thisbluespiritI had to go out yesterday, am therefore v ill again for a bit. The result was: I amused myself with the Unconventional Courtship Generator again yesterday. (I made a new customised list of random people I like from things I didn't want to make a whole list from. It didn't feel inclined to use most of them, but if the occasional intruder pops up in these, that's why.)

Btw, I keep meaning to say this to you, but I have been so ill for so long anyway, and i don't even know if you're still interested, or might have found this out anyway, but if you recall us talking about how weirdly empty Martin Jarvis's post-Forsyte CV was, and why, I picked up his autobio after Christmas, and there was a reason for it being so. He had two tumours up his nose making it increasingly hard to talk and didn't know what was causing it for a couple of years, so he found it increasingly hard to work, and then after they were treated he essentially had a breakdown in reaction and through the course of that lost the confidence of some directors, who like reliable actors. Anyway, so it genuinely was a weirdly shaped CV, and that was why.

(c) That's really much more like one of your characters than I expected actual Martin Jarvis to be.

(I still think if I had three hundred dollars to burn I would buy the screenplay of Count Three and Pray (1955) on AbeBooks that used to belong to Van Heflin.)

Date: 3 Mar 2023 09:27 pm (UTC)Yes, it does seem ironic that it turns out that he's the only one of my faves that I know of to have had a David Collings-esque collapse - he completely froze up in a readthrough for a show called The Contenders when the actor playing his fictional rival had a go at him (whether for real or more method acting, he can't really say) and also had a psychosomatic heart attack (again, deeply ironically, while being chased by girls because of being a 60s heartthrob after the FS and Nicholas Nickleby. I suppose it's one way to prevent early fame going to your head, but not a very pleasant one!
Also, it does mean that my first reaction to watching him in the FS was that he didn't sound like Martin jarvis yet was also more correct than I realised: the nasal spray that he was taking to combat the tumours made his voice sound different to normal as well.
And after he started to recover properly, he went straight off to be vamped by Hammer! (as you do.)
