100 Things I Like in 100 Icons (#004)

Onwards, and an obvious one, but it was on the list of topics that persiflage_1 gave me (and I promised I'd include all those. Except maybe the lemons):

4.Sapphire and Steel



Sapphire: (to Silver, playing with a fruit machine): Sometimes you're supposed to lose. Well, most times you're supposed to lose.

I know I've said far too much about this show since I watched it (obsession is terrible when you've not even got a proper rl to balance it out with) but maybe I can find something new?

One of the things that caused me to watch it, and appealed to me about it once I had, was the fanfic. I'd always vaguely lumped the show in with The Avengers, and assumed Sapphire and Steel were code names. A DWM interview with David Collings ages ago made me wonder if it might be something else, but I didn't have a chance to find out.

And then there was the fanfic. Looking for good Doctor Who crossovers, I came across first Blue and then The Glade. They weren't just good fics, they were both perfectly accessible to a newbie, and mysterious and beautiful. And justice_turtle told me that, yes, pretty much all the S&S fanfic was that great.

And it was, and I love the potential for writing in this fandom. The possibility for weird time-related genfics, the sheer otherness and mystery surrounding the central characters, and (for someone who has an inability to write much in the way of ships or anything approaching pr0n), the strange freedom that the idea of telepathic shippage brings is fascinating. And it allows you to look at the world from a very different point of view, and I love that. The whole concept is beautiful, and there's hardly any canon to bother over. It's also the only fandom I know of where you have to worry during a fic in case you explain too much, or make the plot overly logical.

Since I'm waxing lyrical about both the fic that exists, and the potential for what a person could write, this post was immediately preceded by the epic S&S recs post I've built up since last summer - I finished it a few weeks ago, so it's one I made earlier. Please forgive the morning's spammage.

Hahaha, the S&S intro has to be the worst I've ever heard, coupled with the best graphics I've ever seen. Seriously I love that weird dissolving fire grid thingy.

I like that you like S&S because it lets you write shippiness! This is also a reason I like it (because of you writing shippiness I mean).

Lemons

I want to listen to Cabin Pressure v badly already!

Also, while I do actually like lemons, I don't really want to make an icon of one, or post a whole post about them. ;-p So:

I like lemons. If you give me a lemon or two, I can make a lemon cake or sponge, or a lemon meringue pie, and then make some lemonade with what is left. They are handy to have around to add to general cooking. Sometimes I don't use them and they grow small and hard in my fridge and I have to throw them away.

I think that is all I have to say about Lemons. :-)

Yes, like so. It's a challenge someone came up to generate more content for LJ, so there's no time limit, and it can be any 100 things, or you can do them in bundles of 5 or 10 or 20, or whatever. The original post is here. :-)

Hmm. The voice thing is odd, but then... S&S needs something v odd. I'm not sure what would seem right with it. And those lines are just about the only explanation we get. I'm glad you like the graphics. At least there was something good in the weird old thing I recced... :lol:

Yes. Not that I don't ship other ships sometimes, but I fail at writing and reading stuff much. I think some of it's to do with the language, but, hey, maybe I have Issues.

Thanks! I just seem to need things on my mp3 player to actually listen to. I looked on Amazon for it, and it's available as a download only, which is good, because it was v cheap, but I'm just a bit wary of that, because I'll have to load their software to get it & hope there's no incompatibility with the files or anything. But all the clips I've heard and everything you've said makes it sound brilliant - and so much my sort of thing! :-)
