Fic: The Cornfield (S&S)
Jul. 29th, 2013 01:20 pmI need to make a proper post again, but: I am better than last week, thanks to everyone who commented on the other post! ♥ It's still all been very limiting so I have mostly, when online, lurked, done some wrangling, and continued to edit this in snatches (which I had finished well before last weekend).
So, hopefully, I'll catch up presently, but I'm not sure I've not used up too much brain getting this finished, so I'm posting this now before I'm not even up to posting. (Probably this is unwise, because a thing I mostly wrote while slightly light-headed should have a beta, but I wanted to post and be damned for my typos. I didn't tag it with "Author Wrote This With An Overheated Brain" though. It would have given people the wrong idea altogether.)
Anyway, first
trope_bingo fic! It is Very Long for me these days. I'm fairly confident the other squares won't be... It's also very, very weird. (So,
seriesfive, I hope you enjoy it! I blame you for everything: aiding and abetting, sharing a brain cell as regards Elements, lending me said brain cell when needed and luring me into trope_bingo via Round 1. And for all the lemurs.)

Actually, I have to say, I have been wanting to do something where I really played with what Elements actually might do, instead of just brushing over it. This particular story and the trope and thus the non-con was not what I had in mind. But it is fascinating and very freeing, because who can say what they do? (Well, PJ Hammond, maybe, but thankfully, he's not ready my dodgy trope fic). So I was really determined, once I had trope_bingo as an excuse to really try and do that this time. So it was fun. Elements are so beautifully weird and I don't think I'm ever going to quite get over that, not entirely.
Also I felt marginally guilty about writing this, but rewatched some of Assignment 3 again for research. rewatching A3.2 puts paid to any feelings of guilt for shipping the two. I'm quite sure that's not what either of them intended, but, really...! People always seem to miss how much Steel plays Silver, especially when he's not sure of him. (All those metal bits and pieces - he puts them out for Silver to find, uses it as a way to give himself time to suss Silver out, I suppose.)

Date: 2013-07-30 11:43 am (UTC) This, as you pretty much say in the rest of your comments, could be true of nearly everything to do with S&S and Elements, ever. That is the fascination of it.
I hope you don't think I'm a bad person... but I can't help being drawn to wonder about what Elements do and I can't promise this'll be the last time I explore it in fic. Although I do faithfully promise it won't be Silver/Steel under the influence of sex pollen in an imaginary cornfield ever again. ;-)

Date: 2013-07-31 07:55 pm (UTC)(I'd kind of assume they could do it the human way if there was need. or they were Silver or Sapphire and they wanted to for the hell of it. But it's not what Elements would usually do.)
I think about this a worrying amount. *looks sheepish*

Date: 2013-08-04 05:12 pm (UTC)I tend to not really read pr0n at all, except once in a very blue moon, when I make the attempt (and usually regret it and mutter about people getting people's eye colours wrong)... and here I am in the most gen fandom I'm ever been in wanting to ship everything in sight. I'm clearly just contrary!
Anyway, as you say, telepathic stuff! It's canon, and they also seem to need actual contact to facilitate it, and I find that a very nice combination! And certainly the telepathic communication doesn't seem to be taken for granted - it isn't an automatic thing they do, purely for reasons of usefulness. (Steel is very reluctant to let Silver talk to Sapphire that way in A3, for perfectly understandable reasons, because Silver looks indecently pleased if he gets allowed anywhere near Sapphire's mind.)
I think I am partly fascinated because they're all so different in their natures, so presumably what they'd do and how it would work would be slightly different depending on the combination of Elements. And then wondering whether they ever do/would do anything with humans and for what reasons, and that that would be different depending on the Element... and then I worry about myself and this obsession and wonder why no one else seems to think like this and conclude that though Silver/Sapphire/Steel is my OT3 here, I seem to wind up at Elements/Elements/Everyone. And worry about myself again.
And then you turned up! ♥
;-)
(And I am SO SORRY about lack of beta-ing going on here. It really could take me a while now. I have corrections done for the bit you sent that I need to type up some day when the weather allows for that AND writing, but if you do want to find someone else in the meantime, I understand, because I'm not at all sure about my response time now summer went and happened at me. :-C )

Date: 2013-08-05 08:41 pm (UTC)I will be up for more beta-ing in the future, but I suppose I had better be a little less ambitious as regards length for the moment! :-)

Date: 2013-08-10 08:31 pm (UTC)Yes, sorry, that was just me not being clear again - I meant rather that physical contact seems to facilitate the telepathic contact to some extent (or in itself include a telepathic element, which is probably true given the way that they take "readings" of things by touch). So i just meant, that for shipppiness you have this combination of light physical contact, or just closeness, and also even when they're not speaking telepathically, they communicate a lot by look at touch - I think you calling empathic is quite good. Anyway, I find that combination very fascinating and attractive.
It seems quite possible to me that all those elements don't interact with one another between assignments.
Yes, I get that impression too - that they only tend to see each other when they're out on assignment. I also get the impression that Sapphire and Steel (and Lead's the same in Assignment 1) go from one assignment to another, whereas technicians/specialists seem to do that but also canonically spend time waiting (doing nothing, as Steel says). But, yes, when it comes to that, it's so very open to interpretation. I don't have a clue. :-)
,i>Nonetheless I think its an obsession that's quite justifiable. It's great to have a fandom/canon that offers so many enticing hints without giving any reliable answers. I think that's why S&S fascinates me the most, even though I like to dabble in others, too.
♥ Well, yes. Me, too - as you can tell!

(Silver meets a dragon sounded perfectly well thought-out to me.)

Date: 2013-08-14 07:33 pm (UTC)And good luck with the NaNo - it doesn't sound trivial at all. Probably all the stress you've had hasn't helped with getting to grips with it - but I'm sure you will!
