I've still not really been around properly, although hopefully that should improve again soon, fingers crossed. Both because I've been quite ill most of this summer, for reasons, but also because the ancient borrowed laptop I was using the last couple of summers to get over the lack of access to my PC now sometimes makes sparks when I plug it in and I feel this is a bad sign in an electrical appliance, so I have been saving to only use at great need. ETA: Not sparks, that was a bad description; a back surge from the charger, I think, and I saw a blue flash. (obv = saprks when typing wildly at night.)

Anyway, the other day when the weather cooled down for a couple, I had a go at the poetry meme, but I was too tired/ill to do the full thing. But since I also did that earlier in the year, I realised between the two I had five efforts. And if I post it, now with new working replacement random poetry site links (!! \o/ !!), maybe it'll spread about the place again, and that'd be nice.

1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

2: Visit this site* to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list them in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.

4: Bravo! Have a cookie.

The first time, I got this set:

1. B7: As he totters o'er the ground (Oliver Wendell Holmes)

He looked harmless—drunk, staggering. The guard lowered his weapon.

"Hello there, my friend." Drink sloshed about in his cup; he thrust it at the guard. "Here—hold this. Thanks—very consi-sid - thingumy—so sorry."

Something hit him; everything faded.

"Nothing personal. Blame Avon. He's the one with the gun."

2. DW: As if to destroy the last vestige (Edgar Lee Masters)

3: OUaT: "Beware the Jabberwock, my son! (Carroll)

"Seriously?" said Emma. Everyone else stared back. Of course they were serious. Of course they meant the actual Jabberwock. She'd met multiple people from Wonderland; why was she even surprised?

She straightened her shoulders, put on the red jacket, and grabbed her sword. That part she knew by heart already.

4: PG: To many-tower'd Camelot (Tennyson)

5. S&S: Whose limbs unburied on the naked shore, (Iliad)

The other day, I had this set, which I really liked, but I had not brain for the full thing, and since the 'flash fic' element is part of the point for me, I didn't come back either time. It did the job of wordage when no other wordage was possible but I wanted to word, and that's what matters. /return of the Meme Rebels

1. Blake's 7: But all great things must be from us removed,

2. Doctor Who: i fear

Her thief fears: goodbyes, silence, death - endings all (make it a good one). Burnt toast (broken hearts), depots (souls who wander must not be lost). Linearity (a problem she can solve). Themself, the monster (loneliness).

She's always here. New friends are old to her; she brings them home yesterday.

3. OUaT: Nights passed by, snowfalls and solstices; (Eugenio Montejo)

She sits in the throne room, encrusted in diamonds of ice set in frosted silver. Waiting, as the year turns in an eternal private winter, for Snow to fall. A sorrowing saint; patience on a monument.

It's a lie, a mask. Underneath it, she burns like the devil's own inferno.

4. S&S: Pale grew thy cheek and cold,

5. Spooks: Thou know'st that this cannot be said (Donne)

She waits with the light on. "Don't work too late," he says.

She leaves with a kiss, stops his mouth. Silence spreads behind her.

Speak, and they're cursed. Green doors and happy endings aren't for them.

A name on a board, work to be done, and everything always left unsaid.

[1] On the Welch Language (Katherine Phillips)
[2] i carry your heart with me (e e cummings)
[3] The Earth Turned to Bring Us Closer (Eugenio Montejo)
[4] When we Two Parted (Byron)
[5] The Flea (John Donne)

(The B7 ones are so often perfect. I mean, honestly, this one didn't even need writing. So I didn't, lol. Although also I couldn't believe when I got that line for Spooks!)

I didn't do any further editing of these, so they're just the raw fruit of the meme, as they should be.

* I found two replacement sites. This one seemed the nearest match to the lost one (although so far it has more of a Byron fixation than an Emily Dickenson one), but this one also works too.

Yikes. Seriously. Please do not get fried by your laptop; that seems even worse than being made sick by your printer.

I like all of the half-drabbles, though.

I saw a blue flash when I switched sockets mid-use, which isn't sparks, but I do not think it is a good thing to mess around with, even given all the safety features in both plugs and home circuits.

I would concur with this assessment. Good luck with the weather and the PC, but also, you know, technology in general.

Today I tried approaching the printer by means of putting earplugs in and also lying down during longer bouts, and I have emerged unscathed with a whole number of pages printed, yay.

w00t! Glad you have a strategy.

Love the B7 one you did write and the other quote does also fit really well!

Sparks are definitely a bad sign with an electrical appliance. Is it at the outlet you’re getting them? Because in my experience that’s often a damaged cable (which might be easier to replace than a laptop, or to troubleshoot if you have a spare or know someone who has a laptop with a similar one)
