A meme, a meme...
May. 20th, 2013 08:38 pmMeme, stolen from astrogirl2:
I have 217* works archived at AO3. Pick a number from 1 (the most recent) to 217 (the first thing I posted there), and I'll tell you three things I currently like about it.
* No, I don't know how that happened. My drabbles are all posted separately, that's what's done it. Honest. 0_o *scared*
I was going to post other things that I was meant to be posting, but in the meantime, stuff happened that upset me more than it should have done so, meme. :-/

Date: 2013-05-21 08:19 pm (UTC)1. I think it is quite funny, and it's meant to be. (Following a story involving a lot of doubles, the Doctor takes the wrong Romana off with him, leaving the real Romana no choice but to marry a prince and rule the planet.)
2. Romana gets to be fairly awesome.
3. “Oh, I was furious, but that was fifty years ago. I've stitched my way through six tapestries since then."

Date: 2013-05-21 08:23 pm (UTC)#7 is Light Conversation, a House of Eliott Bea/Jack ficlet for the 500 Prompts meme.
1. I achieved the first Bea/Jack fic known to humankind. I don't know why there wasn't any before, because there should have been, but still, mission accomplished.
2. The title, which is a literal description of the v slight ficlet, also colours and darkness, and a play on Night Conversation, which it also is. Um, yeah, never mind.
3. It was difficult to get it to go somewhere, but Bea and Jack were fun to write, and I must do that again sometime.

Date: 2013-05-21 08:29 pm (UTC)#42 is Patterns, a Silver/Steel ficlet I wrote sort of for
1. Well, I wasn't at all sure I could write Silver/Steel, even in this mild way - and I could. So there's that.
2. Silver not being at all bothered by lying on the carpet. I can't help keeping on writing Silver, just because he's so much fun to do for that sort of thing: “Oh,” he said, in mild surprise, but then returned his attention to the source of the problem. Horizontal or vertical was irrelevant. If the thought might have fluttered through his mind that the former was more likely to attract Steel’s attention than the latter, that wasn’t entirely relevant, either.
3. I think I did capture something of their sort of elusive mutual curiosity and fascination for each other. But I don't know, it is very slight. I just like it, I think.

Date: 2013-05-20 08:17 pm (UTC)#99 is Sandminer Nights my Poul/D84 ficlet for
1. That it exists, since I only wrote it because I thought it was a completely impossible prompt and you know where that kind of thinking leads to.
2. I think it was the first time I'd tried writing something where something that's not pr0n at all gets equated with it in some way.
3. I think it did come out slightly disturbing, which was the intention and it's circular. I like my ficlets to be circular.
But, er, yes. Sorry. You like robots, though, don't you?

Date: 2013-05-20 08:39 pm (UTC)1. Kenny and Lynda being Kenny and Lynda? I wrote rather a lot of these (although not all 50), but, still, I love their friendship and the way they are so different but understand each other very well, and can predict what the other will do. (Lynda can put the phone down and know that Kenny, being Kenny, won't be able to help ringing back, because that's how they go. Even when it's the middle of the night on the other side of the world and it's going to cost him.)
2. It's set early S5 and I thought I captured the tone and theme of S5 quite well.
3. And Lynda, counting the cost: “You know, when I became editor I kind of hoped the body count wouldn’t mount up this fast.”
Sorry, probably none of that makes sense without knowing PG! (And I thought you were even going to get a DW one for a minute there.) Still, it's Steven Moffat in a previous life, anyway. ;-)

Boo to stuff. It is unsatisfactory.

Date: 2013-05-21 07:26 pm (UTC)And 111 is Awakenings, probably one of my favourite ficlets, odd as it is. (It's a Sapphire & Steel/DW crossover, sort of not-pr0n between a robot and an Element, which I wrote as a bonus for a prompt on
1. D84's POV (being a robot) was a really different one through which to look at the mysterious nature of Elements. I do feel as if I could have just written this and not anything more for S&S, really.
2. It was actually the first time I'd got even this near to writing a love scene. Naturally it would be a telepathic/technical link between two non-human beings. What else?
3. And D84 using the connection to Silver to understand more about the universe in a way his limitations wouldn't allow.
Basically, it was fun to do at a time when I couldn't write very much, and I'm probably more fond of it than such a slight oddity deserves.

Date: 2013-05-21 07:35 pm (UTC)#35 is New Tricks for Old Dogs (or Five Alternate Universes Where Sandra Pullman Was Always Awesome) , one of my 2012 Yuletide fics, in New Tricks.
1. I loved the prompt (New Tricks AU of any kind) and the image it gave me of the main characters all remaining resolutely and awkwardly themselves in unlikely situations, and I think people got that and were amused by it, so that pleases me.
2. The line in the French Resistance AU which is Jack just quietly not giving up on Sandra, waiting for as long as it takes.
3. The Knights-in-armour bit, because that was where it all started, with Brian and Gerry in rusty armour, and the butterfly conversation.
I should say the ending, really, just because it was such a complete mess and then with some help from

1. I wrote it! When I wrote it in rough and about half a year later when I typed it up were bad times, so it was an achievement.
2. After writing about 30 Press Gang ficlets, I did finally find a reason for including David Collings's character. ;-)
3. It does fill in the obvious gap of "Where's Kenny?" left by the S5 episode it refs (Friendly Fire), which happened due to the actor not being available. But I really don't think it works at all unless you know Friendly Fire and I usually like my fics to at least theoretically stand alone.

Date: 2013-05-21 08:44 pm (UTC)#54 is New Hero, Now Here, a DW/Fire & Hemlock (Diana Wynne Jones) crossover, with Eleven and Polly Whittacker. I wrote it after DWJ's death, but it took me ages to get it actually posted.
1. I would have liked to do a proper S5/Fire & Hemlock fic, but that never happened. However, I got some bits in here: Assistant heroes = companions, because of course they do. And obviously the Doctor is an heroic driver.
2. “Are you a thief, casing the joint?” asked a voice from the side of him suddenly. “You might want to try being a bit less obvious.”
3. I was pleased that I managed to use the "Now Here/Nowhere" variations for the title.
2.

#55 is Love & Science, a series of Doctor Who drabbles about the Doctor and his liking for women of science (or academic women, anyway).
1. They're a set of drabbles, so I like some better than others, but, as a collection, I'm generally pleased with them and with the concept and that when I originally posted them (on Teaspoon) people seemed to really like them, and discussing potential candidates for future drabbles. It was fun.
2. Benny jumping Eight:
“But … you never did this before!”
“You never looked like this before.”
“That’s very shallow.”
“You’re very pretty.”
“I don’t think your husband would -”
“Rat. Left me. Don’t get me started on that.”
He found something at last. “Not in front of the cat!”
3. And not to keep focusing on Eight, but also this bit of Eight/Mary Shelley:
His failings were precisely what he had to offer.
She’d tried the Great Romance as an escape, and found it wanting – shabby, and lacking in idealism and adventure. Poets weren’t ethereal beings and monsters lurked in the hearts of all. She knew that now.
He gave her freedom; a wondrous universe to explore, hand in hand, and he asked nothing else of her battered heart.

So it wasn't anything terrible, I just got stupidly upset over it. Today I am more resigned and okay; I knew I would be.

Date: 2013-05-22 07:38 pm (UTC)Aha, well, yes. The very last fics on my AO3 list are the backdated ones I'm less sure about. Anyway #210 is Promises, a Dungeons & Dragons fic for NYR 2009, which is okay, but I tried to do something with it that I think just ended up making it too terse and not always clear enough. Anyway, things I like...
1. The recipient really liked it, so that was good. (S/he tracked me down and left a lovely comment ages after, one of the nicest comments I'd had.)
2. I was trying to express something of how internal Hank and Sheila are as characters, and I think I did. (But that's also the bit that makes it less clear in places - making Hank always be only "he" to Sheila. Ah well.)
3. I do quite like the different ways the fic relates to the title and the various stated or implicit promises made in it.
(I should go over it again, really, I suppose. It's kind of cute, still, though, maybe!)

Date: 2013-05-22 07:42 pm (UTC)1. Miss Marple beats Dracula, of course. And I got revenge on ITV for patronising Joan Hickson.
2. I think, Miss Marple describing Dracula as follows is my favourite bit (because of course he would remind her of someone): "As it happens, I was reminded very strongly of that unpleasant Mr Alsopp who lived near to the vicarage for a while. He used to be somewhat nocturnal in his habits as well, although for quite different reasons.”
3. Miss Marple dusts Dracula, and then knits to pass the time. Because Miss Marple is awesome. (I may like Miss Marple quite a bit. :-D)
