1. The classic Who reactor I'm following at the moment managed to reach Earthshock somehow totally unspoiled, which produced a great reaction, both last week in Pts 1&2 at the Cyberman reveal (she loves Cybermen), and then at the final two parts here, pretty much as JNT intended, I'd say. /slightly sadistic, I suppose, sorry, but as someone who read so many of them in Target novelisation form first and got spoiled further by years of DWM first, it's completely fascinating to me.

(I do like this reactor - if you're looking for someone currently going through Classic Who, I'd recommend them - they're thoughtful, enjoying the ride and certain SFX and costumes & guest stars, adored the original Team TARDIS (important), but also willing to be critical sometimes too.)

2. Rarest of Rare Pairs Ficathon, which is actually a commentfest (for all types of fanworks) for rare pairs, so that's fun.

3. [community profile] small_fandoms has a fest going on for posting works in small fandoms there in August, based on a set of Rolling Stones lyrics prompts, which you can check out here.

Otherwise: ♥ all. (it was summer for at least a whole day here, and I'm still not any better at that yet.)
thisbluespirit: (writing)
I do feel that I haven't really updated properly for ages! I've just really spent all of October recovering from my parents' visit, which was a lot to do with unfortunate timing, and when I've been a little steadier in between, i've just done some family history and completely left the writing alone. I feel a bit stronger again now, although I won't make any rash statements about not getting so low again, because whenever I do, I just get immediately worse!

1. Belatedly, but I think not too late yet, [personal profile] undeadrobins is running a fun ficathon - the second Kissathon!

2. Yuletide assignments went out and mine is a fun one! It was for a fandom I had regretted signing up for, but this was the letter that made me be so unwise & I have an idea and it doesn't seem too unrealistic/ambitious, so I'm cautiously excited. (Actual writing happened yet = 0, though so we shall see!)

3. Talking Pictures did indeed provide me with two not-quite-complete installments of The Hidden Truth on Monday and Thursday (and getting up from my afternoon rest to face the worst bit of the day (when I'm lowest) with the prospect of new-to-me old James Maxwell is a delightful way to fight misery). Monday's had less JM (but had plenty of non-evil Bernard Archard*) but then Thursday's was basically a Richard Harris-penned episode featuring James Maxwell and Zia Mohyeddin doing autopsies and getting annoyed by small-town prejudice and aside from the fact that what was missing from this even-more-almost-complete episode was the actual conclusion to whodunnit, I can't say what I enjoyed more. If I'm allowed to be frivolous, it might even have been the height difference between the two of them and the imaginative framing that the director resorted to was my personal highlight. But idk. I'm very happy to have such a thing brought out of the archives and onto my TV. Thanks Talking Pictures, now repeat the one I missed, pleeeeease!!! XD (Still one more to go, although I haven't checked the cast - might be no JM at all.)

4. I was going to try and do Whumptober but I wrote 1 fic in rough. It is still in rough. I hope to type it up soon, though, now! Ah well.

5. I am doing a trick or treat thing on tumblr where I will make one (singular) gif for everyone who leaves an ask saying "trick or treat!". I have quite a few, but not so many that I can't repeat the offer here. Obv this is better suited to tumblr, but if it would also give anyone pleasure here to have one random (middle-ability) gif, then well done on making it down to this part of a longish post and just say "Trick or treat!" in a comment and I will try to make one I think you will like. ♥

There may well have been other things, but this is a good amount of catching up to be going on with!

* Bernard Archard is not only usually invariably evil, he's frequently also undead.

I wrote this 'kisslet' for [personal profile] undeadrobins' kissathon. (Why, no, my Prequel feels have not gone away yet. At least it helps with my forever fandom currently still lying wounded at my feet. ;-p)

Desert Phantoms (321 words) by thisbluespirit
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Padmé Amidala/Obi-Wan Kenobi
Characters: Padmé Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi
Additional Tags: Ficlet, Prompt Fill, Kissing, Padmé Amidala Lives, Post-Canon, Grief/Mourning, Post-Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Kisslet

* [community profile] waybackexchange, an exchange for fandoms over 10 years old (for fic, podfic, art and vids) is now taking nominations! (I'm in two minds about signing up, because I like a bit of a gap between things, but OTOH, I do have rather a lot of elderly fandoms, and it's great to see vids as an option in a general exchange.)

* [community profile] halfamoon - coming up soon! The annual celebration of female characters running 1st-15th Feb, with a prompt list here for advance warning, and there are usually some other fun bits too.

* plus a Sci-Fi/Fantasy prompt meme (actually a commentfest). Looks like fun!
thisbluespirit: (s&s)
Someone wrote me a lovely sapphire & Steel ficlet for the [community profile] historium commentfest (with Silver in the 18th C):

The phantom bird (633 words) by 35391291
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sapphire and Steel
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Silver (S&S)
Additional Tags: 18th Century, Elemental Weirdness, Time Skips, Historium Commentfest 2019
Summary: The bird looks at him sharply, with unblinking eyes. Suddenly, the world seems to shake. The invisible cloud seems to cover everything in its path, and the air whispers wrong, wrong, wrong. The bird shrieks, calling up an old, evil feeling. Its phantom song seems to unhinge the quiet afternoon and the world and time itself.

Silver ends up in West Drayton on a Sunday. Or perhaps, a Friday. Cue time skips, a strange bird, and some very clever sleight of hand.

Also, unrelated, but I started looking at the Hallucinations tag on AO3 for my [community profile] hc_bingo March challenge thing, and saw a work with around 390 tags... which was apparently a 600+ word poem. lol. Fandom. I mean, at least it wasn't just a 40 word prologue, I suppose.

A thing!

For all historical fandoms, fictional & RPF, original historical works, and any fandoms provided the prompt is historical (e.g. historical AUs). Open now for prompts and fills! Click on the banner for link.

If you want to promote it, please c+p the banner code below:

Also I made a rebloggable tumblr post. (Please do reblog, since I deleted mine my accident, I have about 14 followers in total, so my tumblr reach is even more minimal than before!)

As I said, there's suddenly a lot of activity round here, with new comms born every minute, it seems. Here are some things I've spotted that seem potentially cool and relevant to people's interests:

* [personal profile] snickfic's friending meme is huge, and still very much ongoing.

* [community profile] meta_warehouse - for sharing fannish meta.

* [community profile] 100prompts - prompt tables (no specific pairing/fandom/character claims needed) in tables of 30 and 50, plus daily word prompts, and Friday challenges.

* [community profile] historium - a general comm & hub for all history fandoms (RPF and fictional). I've yet to promote it, but I've finished all the initial tweaking now & will do so presently. (Your mods are me and [personal profile] auroracloud and I'd be very happy if anyone else wanted to join us.)

* [personal profile] clachnaben is hosting a Magical Realism Commentfest - You know the drill, multifandom, also rec posting welcome.

(Looking at this, I realise my definition of magical realism is way narrower than theirs; I always had it pegged as like David Almond (Skellig etc) and Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions, Framed) where it either it's not quite magic or it isn't but the real world has a magical effect in itself. I was a children's librarian and they are the only magical realism people I've read. At least, according to my maybe weird definition. But it seems to be more just magic in the real world? Which is an easier definition than "like these two Brit YA authors and I'll know it when I see it...")

(If you're interested in knowing about these sorts of things then the places to follow are chiefly [community profile] fandomcalendar, [site community profile] dw_community_promo and [community profile] fandom_on_dw.)

(This still isn't an introductory post. ;-p)
thisbluespirit: (b7 - Vila)
1. The Obscure & British Commentfest continues! \o/ It is my birthday weekend now, so I shall be pimping again, at least a little, to see if I can poke it into some further weekend action (and then I promise I shall at least stop pimping). It's going nicely and we have a whole bunch of fills (including Spike from Buffy paying a visit to Nouvion and Steel getting sold suits from Mr Humphreys, just for starters).

Thanks to everyone who has helped promote it! It really does make a difference. I also have some rebloggable Tumblr posts, if anyone wants to give it a shout over there. (Most of the time when I complain about Tumblr, that's just me, because I was clearly a person made for LJ and therefore not Tumblr material, but you do realise when trying to promote something multi-fandom like this where the tag-tracking just isn't going to help much, that you have nowhere to go and are totally reliant on reblogs. If I'm missing some major fandom newsletter-type submission blog, let me know.) Anyway, please don't feel obliged, despite my over-thinking stuff, but if you are willing and able, the posts are here, here, here and here. Thank you!

1a. A side-effect of the Commentfest and LJ's relative quietness is that I get temporarily shunted to top of the day's LJs. (And, yes, such power! It puts me up above the gods...! etc. etc. And then I crash straight back into my usual obscurity.)

Anyway, the point of this is that LJ has a button you can press to automatically friend the top 15 journals, so I get random friending during the fest. If you have friended me over the last week and you did it on purpose and aren't a bot, please do comment to this post and wave at me, and I'll friend you back. (I just don't want to friend people who wanted someone popular and interesting! It would be embarrasing all round.)

2. Not entirely about the fest, but definitely Obscure & British - I have been writing some things! Here is an NYR fic, two fills for the fest, and a belated Trope Bingo effort, which can all be found over at AO3 (and the fills via the Masterpost, too, of course):

Welcome to the Obscure & British comment fest IV! This is a comment fest for any small(ish) British fandom and open to all fanworks.

If you've ever loved any (non-large) British fandoms, find yourself too obscure for most fests, or you're busy wondering why there's still no Emma Peel in all this Avengers stuff, you're in the right place. Come on in and help yourself to a cup of tea and a crumpet. Also you should make prompts and fill them.

Rules & Guidelines
This commentfest works in the same way as most comment ficathons, although all kinds of fanworks are welcome. (Fanart, icons, fanmixes, vids, or whatever your creative mind can come up with or prompt for.) Just leave your prompt and/or browse through other people's prompts to see what you can fill.

1. Be polite - no bashing or shaming of anyone, or any prompts, characters, ships or fandoms! Thank you.

2. One prompt per post, please use format: Fandom(/Fandom), Character(s)/Pairing(s), prompt (i.e "Spooks, Tom/Ruth, apocalypse AU"). You may repost prompts from previous years (or even from elsewhere, as long as that's okay with the other fest/comm/whatever).

3. Post fills as replies (or links) to the comment containing the prompt. Please format the subject line as follows: Fandom - Character(s)/Pairing(s) - Ratings/Warnings (if included). There's a fills thread at the start of the post. Please also link your fill here, if you can. (I will also start up a masterlist post as soon as we have some fills.)

4. You may fill your own prompts if you wish, and multiple fills are more than welcome. (No prompt claiming needed.)

5. For crossovers any fandom is allowed as long as the first fandom qualifies. (If it's a cracky multi-fandom crossover prompt, that's fine, too, though try and make sure there are always equal or more eligible fandoms in proportion to those that are non-eligible.)

6. Any other questions - there's a questions thread at the start of the post if there's anything else you want to ask.

7. Prompt, fill, away!

Eligible Fandoms
Basically, any rare to smallish/medium British fandom, no matter how odd, old, obscure, non-existent, random or how shiny and new - anything that's not on the below list is fine. (Definitions of British are also fairly wide and hand-wavy - check on the questions thread if you're not sure.)

Non-eligible fandoms
ALL non-British fandoms are ineligible and the following fandoms are British but too large and therefore ineligible for this fest (although don't forget that you can prompt for any fandom as a crossover with an eligible fandom):

Chronicles of Narnia (all), Doctor Who (2005+), Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, The Hobbit (all), James Bond (Craig!Bond films), The Kingsman, Lord of the Rings (all), Merlin, The Musketeers (BBC), One Direction, Pride & Prejudice (all), Primeval, Robin Hood (BBC), Sherlock (BBC), Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle, The Silmarillion, Torchwood.

(RPF is welcome! Please use specific categories when prompting (e.g. history by century, and all actor/bandom RPF by individual series/film/band or whatever grouping seems most appropriate. In the spirit of the fest, please try and avoid RPF for non-eligible shows and super-popular actors like Tom Hiddleston or Benedict Cumberbatch.)

There's no closing date for prompts or fills - the fest will stay open until next year's post goes up. Once you've created a fill, you're welcome to crosspost it anywhere you like. (If you're posting to AO3, there's no collection for the fest, but there is an "Obscure & British Commentfest" tag you can use if you want.)

If you want to promote the fest, then thank you! Please do. You can find a selection of banners here, or feel free to make your own.

You can find last year's fest here. Also: O&B 2014 and O&B 2013. If you want to fill or repost a previous prompt, you may, although please also post to the fills thread on the current post.

ETA: Masterlist of Fills!

For those who don't have an LJ account, or prefer to remain anonymous, anon commenting is on!

(If you have problems with LJ, sorry, but it works much better in one place. However, anon commenting is on, if that helps.)

Welcome to the Obscure & British comment fest III!

This comment!fest works in the same way as most comment ficathons - although all kinds of fanworks are definitely welcome here. (Fanart, icons, fanmixes, vids, whatever your creative mind can come up with.)

1. Be polite - no bashing of anyone, any prompts, characters, ships or fandoms! Thank you.

2. One prompt per post, please use format: Fandom, Character/Pairing, prompt. You may repost prompts from previous years (or even from elsewhere, as long as that's okay with the other fest/comm/whatever).

3. Post fills as replies (or links) to the comment containing the prompt. Please format the subject line as follows: Fandom - Character/Pairing - Rating/Warnings (if needed). There's a fills thread at the start of the post. Please also link your fill here.

4. You may fill your own prompts if you wish. Multiple fills are more than welcome. (Please don't 'claim' prompts! Simply create your fill, and come back and post it here. In the unlikely event someone else has got in first, well, everyone profits from more fannish content in a rare/medium fandom!)

5. For crossovers any fandom is allowed as long as the first fandom qualifies. (If it's a cracky multi-fandom crossover prompt, that's fine, too, though try and make sure there are always equal or more eligible fandoms in proportion to those that are non-eligible.)

6. Any other questions - there's a questions thread at the start of the post.

7. Prompt, fill, away!

Eligible Fandoms
Basically, any non-large British fandom at all! You can prompt for anything that fits, no matter how odd, old or obscure, or shiny and new - anything that's not on the below list is great.

Non-eligible fandoms
ALL non-British fandoms are ineligible (except as crossovers) and the following fandoms are British but too large and therefore ineligible for this fest (sorry):

Chronicles of Narnia (all), Doctor Who (2005+), Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, The Hobbit (all), James Bond (Craig!Bond films only), Lord of the Rings (all), Merlin, One Direction, Primeval, Robin Hood (BBC), Sherlock (BBC), Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle, The Silmarillion, Skins (UK), Torchwood.

(RPF is welcome! Please just use specific categories when prompting (e.g. history by century, and all actor/bandom RPF by individual series/film/band). In the spirit of the fest, please try and avoid RPF for the non-eligible shows above, or super-popular actors like Tom Hiddleston or Benedict Cumberbatch.)

Anything British not listed above is more than welcome here! British TV, films, books, history, comedy, RPF, plays, songs, radio dramas, folklore, mythology, anthropomorphic - it's all good, and there's absolutely no such thing as too obscure or too odd.

(You can also find last year's fest here and the 2013 post here. If you want to fill a previous prompt, do feel free, although please also post to the fills thread on the current post rather than the previous editions.)

ETA: Masterlist of fills here.

Also, anon commenting is now actually on! (Sorry to anyone who tried while I only thought I had it on. It's fixed now.)
