I had to default on [community profile] justmarriedexchange, but I noticed this morning that I have a gift already! And guess what? When I did some present-shaking, it turned out someone had seriously gone and written my cracky Servalan/Palpatine prompt! 0_o

I only hope I have the strength needed to read such an amazing and terrifying thing come the end of the month. (It's going to be a long month waiting, but I'm happy to see that my defaulting won't have cost me a gift at any rate. And it's complete enough in draft that I will finish it for the recip at some point anyway.)

2. For anyone looking for fannish distractions, the [community profile] sunshine_challenge has started, which is like the Snowflake Challenge, but in July.

3. [community profile] tardis_library is having its annual Reccer's Bingo if anyone wanted to sign up for a card and join in.
thisbluespirit: (dw - daleks)
I may not be around so much, but everyone else suddenly seems really busy...

* [community profile] intoabar has finally reappeared... in summer when it's no use at all! But it's fun, and I can recommend signing up if you like a fun crossover challenge.

* [community profile] remixrevival has opened for sign-ups! Remix is my one summer thing I do, as it usually works out, and I love Remix too much not to try. I'll wait till nearer the 20th to do it, though, just in case the weather is awkward, and see how I am. (There's such a fascination with trying to pull out something from the bones of someone else's fic to play with, and seeing someone else give your own fic that same attention and pull unexpected things out of it. Sort of terribly navel-gazey, I suppose, but great fun and there's usually some amazing fic.)

* There's a mid-year equivalent of the Snowflake Challenge going on - the [community profile] sunshine_challenge, with a challenge every other day (starting yesterday).

* [community profile] trope_bingo has opened for its latest round, too.

* Plus, [community profile] tardis_library is having a reccing bingo.

1. It's now summer, so please bear with me if I am not able to keep up with my flist. It's the worst time of the year, I suffer from a lot of stress, and, in purely practical terms, my PC time often gets completely halved if it is at all sunny, so if you see me around still making posts or other small things but not commenting (or vice versa), it's just summer, sorry. We'll see how it goes, but everything's just kind of weather permitting from now on.

2. One of the small, cheerful things I hope to still do on occasions is take part in the second [community profile] tardis_library Reccer's Bingo, and here is my card:

Vampires/werewolves/zombies Mind control/possession Kissing/Hugging Work Famous figures
Date Introspection Undercover Backstory Drink/Drugs/Intoxication
Crossover Explosions WILD CARD Original Characters Blue
Spin-off Rainbow Artificial Reality Mundane/domestic Crafts/Crafty
Circles Epic/large scale Master Runaways Special occasion

(There is still oodles of time if anyone still wants to sign up! All you need is to have some Doctor Who fanworks up your sleeve to rec. It was good fun last year and hopefully will be again.)

I posted my Seventh Doctor era manifesto, such as it is, over at [community profile] tardis_library!

Now, excuse me, I have an [community profile] hc_bingo fic I might still have a reasonable chance of finishing tomorrow if I go and do some typing now...
thisbluespirit: (heyer - gothick)
1. I am writing Dracula (TV 1968)/Doctor Who, with Ace meeting the others post-canon for the [community profile] hc_bingo April crossover challenge. This is what happens if nobody gives me prompts and I'm doing a Seventh Era manifesto while making gifs of Dracula. The downsides are that I don't know if I can finish it in time, as I'm not really that great right now, and probably nobody but me would want to read it anyway, so it will probably die in my notepad if I don't. So I will try.

2. I sort of accidentally bought a paid Dreamwidth account the other day while trying to see if it was now possible for me to do so. (It hadn't been before for a lot of UK users). Well, it is now, and I have 100 icon spaces, which I am fast filling up. Journal-space is just so much less fun without icons; everything has perked up now. I am getting all the icons I need for comms and writing purposes while wondering about making original Element icons and also how many Silver and James Maxwell icons a person might be able to get away with. And is there any justification for Mrs Mortimer icons? (I still love her even if I have mostly stopped going on about Public Eye.) Plus, I need to find new icons for new things. And it's more fun to make them when you might be able to use them, even if only for a year.

Anyway, this is what happens if I get really annoyed at not having my Dracula icon any more for the third time in three days.

3. I am working on a Seventh Doctor Era manifesto for [community profile] tardis_library. It's very hard to narrow down the recs! At the moment, I have a good list but it is free of some of my most favourite Seven authors which feels pretty weird and wrong. I have a growing list of things that will need reccing separately on the comm afterwards now. Which is also good, as long as I remember to do it!

(Talking of which can a person justify separate Ace and Seven icons, or should she just have a Seven 'n' Ace one still, or even have all three? But then 100 icon spaces are not unlimited icon spaces especially if you are a multifannish person with multiple comms and also one of those fandoms is Doctor Who and you like all 56 years it and the audios and some of the books...*)

Oh, and [personal profile] ruuger has posted their Twelfth Doctor manifesto for the same challenge, so you should definitely look at that. (Posted on TARDIS Library's first birthday, too! I am thrilled that it has come this far in these fallen days. <3)

3a. I've been planning to do a rec set for the [community profile] genprompt_bingo square "genderswap" as a way of dealing with it (not my trope, and I wanted to do the border bingo) but just as I'm getting on nicely with it (especially after realizing that it also includes Rule 63 fic), I had an idea on how to fill it myself. Self, that is just inconvenient. I've been making this rec set possible for a year now!

* There may be some other advantages to having a paid account, but I'm all about the 100x100 icon spaces.

Still catching up!

Day 5

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Some comms of my own:

[community profile] tardis_library - a Doctor Who reccing comm, made as a successor (but different from) the lovely [community profile] calufrax (now inactive, but with an amazing backlist that is still one of the best ways to get at gems from the Teaspoon Archive) - recs from all corners of the Whoniverse, posted anywhere, and in any media format. I'm so pleased with how this has taken off - more people & more recs are always welcome!

[community profile] historium which I have just set up as a central hub for all history fandoms, whether RPF or fictional to meet, post stuff, or use as a launching pad to set up more specific comms. It's had a great beginning & I need to get back to it once I am a little more recovered.

[community profile] tic_tac_woe or Apocabingo - a panfandom mini bingo challenge (using a tic tac toe 3x3 card) with all apocalyptic prompts! No deadlines, just sign up for a card & then end worlds/countries etc. or save them as you wish. (Fictionally, obviously.)

[community profile] who_allsorts - as an extra, because I meant to only include three, but I've a soft spot for this one. It's another Doctor Who community - an old-school prompt table with claiming, but with bite-sized tables. You can sign up for up to two at once and claims are very flexible (anyone can make the same claim, pairings/characters/eras/themes are all accepted, so you can choose how wide or narrow to make it). I created it with the object of enabling more DW content of all kinds, and I still think the prompt tables are very pretty!

Not-by-me communities:

[community profile] hc_bingo - still my favourite bingo, despite frequently being terrified by the prompts! It's very flexible about interpretation of prompts, and fills can be comfort, or hurt, or hurt/comfort as you please, and any fanworks are eligible. It runs once a year, but there are fun amnesty challenges and you only need to create one fanwork a year to stay eligible for the next round. It's been the perfect excuse to write a lot of things, and I've really enjoyed the Amnesty challenges when I've taken part. (Which are open to anyone if that works for you better than a bingo.)

[community profile] fic_rush - we need to sort ourselves out for another round soon, but this 48 hour actual ficathon (i.e. writing marathon) has been a wonderful supportive & social ingredient of my journalling life ever since I first plucked up the courage to join. There are ninja penguins, alien fish, glowsticks, and writerly pasta and attempts at galactic domination, but you don't have to worry about that. I mean, until and unless the penguins get you...

I enjoy recs and reccing comms, the main two of which I follow here are [community profile] fancake (though I never can get myself together to post for a theme) and [community profile] gensplosion for gen recs (which I have recced for, but am bad at doing), both of which have led me to some excellent fic, and both of which are panfandom.

There are so many comms I like! Here are, quickly, some more:

[community profile] who_at_50 (general DW comm, despite the name)

Bingos - [community profile] ladiesbingo, [community profile] trope_bingo, [community profile] allbingo and [community profile] genprompt_bingo. (Of these I particularly like [community profile] genprompt_bingo (which takes any kind of fills, despite the name, it's just that the prompts are gen prompts) but they're all good in their different ways.)

Icons - [community profile] iconthat, [community profile] icontalking, [community profile] icon_library, [community profile] icons10in20, [community profile] icons & [community profile] fandom_icons. (A mix of challenge and general posting comms.)

Which is probably enough from me, but I still like comms. And that's even before we get to all the exchanges or my other comms I run or co-mod...
thisbluespirit: (dw - seven & ace)
Now up at [community profile] tardis_library! I'll be pimping it about probably tomorrow and/or the weekend in a few relevant places, but a head's up here, too - the reccer's bingo is now closed, and our Autumn challenge is to pick any Whoniverse character and make 5-15 recs (for any fanworks) between now and the 6th Dec.

All the details are here! First come, first served, so nab your favourite character while you can!

(In other news, I am v. tired but beginning to perk back up tonight. *crosses fingers* I made the challenge post on Saturday, because I know how to make things earlier even if I don't have a Blue Peter badge.)
thisbluespirit: (Default)
1. Thank you for all being v nice when I was all hopeless the other day! It helped, and now I at least just feel rotten in the usual way again, so that is okay. :-)

2. [personal profile] swordznsorcery wrote one of my Obscure & British prompts (Blake's 7/Star Wars, Jenna Stannis & Han Solo, so who's the fastest smuggler/pilot this side of the galaxy?) - Never A Dull Minute and it's great!

3. A thing I meant to mention before and forgot, but it has been one of the best things about the last few months: [community profile] tardis_library is (as most of the DW side here know anyway) up and running and working! It has been a lot of fun to have something nice to mod, discover new vids/art/fic via recs and share things and see other people like them. (It is also, btw, by no means too late to sign up for a reccing bingo card, especially if, like me, you often need a push to actually rec things. Or just enjoy the idea, of course.) I hope people will continue to do so. The bingo and monthly themes do seem to help, I think.

Anyway, it exists and people who are not me rec on it. (Btw, [personal profile] eve11, you were in the reccing lead, but I have now beaten you. *waggles eyebrows in deliberate challenge*) So, yay. And thanks very much to everyone who helped promote it originally!
thisbluespirit: (doctor who)
I got myself a reccing bingo card from [community profile] tardis_library (a challenge designed by me for people like me who tend not to post recs without a reason, so I really had to). If you want one, the challenge is open till the end of August and you can find all the details here

Magic Apocalypse Mystery Stories Multi-era
Flora & fauna Games Work Introspection Good & evil
Atonement It’s not what it seems WILD CARD Drunkenness Horror
War & peace Angst Aliens made us do it Rare Pairings Torture
Daleks Supernatural Revenge Remix Missing adventure

1. [community profile] tardis_library seems to be starting off well, so I am pleased! I've nearly finished all my pimping now, you'll be relieved to know (sorry!) - but if anyone who hasn't already and is into Doctor Who or knows a few people who are could still pimp it on their journal or anywhere else that seems appropriate, I'll be very grateful! c+p banner coding here for LJ/Dreamwidth:

With even more thanks to anyone who is kind enough to reblog this tumblr post for it. (The couple of people who have - thank you, it made a big difference. It's just there's no way for me to do the rounds myself there and I am entirely reliant on other people reblogging, so any help there is marvellous. thank you thank you.)

2. I don't know if it's a new Freeview channel, or just one that my TV Guide has deigned to cover now or what, but there's a channel full of very old films called Talking Pictures, which has just provided me with some more Margaret Lockwood in the shape of Hungry Hill (1947), an adaptation of a Daphne du Maurier book (from the days when Daphne du Maurier was still around to help with the scripting). I'm now nearly through it, and some more Margaret Lockwood being headstrong in big frocks has been very welcome!

Tomorrow, I see that it will be showing The Wicked Lady (and no doubt some other days this week), so, if you are also in the UK and want to see Margaret Lockwood and James Mason galloping about being highwaymen you should watch. It is not quite as fab as The Lady Vanishes obv. but it is excellent OTT melodrama with cross-dressing and villainy and shenanigans and also the lovely Patricia Roc. (Plus it's clearly the inspiration for a lot of the DW ep "The Woman Who Lived" too. Watching them close together is quite the experience.)

Via tumblr, some pics of Margaret Lockwood in Hungry Hill, big frocks v much included.

(And Drama are also starting showing Juliet Bravo from tomorrow (an early 1980s series about a female police officer policing Up North (but not pretty like All Creatures)). I like having my terrible elderly-TV/film watching habits enabled like this. I don't remember the early series(es) so well as the later ones with Anna Carteret, but I think Chris Boucher was script editor for 1 or 2 or the early ones, so naturally, I'm interested, especially in any eps he wrote for it. (I'll check IMBD).)
thisbluespirit: (Default)
It is now a thing that is a thing! We shall see how this goes...

If you're willing to pimp it anywhere, here's the coding for the banner:

Plus, a rebloggable tumblr post here (and I'll be very grateful for any reblogs there in particular).
