An icon batch I was waiting to post until I'd done the latest [community profile] retro_icontest challenge, and then nearly forgot about! Most of these have probably been posted here before, although not the [community profile] retro_icontest The7Days challenge to icon seven different angles from the last seven things you watched. The angles were above, below, left, right, back, front, artist's choice. Plus, all the icons I made recently to complete [community profile] 100fandomicons and [community profile] retro_icontest's Island Rumble round, making icons from the same two screencaps & some alts.

I started this on 27th Feb 2021 for [community profile] 100fandomicons and have finally completed it, after taking longer than anybody else ever has, which I suppose is one claim to fame. (You can see the fandoms if you hover over the icons.)

I've been feeling rotten post-Covid Jab #2 for the past few days, so generated myself some very random summaries to share in order to cheer myself (and other people):

So, I continue to feel rotten, even though the weather is giving me a break but hey. ANYWAY, to turn to something more cheerful than weather, illness, and certainly than current news, [personal profile] liadt is running the [community profile] unconventionalcourtship fest again this summer! Sign-ups open now!

[community profile] unconventionalcourtship is the ficathon where you take a Mills & Book/Harlequin/Avon type book blurb and then kill it with fanfic use it as inspiration for a fic, as shippy or not, or cracky or serious or not as you please.

It's an old school fest, so you just choose a prompt and sign up for a posting day some time in August and there you are. \o/

Anyway, I doubt I can do it (see above), but in addition to pointing you to it, I have generated some random summaries from the Unconventional Courtship Generator in case anyone is short of ideas. I'm sure these would make great crack fic. XD (On more sensible note, you can also customise it for your own fandoms, too, if you want help with inspiration.)

Dear [community profile] justmarriedexchange creator,

Thank you for signing up to make something for me!

My letters tend to be on the long side, so tl;dr: I love all kinds of things, I love these fandoms/pairings and adore cracky marriage tropes, so as long as you avoid my DNWs, I'll love whatever you come up with. I've mostly included freeforms that should work as prompts, so I haven't added much more explanation, unless it seemed to need it. All other details are intended for inspiration, not to restrict your choices. Take what's useful and leave what isn't, and I hope you have fun.

That said, here is the long version...

General )

I'm on AO3 under the same name - [archiveofourown.org profile] thisbluespirit.

My requests are all for fic, but I am very much open to art treats if anyone felt kind enough to make me anything.

My now-regular Thursday feature! (We'll see how long this lasts. ;-p)

1. For some reason I'd been feeling a bit down the last couple of days, but you know what is always at least a little bit cheering at such moments? Multi-era Doctor Who fanvids. I was cheering myself with Marching On by xxdrosexx and then wondering why I didn't have any yet that went up to Twelve, so I went looking, and found this, which is also great:

Cut for embed )

Because Doctor Who is, after all, that great big improbable and ridiculous thing of joy and monsters. :-)

And I'm continuing to enjoy watching (or reading) from the sidelines as the Public Call fics get revealed, so here's two more good ones:

2. A Taste of Home by dbskyler (G, 1784 words. Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan.) Sarah, the Doctor, and home. Lovely glimpse of some 'missing scenes' from Terror of the Zygons.

3. Side Quest by annariel (G, 6388 words. Harry Sullivan, Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith.) Harry is collecting equipment for the Doctor when he runs into an adventure of his own. Can he foil the evil Dr. Richards, while at the same time helping the Doctor and Sarah fend off an alien invasion they somehow never quite have the time to explain properly to him? Excellent missing adventure, with Harry getting to prove his worth.

4. The Terrible Doom That Came To Honeysuckle Cottage by Psychomachia (Teen, 2592 words.) There's a saying old says that love is blind
Still we're often told, seek and ye shall find
So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind.
One of the best and funniest fics to come out of last year's Yuletide: the Cthulhu Mythos meets P.G. Wodehouse's Honeysuckle cottage. (Definitely a don't-need-to-know-canon fic.)

5. By Wise Council You Shall Make Your War by beer_good_foamy (Teen, 722 words. Edmund Blackadder, George Colthurst St. Barleigh, Baldrick, Bob. Crossover with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.) In each generation, a Slayer is born. She alone will stand against the etc etc. In 1917, that was a young woman named... um... Bob? Good thing the Watcher's Council have an auxiliary member already in place in the trenches. What it says, oh yes, oh yes. :-D

I'm going to do the [community profile] snowflake_challenge! (This is great because last year this time, I was much too unwell. \o/) However, since my last proper post was about Yuletide Reveal and therefore four obscure fics by me, I thought it seemed much nicer and more sensible to swap Days 1 and 2 around, but I shall do 1 tomorrow. (The rules are very laid back, so I feel sure that'll be okay.)

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

And, actually, I do - or I certainly used to do - a lot of reccing, and mostly in obscure fandoms, so stuff that this once. Here are three different things and while lots of people will know about them already, there's always someone who doesn't and is missing out:

1. The Cake!fic series (All Cake and No Clothes)

Once upon a time (or so the tale goes), in the DW forum called Death by Aspirin, [personal profile] clocketpatch made an innocent typo. Before you could blink, there were multiple resulting fics involving Ten, naked (but for Three's cloak), chained to Three and covered in cake, all due to the plotting of the Master.

So, even though I own this series (on Teaspoon, did you know, you can create a series and then put anybody's fics in it you like? It's brilliant. Just think of the chaos/annoyance/inappropriate collections you could cause. Er. Don't actually do that, though...) it in fact contains a varied assortment of hilarious and wonderful fics on the same premise written by some of my very favourite DW authors. You'll find very little smut - it's amazing, isn't it? However, you will find Ten, naked, chained to Three, covered in cake. You will also find a giant lobster, poetry, multiple Masters, the Rani, UNIT, dark!cake!fic, and the New Who Doctors continually robbing Three for spare parts.

What's more, if you feel inspired, you could write your own version. (Any fic even remotely resembling the prompt is fine and I know people were thinking of branching out into other Doctors and Masters and maybe even as yet untried cake flavours...)

2. [personal profile] sallymn's icons. So pretty and funny, basically. If you like icons and haven't yet rifled through her helpfully categorised collection here, then you really should. Main fandoms are: Blake's 7, Primeval, Doctor Who, The Sentinel, LOTR, Criminal Minds, SG1, Magnificent 7, White Collar, Top Gear & Farscape, but there's quite a few non-fannish writing/reading themed icons, or amusing/pretty ones and some extra random fandom icons. (If I ever had enough icon spaces, I would have all the B7 icons by her that I could. And I swear I got into Primeval mostly for the icons.)

3. I've recently been watching a lot of [personal profile] such_heights's fanvids. I think most people will probably know these, but they're gorgeous. The reason I picked on them just now is that they're not only very well done, but each seems to convey a lot of love for the source(s) used and that makes me happy. Enough To Go By (DW, Amy Pond S5-6) and Can't Go Back Now (BtVS, Willow S1-4) I've been rewatching a lot especially, but they all seem to be lovely.

(I think I managed to sneakily get as many recs as I could into three there, didn't I?)

[livejournal.com profile] shipswap had its author reveal today (or last night), so I can finally post this here.

Maybe Monday, Maybe Someday (3772 words) by faviconlost_spook
Fandom: Angel: the Series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Faith Lehane/Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
Characters: Faith Lehane, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
Summary: Faith and Wesley find themselves temporarily in a different dimension...

With many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dbskyler for the extremely helpful combined beta, US-pick and moral support. (And I'm sorry - one or two bits I corrected. And then uncorrected because it sounded wrong in the character voice. And recorrected. And uncorrected... Basically, any mistakes and remaining/extra Britishicisms are my fault.)

Also thanks again to [livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 who wrote my lovely gift fic. And then left a comment on it to fool me because apparently she's also devious and cunning as well as a nifty writer of Press Gang.

Also, talking of fic exchanges and suchlike, scary but true: [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, the rare fanfic exchange, is having its nominations brainstorming post. Oh my. Yuletide already?!

In other news: today I rescued a bee. (The bee seemed fine, but I am still a bit shaky.) :-)

So there's not much going on, and I couldn't resist retrying the meme using last names. Some couples stayed together despite the odds: Evie Eliott & Eowyn, Frobisher & Gandalf, Maddy & Maid Marian, and Servalan & Seven. The results were mostly much scarier than last time, but it did throw up some things that were amusing - and one or two I want badly now:

More mayhem and scary pairings )
thisbluespirit: (be - laura/brittas (eek))
Meme found in the wild: Make a list of all the characters in your icons. (Although you may have more than one icon of a single character, they only go on the list once.) Alphabetize it. Take the first two people on the list; that's your first pairing. Second two people; second pairing, etc. Treat us to some commentary once you're done.

I thought it'd be fun... I hadn't quite realised what a weird jumble of characters I have - some of them are there more for the action in the icon than the character. So, in most cases, let's say that instead of a commentary, a horrified silence might be more appropriate?

(Actually, it turned out better than I expected. For the first half of the alphabet, anyway.)

I had nothing particular lined up for today's 'naart', so took up the (probably not-at-all-serious) requests/suggestions my flisters helpfully made for things that should have sparkly icons. (And don't worry; I do realise that none of the suggestions was made in an 'I want to use that icon' sense!)

For [livejournal.com profile] pitry, who thought Spike should be sparkly (under a cut for mild language - it is Spike we're talking about here:
Ironic Sparkly Spike )

For [livejournal.com profile] belantana, who wanted Sparkly Spooks. (And I'm sorry; I was tired when I made these and it shows, but they were a joke really!) I only have caps from 2.05 (and some somewhere from 2.06), but sparkly action! spooks, happy sparkly spooks, and sparkly Ruth:

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

And [livejournal.com profile] justice_turtle's suggestion (not particularly sparkle-related, but I put some in anyway) that I do a Silver icon with a Star Trek quote about Q. (And I am just sorry that as it turned out, I had no suitable cap of him with that tambourine to make it funnier!):

Photobucket

And, actually, barring maybe doing some more textures, I'm not sure what to do for the remaining 9 or so days - does anyone have any more suggestions/requests? (I know I'm hardly the world's best icon-maker, but even so, any ideas/requests, or provide me with a cap and I'll see if I can fit it into the remainder of [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo. Or just give me a fandom/character and a prompt/quote to challenge me.

It has taken me 22 days to run out of ideas, but I think I just about have, so I'd actually be grateful. Shoot - no guarantees I'll make the icon, or that you'll like it, but I'll try my best!
thisbluespirit: (angel)
Aha, another awesome female. Well, I think she is. I know some people on my flist can't stand her, but this is my list and she's quite high up on it. (Not that there really is a ranking before you ask, except that No. 1 is a certain person I haven't done yet. It won't take a genius to work out which female character I might mean.)

And I'm still catching up.

Day 12 - An episode you've watched more than 5 times:

Well, if I like things, I do tend to rewatch them a scary amount. However, if I think about one episode of something in proportion to how much I've watched the rest of the series, then Buffy's musical episode 'Once More With Feeling' probably wins. I don't think that needs any explaining, does it?

Day 13 - Favorite childhood show:

Oh, my, this is going to be a long post. Both for honorable mentions and for the extent of the love I still have for the show in question and the rambling reminiscences it brings in its wake. (No, it’s not Doctor Who. When I was small I was too busy sticking my head under a cushion and begging my parents to turn it off because of the scary music, so I missed that.) I have pics and vids, though.

Title:On the Highway
Author:[livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5850
Characters: Fourth Doctor, Leela, Duchess of Avon (Leonie Alastair), Lord Rupert Alastair, Kerr Avon, Rupert Giles, Duke of Avon (Justin Alastair), K9.

In which the universe hits upon a million to one chance and the Duchess of Avon has an accident to her carriage. With highwaymen, Leonie not being fond of people call themselves Avon, the Doctor and the Duke of Avon vying for omniscience and Giles still managing to get bashed over the head.

This is the reason [livejournal.com profile] dbskyler still hasn't got that crossover story yet & I was a bit preoccupied yesterday. I posted a drabble on [livejournal.com profile] dw100 that involved Four and Leela running into Leonie, Rupert Alastair and the Duke of Avon (from Georgette Heyer's These Old Shades. [livejournal.com profile] infiniteviking read it as Avon (from Blake's 7) and Rupert Giles. All in 18th C England. Naturally, talk of crossovers ensued. But I kept the Heyer characters in, because it was much more fun that way. I'm not sure what the point was, but, er... (Well, I would have had one, but my Blake's 7 watching is still limited to mostly some chopped up episodes from S1, plus now 2 uncut episodes and 2 more uncut from S2, so I can't really claim to know where that Avon is coming from or going to yet. And it would have been easier - and had a better bit for Justin - if I hadn't discovered that I gave away my copy of These Old Shades. I had to use the sequel to get the voices right. What was I thinking?)

***

Talking of which, and I cut this as it's mainly for [livejournal.com profile] velvetfascism, if she's around. Yes, you made me watch Blake's 7 )
