Fic: Century's End (Poldark)
Jun. 26th, 2013 09:27 amI said you'd soon find out why I'd been thinking about Poldark again. I have no real explanation for this fic, except that a lot of my flist were talking about idfic bingo and I thought that would probably never work out for me (for reasons), but I then also thought that my current fave random generator would give me some completely id-indulging prompts if I put a few random characters I liked in it. And it did. (It really did - I have them printed out so I can laugh at them when I'm down.) However, it also gave me "Ross Poldark - fountain of youth & contemporary AU". The series ended with Ross and Demelza having a conversation about death - Ross finds the idea of losing Demelza through death intolerable, and Demelza tells him you can't live like that, that everybody dies in the end. So... what if somehow Ross got his wish?
Of course, this should be a very exciting story, and it isn't. It goes without saying that it's not also Four Continents Ross and Demelza Had Sex In (though I'm sure they did), because I wrote it. It also doesn't really have Dwight and Caroline beyond a cameo. And historical detail is mostly provided by handwaving, rewatching the end of the series, flicking through one of the books, my vague memories and some hasty Historical dictionary checking and Googling in order to avoid both Boer Wars. (Because there is no way that would go well.) So, anyway, odd fic, but it probably genuinely is also idfic, because I didn't want them to die, either. (It's very sad when watching two people have that conversation and one of them just died in rl. Shouldn't be allowed.)
Century's End (2692 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Poldark - All Media Types, Poldark (1975)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Demelza Carne/Ross Poldark
Characters: Ross Poldark, Demelza Carne, Dwight Enys, Caroline Penvenen

Summary:
Also, to the best of my knowledge, the only Poldark fic out there. (There must be some hidden somewhere, mustn't there?) I probably should one day write a very silly pirate AU where Ross is a Robin Hood type pirate, Demelza is the cabin boy, Dwight the ship's doctor, George the merchant whose ships he robs (and, *cough* George would tell you that's canon, anyway), and Elizabeth would get tied to the mast a lot.

Some strange chance or quirk of fate grants Ross's wish that he and Demelza never be parted by death...

*is still not completely sure*
And while I'm not familiar with Poldark, the fic worked perfectly well without that knowledge.

Or maybe all the Poldark fic is hiding away on an ancient mailing list. Or maybe the fans all just post pics of Ross's boots places, I don't know. (There is a Poldark Appreciation Society. It just apparently doesn't write much fic, though people have made vids.)
