I was thinking I probably had done 2 or 3 rainbowfic entries since the last time I linked to any here, and then it turned out I had failed to link since November. Oh, well... I'll try to be more timely in future! These are mostly more character vignettes for the Acanthus prompt set (even an actual 'main' canon entry or two! Charles! Arran! *dies of shock*), but also a couple of random Edward/Julia bits & pieces.

Dropping the Baton (PG, 1117 words. 1956, 1959, 1988; Ronald Whittaker, Julia Graves, Edward Iveson, Charles Terrell.) Ron is the missing link in the chain, more times than one.

Pins & Needles (PG, 932 words. 1924, 1937, 1949: Isabel Andrews/Nancy Long.) It takes some time for Isabel to find herself.

Across the Wires (PG, 1141 words. 1944, 1959; Charles Terrell, Edward Iveson, Ron Whittaker, Liz Cardew.) There are wires that run right through the centre of Charles’s life, linking things together across the years.

Return of the King (Teen, 676 words. 1964, 1984, 1991: Michael Seaton | Arran, Anna, Thomas Hallam.) Some days Michael Seaton is just a fiery blade waiting to come down on the Dictator Hallam’s head.


Truth in Disguise (PG, 398 words. Edward Iveson/Julia Graves. Magic AU.) They should never have done this, but he wasn’t anything like as sorry as he should have been.

2. I was poking around at some very old fic the other day, including some efforts from This Time Round (the pub outside reality where Doctor Who characters go in between stories, courtesy of alt.drwho.creative on usenet), and while most of my TTR fics don't really transfer so well out of the Round, I found this Harry and Sarah do a classic Agatha Christie fic and though, despite being rather meta-ish at the edges, it's comprehensible as an AU and hopefully fairly entertaining & so I've been tweaking it and uploading it to AO3.

(Some of the characters are aware of the narrative they're in though, and there's some playing around with that. I seem to recall the original idea was that there were things called 'genre bubbles' that could occur around Nameless, and the characters in the vicinity would all start acting in accordance to narrative rules of that genre. Hence Harry and Sarah in a Miss Marple story.) I seem to have written it some time during or soon after S4 of New Who.

1. I decided to do naarmamo again this year. We'll see how it goes, but it's very laid back (indeed, it's practically horizontal in the nicest possible way) and I can always stop, or go down to every other day if I find it a bit much still. Naarmamo, is National Art Making Month, but it's just fun - you make and share one thing that counts as art each day and you can join in whenever. (It started yesterday, but I know people wouldn't mind if someone turned up on the last day if that was when they found it, or all they can manage.) At the moment, I'm planning to do icons each day. (I will share them here, too, at some point.)


2. I finally posted my Eighth Doctor Recs List to who_at_50, just in case there is anyone who would be interested but doesn't follow the comm. It was meant to be part of last year's big fanworkathon, but, er, it was delayed. I was at the time thinking of doing posts for the other two generally under-represented Doctors (along with Two and One), those being Six and Seven, but it's way past the deadline now and maybe it seems a little big-headed, I don't know. I probably will. I like recs lists and masterlists and things. I can't help it.


3. I've been starting to do some odd little bits of Heroes of the Revolution (my gloomy 1970s fake TV show) for runaway_tales, though I don't know if I'll eventually pluck up courage to do any posting. (Hopefully!) Anyway, I was trying to write a timeline for my alternate post-war history. (It's mostly vague). But it was interesting. I had previously settled on 1991 as the date of the series, but I think I should probably pull it back a bit to the mid 1980s. But I was thinking about various things off the back of this, and also the fact that the moment I start speculating about what happened to rl important people, it doesn't work, even though it's a perfectly sensible question. (If there's anyone you'd like me to kill off in this alternate reality, I could do it quite easily, though... ;-p In the meantime, I shall be contemplating foreign agents in Britain and what they might be up to.)

I have one of my other shows ready to go (or almost) but also had this now ready too, which it seemed sensible to post first...

Heroes of the Revolution fanfic. Sorry. I tried not to… but maybe not all that hard. I can't quite live without a bit of original fic of some kind here and there. I think this wound up as more fanfic than plain missing scenes (though it’s inevitably that, too). It was originally meant to be writing up the dialogue I had of Anna interviewing Charles Terrell, but then it grew into something else. (The characters involved are those ‘played’ by Gemma Jones, Alfred Burke and Julian Glover.)

I'm still working on the supporting cast and the episode guide, but I think the main cast and basic set-up has solidified pretty well, so here's part 1 of the first fruits of the isurrendered meme...

The prompt, from jjpor: It's the morning after the revolution before. The Evil Empire has fallen; the Plucky Rebels won against impossible odds, as Plucky Rebels tend to do. Now they've just got to deal with the messy aftermath and, you know, actually govern the place. Preferably without becoming like the regime they've just defeated.


HEROES OF THE REVOLUTION

A critically-acclaimed but long-forgotten (and doubtless studio-bound and dreary, shh, such things are awesome) 13 episode drama series from 1973/4 starring Gemma Jones, Alfred Burke, Julian Glover and Diane Keen.

Set in the near-future in an alternate (but not too different) reality, where a tyrannical regime has been in power in Britain for nearly three decades, a group of freedom fighters led by a man known as "Arran", finally defeat the dictator Hallam - and then a new battle begins, one where the lines are even less clear than before. It explores the ethics of power as a drama plays out between the victorious rebel leaders, the remnant of the old guard, and those who want to find more peaceful solutions for the future.
