***
The old-fashioned tea-shop is there for the tourists, but then, thinks Sapphire, that is what they are today.
Steel sits uncomfortably at the small, circular table. He doesn’t drink tea; he doesn’t drink anything, and the surroundings aren’t very him, even if he did.
Sapphire doesn’t precisely fit in, either. She’s chosen a demure suit in powder blue that’s rounded at the edges. She should be unremarkable, but she isn’t; she never is. The older couples around them keep glancing over at her, at both of them.
“We should go back.”
Relax, Steel. The assignment is over. We aren’t needed anywhere else, not yet. It’s not a crime not to return – temporarily, of course. She steals an amused look at him.
He returns a decidedly unamused one, but she knows he doesn’t mean it. He’s eyeing the tea-shop with disfavour, though - its jumble of cheap, flower-patterned china, fake and genuine antiques, and mismatched furniture. Old photographs on the walls, next to paintings that are recent copies of older works. So many potential dangers, all set in a centuries-old building with timber-beams across the ceiling that are older still.
Sapphire puts her hand over his and draws his attention back to her. If he didn’t notice such things, he wouldn’t be Steel – and she loves him both for what he is and what he isn’t.
He catches that thought of hers and raises an eyebrow.
Yes. She smiles. I meant you to hear that.
Steel smiles in return and his wariness lessens. He goes so far as to grudgingly humour her. “And what else do people do on this sort of…?”
“Day trip,” she finishes for him. She plays with his hand, intertwining their fingers. “I thought a walk in the park next.”
He follows her gaze to the window, sees the sun shining out there and they both share an acknowledgement that it’s welcome after the darkness and the horrors of the last assignment – of so many assignments.
“That sounds… acceptable.”
She smiles back, brightly this time, and they both stand together in one smooth movement. Sapphire keeps hold of his hand, keeps him close as they exit the overly quaint café. She leans against him as they pause outside in the doorway and there’s mischief lurking in her eyes. “Now, we should go and feed the ducks.”
Steel turns his head, trying to work out the joke and failing. Ducks?
She laughs. “Yes, ducks. On the duckpond. You’ll see.”

Date: 2012-10-27 11:55 am (UTC)But, you see, Sapphire would pass him a bit of the bread and he would look at it warily for a short while before casting it away. Which might accidentally feed a duck, possibly. Without him having to deign to do such a thing intentionally.
:-D

Date: 2012-10-26 07:18 pm (UTC)This is everything I ever want in S&S fic: mystery, ambiguity, and Sapphire and Steel being adorable together :D

Date: 2012-10-27 11:53 am (UTC)Aw, thank you. Personally, all I ever want in a S&S ficlet is mystery, ambiguity, creepiness, otherness, historical things, crossovers, ALL THE ELEMENTS and Silver, Sapphire and Steel being weirdly adorable together, but it is possible I'm slightly demanding. :-)

Date: 2012-10-27 11:49 am (UTC)Ha. Ahahahaha. That is the plan, yes! :lol: Actually, it's only fair since it was other people's beautiful fanfic crossovers with DW (do you know 'Blue' and 'The Glade'?) that made me have to watch it. It's not hard to find - several people have it on YouTube and it's out on DVD. Some things I like are impossible to find, so that's not too bad. :-)
Duck pond, eh? Watch out for a small, red-headed girl ....
It was just my association with walks in the park - but that bit did occur to me after. Except I can't imagine Sapphire and Steel meeting either Amy or Rory and not trying to do something awful to them. Which doesn't bear thinking about. So I'll trust the Doctor has safely covered their tracks and smoothed out any rough spots so that no Elements will be sent in... *worries*

Date: 2012-10-27 02:45 pm (UTC)Oh, dear. And they're the heroes, eh? Or should I just amend that to "attractive protagonists"?

Date: 2012-10-28 08:20 am (UTC)The first assignment is six episodes. (Ah, is it all edited together on YouTube? That's quite cool, but also kind of a shame because the cliffhangers are a brilliant mix of scary-built-up-climax and ridiculous [THERE IS A LIGHT BLOB ON THE LOOSE!/ EVIL!PILLOW ATTACK!] and also frequently dismissed in two seconds in the next episode. You can probably spot where they are, easily, actually, now I think of it... :-D)
Assignment 1 is definitely the slowest - they started off planning to make it as a children's series and then changed their minds. (Possibly because they actually managed to get David McCallum and Joanna Lumley, or other reasons, I don't know.) But you can tell, can't you? And, yes, Lead! I was so excited the first time to see another Element - I didn't know he was going to turn up. Although deliberately slow is the mood of the whole thing, really.
PS. Assignment lengths:
2 = 8 eps
3 = 6 eps
4 = 4 eps
5 = 6 eps
6 = 4 eps
There really is an evil pillow. I didn't make that up. :-)

Date: 2012-10-29 02:10 pm (UTC)I know, right? And yet the light blobs ended up making me very uneasy - kudos to the producers, eh?
Thanks for the information on each assignment length.
And I just knew you weren't kidding about the evil pillow. Heh.

Date: 2012-10-29 08:45 pm (UTC)They are mostly pretty good about achieving stuff on tuppence. Assignment Three, however, has some definite moments that are up there with the bubblewrap. :-) (The evil pillow is the best one, though. Steel, clearly, is not going to trust pillows again.)

Date: 2012-10-28 11:39 am (UTC)Aw, Steel. I like the way the potential dangers just in an olde worlde tea-shop are mentioned - they really do exist in a very hazardous universe indeed, S&S. I also like the way you depict the relationship between them here - the genuine bond between them even if Steel insists on being a dour old so-and-so and the way Sapphire teases him for it.
