Harry kept a watchful eye on the door, not that the VIPs he was talking to would have noticed. Harry knew how to be discreet. He was expecting someone else to arrive, someone who was far more important as far as he was concerned, but he wasn’t quite sure she’d turn up.

One further glance, though, and there she was, not the casual Ruth of the grid, but a distractingly elegant figure in a long black dress. He hastily excused himself to cross the room to meet her.

“Harry,” she said, sounding breathless. “Is this all right? I’m not overdressed – too formal -?”

“Perfect,” he said, and took her arm. “I’m relieved you could make it. The difficulty back at the – ah – office is finished?”

Ruth nodded. Then she leaned towards him and gave a sudden, quicksilver smile; there and gone again. “So, which one is Price?”

“Ruth!” he said, feigning shock. “Don’t tell me you don’t know that already.”

“Well, it is best to make absolutely sure before ruining someone’s life. Isn’t it?”

Harry gave her a grin. “Oh, I don’t know...”

Sapphire was studying something hanging from the ceiling. It must be decorative, Steel thought with vague distaste. String and wood and paint in the shape of stars and one crescent moon.

“Six,” said Sapphire, and looked at him. “Stars.”

Steel examined the object more closely. “Is that significant?”

“No,” Sapphire said, and smiled at him for a long while, enough to make him edge forward, both uncomfortable and inevitably drawn towards her.

“Then what? Is something else wrong?”

She was still smiling as she put a hand to his arm. “Just a mobile. To amuse a very young child. Harmless.”

Sapphire. He couldn’t quite manage the irritation he should have at her wasting his time, nor did he move out of her hold.

“Pretty,” she added, and then shrugged slightly, still smiling at him. She leant in towards him, her hair brushing his face. “Don’t you think?”

Sorry. :( We tried! I think there's a lot of us who have been feeling pretty depressed today, but I appreciate that it's worse for those of you who are ill. I was feeling pretty optimistic yesterday! There's this story here at the Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/may/08/election-2015-stuart-heritage-nine-reasons-to-be-cheerful) which might raise a smile. And here! Cute animals! I found the perfect cure for being depressed about the election - I saw the Spooks film. So now I'm depressed from that instead. But watching old Spooks, so please can I have 10 (safe and sound) with Dimitri & or / Erin.

“You really ought to be more careful,” said Martha, although she thought immediately that it was a waste of breath telling that to any version of the Doctor.

The Doctor gave her a bright smile. “Yes, yes, I suppose I should. But I seem to have had such a lot of trouble with losing my memories this time around that I thought making a back-up would be a good idea.”

“And you didn’t think that the weird alien guy draining and storing memories might be up to no good?”

He gave her an even more winning smile. “Martha, Martha – you can’t wander round the universe thinking the worst of people like that!”

“Well, don’t do it again,” she said, as sternly as she could. “Consider it my professional advice – someone wants to extract your memories and put them in a jar, you turn them down.”

“Noted, Dr Jones.”

“It’s just as well I was here.”

“So it was!” he said, and kissed her enthusiastically. “Thanks,” he added, once he let go of her. “For the memories!”

“Damn,” said Martha, watching him go. Were all versions of the Doctor so careless with their kisses? She thought about that for a moment, and then had to smile. Might be interesting to find out, she supposed.

I'm sorry about the depressing election results. I remember feeling shattered after George W. Bush won re-election over here. I was like, "How is this possible? Who are these people who voted for him, and how can they live in the same country that I do?"
