Beyond the Roundels

I have made it through all the current appointments! \o/ My boiler has even had its annual service (elusiveness of plumber turned out to be due to having a holiday and injuring himself on said holiday). There will be a whole bunch of new things soon, I'm sure, and I will continue to be erratically up and down with the chronic illness, but that is the nature of the game, but I have at least got some of the annual/bi-annual things done for a bit.

Some small fannish things:

1. New Seasonal Challenge at tardis_library (the DW reccing comm I run), which is Character Surprise!

(I get to generate five random DW characters from some set lists (New, Classic, etc), so I like running this one. XD) Anyone can sign up and rec, and absolutely no penalty if you don't, or I would have had to ban myself by now and I'm the mod, so that would be awkward. It's open till June.


2. I have signed up for no_true_pair's mini-round in hope! The prompts should be posted tomorrow, but you can sign up till then, and after as long as you don't look at the prompts first.

I will be very interested to see what the results are! (no_true_pair is effectively like the 15 Characters Meme, but less complicated and less characters and you're supposed to actually write the results, so obviously it is a very me-targeted fest and I also think people should join me in it!! XD)

1. So hc_bingo are doing their March Amnesty recs challenge again, which means I get a strip and make of rec list of at least 15 fanworks (using any one or more of the squares):

loss of identity

forced soulbonding

isolation

That's a lot easier than the set I had last year, I think. If nothing else, I must have some Spooks stuff bookmarked for loss of identity, among other things. I do enjoy doing this one and always wind up reading unexpected stuff for it!


2. I also think I've finally got my belated yuletide assignment done. I need to edit it once more and get it betaed, and then I can post to the NYR collection. \o/


3. My space_swap assignment seems pretty nice, too, so fingers crossed for that - especially as I am going to try to sign up for hurtcomfortex too. (The sign-ups are close, but hurtcomfortex is due a whole month after space_swap, and oddly, that might actually be less stressful than just having one exchange going with such a long writing period.)

1. I am writing Dracula (TV 1968)/Doctor Who, with Ace meeting the others post-canon for the hc_bingo April crossover challenge. This is what happens if nobody gives me prompts and I'm doing a Seventh Era manifesto while making gifs of Dracula. The downsides are that I don't know if I can finish it in time, as I'm not really that great right now, and probably nobody but me would want to read it anyway, so it will probably die in my notepad if I don't. So I will try.


2. I sort of accidentally bought a paid Dreamwidth account the other day while trying to see if it was now possible for me to do so. (It hadn't been before for a lot of UK users). Well, it is now, and I have 100 icon spaces, which I am fast filling up. Journal-space is just so much less fun without icons; everything has perked up now. I am getting all the icons I need for comms and writing purposes while wondering about making original Element icons and also how many Silver and James Maxwell icons a person might be able to get away with. And is there any justification for Mrs Mortimer icons? (I still love her even if I have mostly stopped going on about Public Eye.) Plus, I need to find new icons for new things. And it's more fun to make them when you might be able to use them, even if only for a year.

Anyway, this is what happens if I get really annoyed at not having my Dracula icon any more for the third time in three days.


3. I am working on a Seventh Doctor Era manifesto for tardis_library. It's very hard to narrow down the recs! At the moment, I have a good list but it is free of some of my most favourite Seven authors which feels pretty weird and wrong. I have a growing list of things that will need reccing separately on the comm afterwards now. Which is also good, as long as I remember to do it!

(Talking of which can a person justify separate Ace and Seven icons, or should she just have a Seven 'n' Ace one still, or even have all three? But then 100 icon spaces are not unlimited icon spaces especially if you are a multifannish person with multiple comms and also one of those fandoms is Doctor Who and you like all 56 years it and the audios and some of the books...*)

Oh, and ruuger has posted their Twelfth Doctor manifesto for the same challenge, so you should definitely look at that. (Posted on TARDIS Library's first birthday, too! I am thrilled that it has come this far in these fallen days. <3)


3a. I've been planning to do a rec set for the genprompt_bingo square "genderswap" as a way of dealing with it (not my trope, and I wanted to do the border bingo) but just as I'm getting on nicely with it (especially after realizing that it also includes Rule 63 fic), I had an idea on how to fill it myself. Self, that is just inconvenient. I've been making this rec set possible for a year now!




* There may be some other advantages to having a paid account, but I'm all about the 100x100 icon spaces.

I'll be pimping it about probably tomorrow and/or the weekend in a few relevant places, but a head's up here, too - the reccer's bingo is now closed, and our Autumn challenge is to pick any Whoniverse character and make 5-15 recs (for any fanworks) between now and the 6th Dec.

1. Yuletide noms closed this morning - next up comes the fun! The full tag set, letters appearing, making requests! \o/

(And guess what? I nommed the 1968 TV Dracula as my third fandom. Just as I was about to repent my folly, some nonnie commented on the fandom promotion thread to say that they liked the look of it and that was all the encouragement I needed. So I will have three impossible fandoms on my request list. /sheepish)

But here we go again, folks! *bounces*


2. het_reccers is having an anniversary Trope Bingo, so I requested a card, because that should make me, you know, actually rec something during the month. ( Cut for image & mildly NSFW trope names )


3. I made a post to one of my comms - dw_allsorts (the Doctor Who mini-table prompt comm*) asking for suggestions for prompt tables. I wondered if anyone here would have any suggestions. There's more details over at the post, and there isn't a desperate need - it's just that I know everyone is so different and I'm very aware that all of these tables were made by me, so I thought it might be quite nice to have some by other people? If anyone has any ideas, or would have joined in if there was a table like x, now's your chance! (Also, if anyone would like to suggest a theme for a table/tables, that would also be cool. I didn't think of that when making the post).


4. I wrote a thing for runaway_tales the other day! And so what, you cry? Well, it was not for Heroes of the Revolution, it was for The Pirate Queen (another of the three fake shows I did at the time, only one that had current actors and was In Space! With Pirates! (Well, Pirates-ish.) I had some thoughts about it, so I might occasionally write some bits for it? I don't know, but there's this, which I did hastily for the Flavour of the Day:

calufrax is seriously out of reccers this time. If you have at least 4 fics from Teaspoon that you could rec, you can help.

I've literally just recced, so I can't do much more myself just now, but it is worthwhile & it's usually fun.

It's not scary - everything you need, including the posting template is there in the sign-up post. calufrax gets boosted on to Tumblr and other places, too & non-LJ users can rec as well.

(I don't do much signal boosting and I know most people round here follow the comm anyway... but it's calufrax, people, I have to try.)

Well, I have now finished with reccing for calufraxand while I was looking forward to it more than not, I had no idea that it would turn out to be quite so rewarding, but so it was. I'm still a little regretful of the 4 fics that came close, but choices have to be made.

Also congratulations to persiflage_1and primsongwho are both winners in the Children of Time Awards, so well done them! I managed to make runner up, but I'm still too pleased with the whole reccing thing to take in anything else just yet. However, it means people must have bothered to vote for them & given the odd pair of fics, well... There were some wonderful fics on those lists, so I should at least give a little hop or jump or something presently.
