Fic-Substitution Meme Answers
Feb. 13th, 2011 07:29 pmSubstitution meme answers. (And, seriously, were you all feeling like being particularly evil the other day? I thought this would result in 'swap X TARDIS team for Y TARDIS team' a lot, not 'swap the character this whole fic is built around for other character'! But I had fun thinking about it & came up with answers over the past few days. Like I warned, though, baring one hasty bit of nonsense, no fic:
daibhid_c suggested meeting the Johnny Depp Willy Wonka (as opposed to, you know, the real one...):
Amelia and the Gigantic Gobstopper
"Okay," said Amelia, and hastily backed away until she was safely behind a hedge. She knew the difference between madmen with boxes and just plain scary madmen with or without boxes, so she found her class again, and shadowed the teacher closely for the rest of the day. She would have asked them to phone the police, but they never believed her about these things, so what would be the point?
derekmetaltron wanted several things, including Jamie playing the Celestial Toymaker's game of Blind Date in This Time Round, and which girl he would choose:
Blind Date
Well, my guess, if it went as smoothly as Leela's didn't (which is unlikely, given the nature of This Time Round), probably Victoria, provided Sam didn't butt in and choose him first.
and this one with Jamie instead of Zoe hanging on for S7:
A Season Seven With Zoe (a story which already has Zoe instead of Liz)
Hmm. I don't know, but a lot more sandwiches would have been consumed and they would definitely have needed the Doctor and the computer to deal with the Inferno project.
pitry wanted Five and Adric in How The West Was Lost, instead of Three and the Brig:
How The West Was Lost
pitry is clearly evil. This whole story is built around the fact that Jon Pertwee was also the sheriff in Carry On Cowboy, and that his daughter in it was played by Angela Douglas (who would later play Doris Lethbridge-Stewart), and when it wasn't about rewriting the plot of that film to accommodate them (and stealing Talbot Rothwell's lines), it was about exploring the friendship between the Doctor and the Brigadier.
So... presumably Tegan and Nyssa have locked them out of the TARDIS, and Adric is mistaken for the Marshall because of his badge for mathematical excellence, and... Well, the Doctor would never let Adric fire a playing card out of his hand, and I somehow don't see Adric pulling off the arrest for cattle-rustling, either. Although my mind boggles at picturing Adric and all the wild west women in the jail. I think I'd have had to resort more to the original plot of the film and let Marshall P Knutt and Annie Oakley rescue the situation...
curuchamion wanted Nancy Blackett to meet the young Brigadier instead of the young Liz:
Let's Pretend
I'm not gong to think about this one because Nancy Blackett and the young Brig... pirates... there's just going to be a really bad eyepatch gag involved, isn't there?
derekmetaltron also wanted A Stitch in Time in the Stone Age:
A Stitch in Time
In the Stone Age. Well, given that everyone at UNIT in these fics has to just behave as always, regardless of the setting, I suppose it'd go something like this:
"Well, Brigadier? I was on the point of inventing fire, and you interrupted me yet again. Can't the Doctor help you?"
"He's off chasing a pink woolly mammoth with Sergeant Benton, I'm afraid. It'll have to be you, Miss Shaw. We've got to get someone on the inside of the tribe on the other side of the mountain."
"You're not expecting me to believe in pink mammoths now, are you?"
"I don't care what you believe, as long as you do your job."
"Oh, all right, but I do wish you'd stop dragging me about by the hair."
"Sorry about that, Miss Shaw, but I'm afraid if one is leader of the tribe certain appearances have to be kept up. Don't worry; we're nearly inside the cave."
"Oh, if you must then, I suppose..."
john_elliott wanted UNIT: Transition with Charley and the Master, instead of Prf. Colby and Colonel Crichton.
Again, this was hard to picture, because the story is about Torchwood having been involved in funding the research in Image and UNIT having to investigate scientific research places in stately homes that blow up in the 1970s, and them not liking each other. If Colby isn't there, then Torchwood have no one to try and get info out of, so = short story! I can only imagine that Charley and the Master would have a walk in the sunshine, possibly annoy someone from TW or UNIT, and go away again.
persiflage_1 wanted Only Visiting This Planet with Martha rather than Liz.
If Janey had gone to Martha, I'm sure she'd have sorted her out, as Martha can save the world single-handed, and has much more sophisticated technology than the Doctor has to hand in the Three-era fic. There might even have been a happy ending...

Date: 2011-02-13 08:07 pm (UTC)As for Charley, given Torchwood's competence I wouldn't be surprised if they decided she was Colby and pulled her in, on the strength of her name having some of the same letters in :-)

Date: 2011-02-13 09:01 pm (UTC)You, madam, are a genius. And John is correct, it IS true that most of your stories (many and varied they are) suit their era and Doctor/Companion set very specifically.
