"And how," said the earnest Grivok elder, "does one complete the ceremony in your culture? We do like to be sensitive to such things and add to our knowledge of other cultures." He held up a hand to summon his assistant over, ready to record the answer with a plastic stick on what looked like a futuristic clipboard.

The Doctor spluttered. "Now, look here, we've been patient enough with this - this nonsense! It's about time you let me and my new bride get on with - aha-hmm, our own domestic affairs."

"Oh, I don't think there's any need to be quite so coy," said Barbara. She smiled warmly at the elder and then held out her hand to the Doctor. "The bride merely shakes the groom's hand - like so -"

She and the Doctor shook hands with great solemnity.

"And that's all there is to it!"

"In that case, we now record you as certified bound spouses and you have the free run of the city. Please do try not to contravene any more of our laws and we hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in J'ki."

The Doctor shook his head after the two departing Grivoki and then shot Barbara a guilty look. "I, er, don't think there's any need to bother the others with this little affair."

"Oh, no," agreed Barbara. She took his arm, as they headed off in search of Ian and Vicki, who would indeed, never let this one die if they heard about it.

The Doctor gave a sudden chuckle. "Better be careful, my dear! If shaking hands has us bound for life, goodness only knows what we might get from linking arms. Dear dear. Whatever next?."

"Oh, really, Doctor," said Barbara, and kept a firm hold of him. "It's nothing to worry about - we are married after all!"

The Doctor merely laughed to himself. Miss Wright was a most resourceful young woman and, indeed, he could do worse!

Ha, no, it's fine! In just wanted to tell you that I defied your choice to be episode-relevant and then it was, lol. But since Adam would totally refute me referring to "Black Echo" in that way, here's a different take on the same combination.

"Miss Jones," said Adam in awful tones, "you must listen to me when I tell you to keep out of these affairs. One shudders to think what might have happened."

Georgie merely bit into her toasted muffin and continued, regardless of both Adam's criticism and her mouthful of bread product. "Nnd it wmph jst -"

Adam raised his eyes to the hills, or at least to the ceiling of his reconstructed house.

"Do you mind where you're spitting that butter?" said Simms, bringing in some fresh tea.

Georgie swallowed the remainder of the muffin. "Sorry! Anyway, like I said, I found the secret compartment -"

"Because after I found it" - Georgie's hand reached out for another muffin. Simms swiftly removed the plate - "I heard someone coming, so I nipped inside and I tell you, I heard them! They were having a row over who did what and what they were going to do about you. I had to come and tell you!"

"You must have been mistaken! They are both charming ladies and I am sure neither could have been capable of killing Mr Chester in such a manner. Besides, they did not give the impression of being in alliance."

Georgie stretched out far enough to grab another muffin and studied it happily before lifting her head to glance up at Adam. "Well, they are. I can give you all the gory details if you like - which reminds me, isn't there any jam?"

Simms said, "Not for the likes of you, Miss Jones."

She stuck out her tongue.

"Ah," said Adam. He sat down on the nearest fin-de-siecle chair. "I see. In that case, Miss Jones, I must observe that I have never known you to tell an untruth. You had best tell me all - although, this time, I trust, with a little more decorum."

Simms passed her the jam.

hello hello. Even if it took me a month!

16 Prison AU + 25 Fairy Tale AU = Sapphire and Steel.

This is a perfect prompt! I've been admiring it for a month now, and I think basically therefore this is something that I wouldn't write. I'd just frame the prompt somewhere and look it every so often and go, Ah, a perfect fic in waiting there if I had brain to write it.

Maybe one day brain would happen and then clearly it would be an eerie (and hopefully beautiful, which is why I would need suitable Brain) fairy tale AU of Assignment Six, a two strange beings locked in a tower... somewhere in a... somewhere... something... did I mention the brain thing?
