thisbluespirit: (Becoming Elizabeth)
I knew when I posted the other day that I was forgetting something, and I was!

Anyway, while I was not really up to talking to people over the weekend, I worked on adding a lot more tables to [community profile] 20icontables and it's now ready to go!

[community profile] 20icontables is a new icon community with no deadlines, claims or voting. Simply choose any of our 20 prompt tables and use it to inspire you to make icons! All levels of iconmakers and types of icons welcome.

For further details, see the comm's sticky post: https://20icontables.dreamwidth.org/617.html

Anyway, fingers crossed, and let's hope that people find it a useful resource and I thought hopefully it might also be nice for people who might be a bit deterred by more structured challenges, too. Anyway, as long as somebody else finds it inspiring, that's all that matters.

(Now I just need to put my icon making head back on again, because I still can't seem to stop myself dropping in and out of it in a very unhelpful way. But look! Not only do I have a timed & tricky challenge for [community profile] retro_icontest to give me the much-needed shove, now I can have ongoing tables without a deadline, lol. I just have to choose...)
thisbluespirit: (s&s - silver/steel)
New comm! [community profile] 51pluscrossoverfandoms Prompt table to write 50 crossovers; see comm for the specific rules.

[community profile] yuletide is on its way! Posts have gone up (including the official schedule at [community profile] yuletide_admin). I'll have to decide what to nominate/request/offer soon. I am all undecided, except it will definitely include Shadow of the Tower again. I actually got a ficlet last year, so I take that as encouragement. :-D

I did do some small things in the summer - I made some more Elements posts over at tumblr (Fermium, Aluminium, Iridium, Amethyst & Bismuth). [personal profile] sovay prompted me the first and I used a combination of [personal profile] john_amend_all's generator and my list of fic for Original Elements to do ones for Elements that have been written for. Well, unless I just got inspired. (I don't think anyone's written Amethyst yet.) I am very happy to take more suggestions! They're very satisfying and soothing and yet imaginative to do on bad days.

As I shared here, I made various Dracula gifs, and have started another gifset series entitled (cunningly) Dracula adaptations watched so far. (There are more gifs for each of the three I've done, just click on the tags and hopefully tumblr will not have obliterated them and you will be correspondingly drowned in obscure Dracula gifs. You're welcome.)

(I think I may be watching all the Draculas? I don't know how this will work out. I have most recently watched Bram Stoker's Dracula (aka Bram Stoker's Dracula but what if we gave Dracula the Mummy's backstory) of which more anon (I hope) but generally I found it pretty lolsome and spent most of the first half feeling that what I was really watching was some kind of random expanded version of the Literal Total Eclipse of the Heart video.)
thisbluespirit: (heyer - gothick)
1. I am writing Dracula (TV 1968)/Doctor Who, with Ace meeting the others post-canon for the [community profile] hc_bingo April crossover challenge. This is what happens if nobody gives me prompts and I'm doing a Seventh Era manifesto while making gifs of Dracula. The downsides are that I don't know if I can finish it in time, as I'm not really that great right now, and probably nobody but me would want to read it anyway, so it will probably die in my notepad if I don't. So I will try.

2. I sort of accidentally bought a paid Dreamwidth account the other day while trying to see if it was now possible for me to do so. (It hadn't been before for a lot of UK users). Well, it is now, and I have 100 icon spaces, which I am fast filling up. Journal-space is just so much less fun without icons; everything has perked up now. I am getting all the icons I need for comms and writing purposes while wondering about making original Element icons and also how many Silver and James Maxwell icons a person might be able to get away with. And is there any justification for Mrs Mortimer icons? (I still love her even if I have mostly stopped going on about Public Eye.) Plus, I need to find new icons for new things. And it's more fun to make them when you might be able to use them, even if only for a year.

Anyway, this is what happens if I get really annoyed at not having my Dracula icon any more for the third time in three days.

3. I am working on a Seventh Doctor Era manifesto for [community profile] tardis_library. It's very hard to narrow down the recs! At the moment, I have a good list but it is free of some of my most favourite Seven authors which feels pretty weird and wrong. I have a growing list of things that will need reccing separately on the comm afterwards now. Which is also good, as long as I remember to do it!

(Talking of which can a person justify separate Ace and Seven icons, or should she just have a Seven 'n' Ace one still, or even have all three? But then 100 icon spaces are not unlimited icon spaces especially if you are a multifannish person with multiple comms and also one of those fandoms is Doctor Who and you like all 56 years it and the audios and some of the books...*)

Oh, and [personal profile] ruuger has posted their Twelfth Doctor manifesto for the same challenge, so you should definitely look at that. (Posted on TARDIS Library's first birthday, too! I am thrilled that it has come this far in these fallen days. <3)

3a. I've been planning to do a rec set for the [community profile] genprompt_bingo square "genderswap" as a way of dealing with it (not my trope, and I wanted to do the border bingo) but just as I'm getting on nicely with it (especially after realizing that it also includes Rule 63 fic), I had an idea on how to fill it myself. Self, that is just inconvenient. I've been making this rec set possible for a year now!

* There may be some other advantages to having a paid account, but I'm all about the 100x100 icon spaces.
thisbluespirit: (writing)
My flist is still busy as a busy thing! I'm still not always terribly good at keeping up!

But here are some things going on that look good to me:

* [community profile] 100fandoms has opened on Dreamwidth (formerly long inactive LJ comm) - copy the table of 100 prompts, write a new fandom for each. (More details on the comm but it's pretty fun and laid back. As a multifannish sort, expect to see me posting the table any time soon. When can I resist these things? It'll be easy to combine with bingos & get me writing some of those 500 Prompts, right?)

* There's a new fandom meta newsletter started at [community profile] thisweekmeta.

* And [personal profile] corvidology is suggesting a "Stuff I Love" posting meme for February, which sounds like a good thing to me.

Also, for those into all things Holmesian, there is now [community profile] sherlockkinkmeme.

ETA: Oh, and, very importantly, [community profile] who_contest is also relaunching on Dreamwidth!
thisbluespirit: (spooks - Ruth!)
Re. the name change - nothing is wrong and the only drama was my accidental deletion! Apologies if I alarmed anyone. I didn't exactly plan to do either when I woke up this morning, but it fell out that way.

I came up with my user name a long time ago when Spooks was only at S5, and not finished 8 years ago (!) to use on a Spooks forum as a Ruth Evershed reference. All the obvious Ruth-related names were taken and she was missing at that point, so lost_spook. It's just that 'spook' is also a racial slur in some places (which obviously I didn't know back then, but it's why the show was MI5 in the US), so someone gave me a rename token to fix it, and now I have.

It's a bit weird to say goodbye to it, because it's been me in most places for over 10 years now, but, as you can see from above, it was never carefully chosen, it was just nicely oblique for a general fannish name.

What I didn't mean to do was delete my tumblr, but on reflection, I'm not sad about that either. I'll probably make a new one next week or some time to salvage some of my lost posts via people's reblogs, but there was very little there to mind losing, and it feels oddly better to have it gone, and if I do start another one, it'll be easier.

[personal profile] thisbluespirit is also nothing profound, though - I played around in my head with things I like + variations on 'spook' - and hopefully it will not have any such unpleasant associations for anyone.

(I also feel sure [personal profile] thisbluespirit must be cooler than lost_spook, but that, I fear, can only be delusion, as I am very much still me and, alas, Uncool. ;-D)

I still love Ruth Evershed to pieces, though. (Nicola Walker is amazing in anything, of course, but Ruth is how she won my heart forever and other characters cannot compete. Also Ruth is many many things, but not cool. I love her. Did I mention that already?)

Nowhere in the country is safe from her )
thisbluespirit: (margaret lockwood)
As I said, there's suddenly a lot of activity round here, with new comms born every minute, it seems. Here are some things I've spotted that seem potentially cool and relevant to people's interests:

* [personal profile] snickfic's friending meme is huge, and still very much ongoing.

* [community profile] meta_warehouse - for sharing fannish meta.

* [community profile] 100prompts - prompt tables (no specific pairing/fandom/character claims needed) in tables of 30 and 50, plus daily word prompts, and Friday challenges.

* [community profile] historium - a general comm & hub for all history fandoms (RPF and fictional). I've yet to promote it, but I've finished all the initial tweaking now & will do so presently. (Your mods are me and [personal profile] auroracloud and I'd be very happy if anyone else wanted to join us.)

* [personal profile] clachnaben is hosting a Magical Realism Commentfest - You know the drill, multifandom, also rec posting welcome.

(Looking at this, I realise my definition of magical realism is way narrower than theirs; I always had it pegged as like David Almond (Skellig etc) and Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions, Framed) where it either it's not quite magic or it isn't but the real world has a magical effect in itself. I was a children's librarian and they are the only magical realism people I've read. At least, according to my maybe weird definition. But it seems to be more just magic in the real world? Which is an easier definition than "like these two Brit YA authors and I'll know it when I see it...")

(If you're interested in knowing about these sorts of things then the places to follow are chiefly [community profile] fandomcalendar, [site community profile] dw_community_promo and [community profile] fandom_on_dw.)

(This still isn't an introductory post. ;-p)
thisbluespirit: (pg - lynda)
So, when I switched primarily to Dreamwidth last year following the introduction of the new TOS, my plan was to stop cross-posting when my paid account ran out. That was six months ago. I've been reluctant to take the last step, because I think I'll inevitably lose some people. (I'll still be looking at the couple of LJ-only people I still follow and comment on the same, though, so no need to worry about that.)

Anyway, it's ridiculous: I'm not cross-posting any more filtered personal content to a site that gives me no rights over it (even tumblr assures me that my content is my own), even aside from the unpleasant anti-LGBTQ+ stance embedded in the new TOS. For a site like LJ, though, the content thing is a dealbreaker. (Deal broken, LJ. You broke it, not me. ;-p)

I tried to set up an LJ feed for people if they wanted it so they can still read here and comment there, as now, but I can't seem to. I think I need a paid account? (If anyone knows how to do it, if you pm me the link either side I'll edit it into the post).

ETA: https://lost-spook-dw.livejournal.com/

Thanks, [personal profile] eve_n_furter!

ETA2: Of course, this only shows public entries, not private & commenting there would be pointless. (Click through to the entry proper to comment as usual.)

Comments disabled as no one will get anything good out of another round of Dreamwidth vs LJ. We all have different preferences and last straws and all that. I just need to bite the bullet, make this post, and stop at last and I'm really sorry if that inconveniences anyone, but I already waited longer than I should have done.
thisbluespirit: (Default)
I picked this up somewhere and thought it might be fun to do an old-style meme (although I think this was probably designed as a tumblr ask thing, but hey: there are still no meme police!) and have a reason to talk about fannish things, which is, after all, why I'm here.

(I did the first four together, because they're quite similar and predictable answers are predictable.)

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?

Doctor Who! I first watched it in 1988 (last ten minutes of The Happiness Patrol, my mind was both deepened and boggled and love for Seven was instantaneous), I bought Doctor Who Magazine from about 91 or 92, I thought up fanfic in my head, and then in 1995 I went to university and there they had the internet and newsnet and I discovered rec.arts.drwho, and, more importantly, alt.drwho.creative, and though I had a big internet/fandom gap again afterwards, that was it, really. I came back to finish a historical fic with Four, Sarah, and Harry I'd started in 1998 before the Internet famine, but having returned to post it in 2007, I discovered the Teaspoon and LJ, and I was in love, basically.

2. What is your latest fandom?

A difficult question. In the sense this meme probably means, as in a fandom where I'm really involved in lots of things, probably still Doctor Who, but I like writing for anything that takes my fancy. It usually is old TV things that I've been watching, but I can't seem to help that. (I think it takes the pressure off to write for things where you're not writing something ten other people have already done, which just seems pointless).

But it is lonely and I should probably try harder at modern fandoms; it just never seems to work out. I'm too far behind when I watch them, or I can't ship just one thing and everybody else is all lined up in shipping teams on tumblr, writing fluff.

The last new thing I wrote for is When the Boat Comes In, but I don't think I'd say I was in the fandom, even if there was one. I just wanted to write a thing, and so I did.

3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?

Doctor Who, but I have also had a lot of fun in Blake's 7 and Sapphire and Steel. Most of my other fandoms are either too small or too big to work like that and so I'm not properly in them.

It also doesn't help that I can't really tumblr properly. I have a tumblr and I have fun there sometimes and have met a handful of very nice people, and it does some things very well, but I really preferred the varying levels of choice and filtering journalling and comms gave me, compared to newsgroups, forums, chatrooms, and now tumblr, which despite some filtering here and there are rather all-or-nothing in terms of public or private, which I've always found off-putting.

4. Do you regret getting involved in any fandoms?

Since, in my case, this mostly means "I wrote a thing for it one time", then, no, I don't. And of the fandoms I've properly been in, that's mainly the three above and I certainly couldn't regret being in them, not even the worst corners of DW fandom that I've spent 20 years hiding from. I've made friends, read and written fic, and learned new things from them all.

Full list of questions under the cut )
thisbluespirit: (spooks - Ruth!)
(And then hopefully no more! It takes quite a while to fiddle about and pack up stuff, and spoons too. Also rl was a little busier at the same time.)

1. I have been moving my communities! Some of these are still waiting on import, for various reasons (also the queue is still very long; it's definitely a mass back-up/exodus this time) and so have nothing on them yet, and some of them are more for archival purposes, but most are active or would happily be again, and certainly this mod is around for questions/tagging etc. if anyone else posts:

I moved [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts over here in January, and it is all shiny and ready at [community profile] who_allsorts. I won't close the other, but feel free to switch your claim over (or drop your claim and start a new one at Dreamwidth, I won't tell). Also I probably will only add new tables on this side now.

[livejournal.com profile] dw_straybunnies is now fully imported at [community profile] who_straybunnies! (It hasn't been active for a while, but as long as I'm still here, I'll be fine with people posting to it - it is/was a community for donating Doctor Who fanwork ideas (plotbunnies, if you'll forgive the tweeness, but it makes for a handy name) plus regular discussion of plot ideas we'd like to see and occasional challenges to fill some of the donated prompts.)

[livejournal.com profile] dw_guestfest is created now at [community profile] who_guestfest, but I won't import it until this weekend is over, as someone's still trying to write a last fic for this year's fest. Obviously, the ficathon is over for this year, so nothing will be happening there until it runs again.

[livejournal.com profile] house_of_eliott is now in progress to [community profile] house_of_eliott, hopefully before the LJ version entirely crumbles off a cliff. It's very tiny, but it's a general House of Eliott comm. (This is the only one I will be deleting, because it's so very tiny and crumbling and my co-mod has deleted their account, so it's on virtual point of collapse.)

[livejournal.com profile] cakefic is not yet in progress (but will be as soon as HoE finishes) and you'll find it at [community profile] cakefic. It's not exactly very active, I know, but I do mean to finally run a cakeficathon one day (and heaven forfend that cake fic should be lost)! ([personal profile] clocketpatch, shall I make you co-mod again?)

I am also co-mod of [livejournal.com profile] b7friday, which [personal profile] vilakins has imported to [community profile] b7friday and I hope to see if it's possible to revive it over there, as I think quite a lot of the B7 crew are more Dreamwidth based, such as there is in journal-land anyway). [personal profile] vilakins also imported [community profile] b7fic, and already runs [community profile] blakes7 (and foolishly just made me co-mod of both, which is new. Soon, I shall be supreme commander of the Federation and have all the best dresses!)

And I think I really am going to launch Apocabingo soon at [community profile] tic_tac_woe, but more about that anon!

Please feel free to join any of them you like, even the ones that are still slightly works in progress. I do mean to pimp [community profile] who_allsorts and [community profile] b7friday a bit, and of course [community profile] tic_tac_woe once I've firmed up the rules, and we'll see how it goes with the rest.

And, wow, no wonder that's been taking it out of me. *collapses* (Also, if you are not so much on Dreamwidth, or even if you are, and are feeling a little concerned about imported content, claiming your open ID is super-easy and seems to work like magic on assigning those posts and comments to your actual Dreamwidth account (providing you have one, of course) and then that allows you to edit/delete them as with the original.)

2. Also, in order to get me over the transition bump among other things, I've decided to turn off commenting on my crossposts for the next two months (at least). I've been trying to make sure I've granted access to everybody I can think first so you'll still be able to see and comment on flocked entries, but spotting who I've missed is rather like that game where you have a tray of objects and then take one or two away - and I was always rubbish at that game! So if I haven't yet, just point me in your direction at Dreamwidth. I am a terrible turncoat, I know, but I feel very happy about it! I hadn't realised how much worrying about LJ apocalypses was getting me down.

(tl;dr after this entry, you will have to click through on the link to comment, but I have faith in your ability to cope with slight extra clickiness, even if you judge me for it. ;-p)
thisbluespirit: (spooks - Ruth!)
A few more bits and pieces before I get back to nicer things (and what a week, everyone, :-/), like those ficlets I owe people:

1. Judging by some of the comments I think I wasn't clear in my last post (as ever), here's the thing: I had a think and changed my mind about everything ever and so am going to be mainly based on Dreamwidth from now on because a) enough has happened to make me feel uncomfortable about supporting LJ by giving them any more money (at the very least) and b) the only way to deal with the stress/upset induced by regular LJ apocalypses is to lose it on my own terms and in the most positive way possible - by putting something in its place. I think not something better than LJ as-it-was, because those times have gone, but, feeling like a person who has finally woken up, I hope maybe better than LJ as-it-is now, and that would be something. Why not be quixotically optimistic, I suppose?

But I'm still cross-posting and keeping any commitments I've made, and if I do anything drastic, it would only be to switch off commenting this side to try and break the habit, and nothing more yet (or not without very good reason; I reserve the right to change my mind as often as I need). (Turns out that when it comes to going down with the ship, I want the ship to be fully worth it, and I'm not all that keen on drowning after all.) It will take some work, because the only way to make a proper network is investing in some of the active comms and things like that, though, and that will no doubt swallow many of my online spoons (there's a weird metaphor), so I will no doubt be a little quieter LJ-side as a result, but I've no intention of losing touch with people.

If I don't have you over here already, then please do friend me, or tell me where to find you. I'm aware I was kind of putting my head in the sand all the last few times we went through this, so I probably have still missed out some people.

2. Picked from multiple people in the scuffle, and this is nifty even if you only use your Dreamwidth account occasionally - you can claim your open ID (if you want) and then it magically connects up any of your imported comments on your own or other journals with your actual account. (It was no trouble to do, so I thought I'd pass that on.)

3. I don't know what I'll do in May - Apocabingo or O&B or what. We'll see how the world, online and offline is, or maybe my b'day plans will involve collapsing somewhere and being quiet, online at least. (Offline, my two actual rl bffs are coming to see me at the same time, or they should be. *crosses everything*)

4. Last but certainly not least, I was flipping through my bookmarks for vids this morning, and was reminded of this and it feels like a very good vid for this week. It's my favourite Babylon 5 vid I've seen, so let's end with a positive:

All Is Not Lost (follow the links to watch via download. It's worth it, I promise. I'm pretty sure I've recced it before, but a good thing is always worth as many more recs as it needs.)
(ETA: Alas, it seems the links have broken!)

(Hopefully, as of next post, normal babbling and fannish service will be resumed!)
