Fannish things
Jul. 21st, 2024 02:11 pm1. The classic Who reactor I'm following at the moment managed to reach Earthshock somehow totally unspoiled, which produced a great reaction, both last week in Pts 1&2 at the Cyberman reveal (she loves Cybermen), and then at the final two parts here, pretty much as JNT intended, I'd say. /slightly sadistic, I suppose, sorry, but as someone who read so many of them in Target novelisation form first and got spoiled further by years of DWM first, it's completely fascinating to me.
(I do like this reactor - if you're looking for someone currently going through Classic Who, I'd recommend them - they're thoughtful, enjoying the ride and certain SFX and costumes & guest stars, adored the original Team TARDIS (important), but also willing to be critical sometimes too.)
2. Rarest of Rare Pairs Ficathon, which is actually a commentfest (for all types of fanworks) for rare pairs, so that's fun.
3.
small_fandoms has a fest going on for posting works in small fandoms there in August, based on a set of Rolling Stones lyrics prompts, which you can check out here.
Otherwise: ♥ all. (it was summer for at least a whole day here, and I'm still not any better at that yet.)

That's hotter than we got at the hottest on Friday, lol. I hope it stays more manageable for a bit, anyway - as long as there's some proper air, that's the thing.

Date: 2024-07-21 03:49 pm (UTC)... omg. I might have to watch that. HOW you stay unspoiled is beyond me (or - are they American?), but how both amazing and awful. (I hated that episode. It felt like simply waiting for the ending, and coloured the whole thing.)

I hear ya. Not that I ever read either of those, but I knew most of Classic Who before watching.

Date: 2024-07-21 05:29 pm (UTC)They are American, yes, and additionally, they got into DW via reacting, even if that was quite a long time ago now, so I think they've always been trying to avoid it on the internet ever since. But the first reactor I ever watched was a UK Classic Who reactor and they had no idea, either, although, like you, they enjoyed the episode less overall, although they were much more impressed by the second half, so sesskasays's reaction here was far more entertaining. She's enjoying Five so far anyway - she's loved the variety, and appreciated Kinda, all of which makes me happy - and hopeful she'll get the most out of the rest of the 80s.

*nods* I suppose it makes a difference how far you are into fandom or not. It seems impossible to us, in it, but outside of it, it clearly isn't -

Date: 2024-07-21 03:58 pm (UTC)You know, my first response on reading that is to go "oh, wow" and be surprised and impressed that anyone can manage that at this late date. Except then I remembered that not one but two people whose New Who reactions I've been watching lately managed to reach "Dalek" without having any idea what a Dalek is. (One of them had a shirt with a picture of one on it someone had given her, and knew what it was called, but knew nothing beyond that. "Will he be a new robot friend?" she wondered, and I am still laughing about that weeks later. Oh, honey.)
Anyway, maybe I should check that out. I still remember how deeply the end of "Earthshock," well, shook me, back in the day.

Date: 2024-07-21 05:37 pm (UTC)LOL, and, aww, nooo - and I think one of those is the same New New Who guy who did s14, yes? It's like on tumblr, I follow a bunch of these "have you seen/read" poll blogs and the biggest percent for most things is "Never heard of it." We are all in our own echo chambers! We just have the Daleks and Cybermen in ours. XD
This reactor did recognise Adric's name when he first turned up in s18, but she obviously didn't twig why/how she knew it, even once Earthshock got going.
I like sesskasays out of the current Classic Who reactors - her enjoyment of many of the things I enjoy/laugh at while also being able to take a story seriously when it's worth it are both things I appreciate. I think so far one of her favourite things was Harrison Chase out of "Seeds of Doom". (One of her comments from Kinda was that Hindle should meet Harrison Chase, lol. Talking of which she has snake-phobia and she thinks she's now seen the snake-story that everyone told her would turn up at some point. Still, at least the title of the next one will warn her!!)
Anyway, maybe I should check that out. I still remember how deeply the end of "Earthshock," well, shook me, back in the day.
Aww. I came too late; I hadn't read that Target book, but I knew what was going to happen. I did enjoy it, though! (sorry, Adric.)

I think it’s because I just can’t keep myself from trying to find more stuff about the game/show beyond just the game/show itself, and also sometimes that other stuff is what gets me into the thing in the first place and I’ve been spoiling myself because I didn’t think I’d get into it, so by the time I actually check the thing out I already know the twists and turns
The commentfest also looks fun. I’m not sure if I’ll participate, as I have an exchange fic due at the end of the week, but I’m almost done with that and I want to at least try

Date: 2024-07-22 08:48 am (UTC)The guy who started with s14 is UgoWatch - the S14 playlist is here and he really is/was so delightfully enthusiastic, engaged and new to it all. It was really nice to see someone starting at a different point. There are obviously reasons why mostly do Rose first, but at this stage, with it being older than Survival was in 2005... I think people should be a little less linear here and there - or (unreasonable take) go full linear and start in 1963, lol.

Yes, even if you don't get spoiled for all of it, it's easy to pick up a bit more than maybe you'd have liked. But it is interesting how much harder it seems to be outside of these kind of fandom circles.

I'm pretty sure it runs to the end of September? So you should be able to drop in next week just fine! Good luck with the writing.

Date: 2024-07-22 03:35 am (UTC)Oy, I know I’ve gotten spoiled for pretty much everything I’ve watched, be it anime or TV, but there are many shows I;ve managed to keep myself from getting spoiled so that I would be surprised by any huge revelations, twists and turns. As to getting spoiled, it's usually from either pure curiosity or from cultural osmosis.

Or, indeed, general fandom osmosis, I think - if you're in circles where people are watching/into whatever it is, it's hard not to pick up something. And with people getting into Classic Who who've already watched New Who, it's particularly difficult to avoid - but, of course, reactors are generally outside of those circles.

Date: 2024-07-26 10:07 am (UTC)I will never forget seeing Earthshock go out for the first time. Don't think I knew who the Cybermen were, so that cliffhanger was wasted on me. But Adric...! I don't know why I was so convinced that the death of a hero was impossible, given what we'd just seen in B7 a few months earlier. But then Who is such a different show. And, I suppose, Adric was just a kid. As a kid myself, I really liked him. My family called him Andrex, and hated him! I am slightly more sympathetic to their opinion these days, but it's still a blinder of an ending.

Aww. I didn't start till s25, so by the time I watched it, I knew what happened, although I'm not sure I read that Target novelisation - but I started out with Time-Flight's, and they were talking about what happened to Adric at several points in it. So I do find it fascinating to see someone actually come at it genuinely unspoiled and that it really does still pack a punch - poor wee you! ♥

Date: 2024-08-09 08:14 am (UTC)Ha, that's great! I've caught a few of hers - I liked them, but I've got one New Who reactor on the go and can't help watching most of the UgoWatch ones already - but clearly not enough to realise that her being spoiled on the multiple Doctors things didn't mean she knew about regeneration!
ETA: I went back to look at Jules Reacts (the one I've been watching), because I had a feeling she knew maybe even less than that when she watched it, and yes here. (She'd been spoiled that the Doctor changes into a new face somehow, and for when Christopher left, but she had no idea how that happened in the story or who would be the next Doctor. She knew some actors' names, but not which order they came in.)
