I've come up with a make-icons plan! (Why do I always need a plan/excuse for things I like doing?) Anyway, one of the joys of LJ is there's a comm for everything, even if it's been defunct for five or more years, so... I have themes stolen from icons200, which are alphabetical and in sets of 10, so I just decide on a show/character/pairing for that set, make the 10 icons, and am allowed up to 10 artist's choice on the same subject, and once I get a set, make a post! Simple. (Those are my rules that I made up, btw.)

Not simple - getting used to a new graphics programme. Why is this one superior to the other in nearly all the ways, but it won't do a simple thing like rotate a layer rather than the whole image? (I had to do text on a new image, rotate that and copy it in. Well, I moved the image over actually, it doesn't seem to want to copy, or not to paste it anyway. But I have brushes, so you know... Software being software, basically. Especially, as ever, with me, free/outdated/cheap software being software.)

Anyway, first set will be Poldark, as threatened, but Ross & Demelza only this time. (But I have 19 more sets to go, and I'll definitely do the other characters. I need to screencap some more yet, too.)

Argh, graphics programs. I used the same one for years. I got it free with a printer ages ago, but it was brilliant - so well designed, and it did everything I needed. Then I upgraded to Windows 7, and it ceased to function. I have a different one now, but even though it's a lot more modern, it's just not as good. It's also unnecessarily complicated! Gah.

Good luck with your iconsing, anyway! It's quite fun, isn't it.

My other one is fine for most things, but it won't do a few things I wanted to, hence me downloading an equally outdated Photoshop. So far, Photoshop is winning, but there are some bits where it's just more fiddly or doesn't seem to do a simple thing the other did. But I can simply go back to using the other, or just keep both, so it's not too bad - losing your nice one must have been very annoying!

Yes, I do love icon-making, and I just don't seem to have done any properly for ages.

Yay, Poldark icons! \o/ I do have to say, though, that it's your fault I finally ordered a Poldark DVD. ::wags finger sternly:: I was all stiff-upper-lip and not giving in until you talked about it.

(I'm not actually blaming you. I loved the programme way back when I saw it in re-runs on a cable channel and I've been thinking about getting it for ages.)

I hope you manage to get to grips with your new graphics programme. I hate it when they add a 1001 bells and whistles and you can't figure out how to work anything.

Well, I hope you enjoy the DVDs, then! It's funny - I clicked on the Poldark tag after talking about it again the other day, and found I started off with: "My Mum's forced me to watch her stupid old show by buying it for me, and everyone's very annoying, but, oh dear, now I'm in love with Angharad Rees and Robin Ellis, and there's galloping about on horseback." It grew on me rapidly after that, as you can see. :lol:

So, actually, blame my Mum!!

Well, I'm the one who downloaded it, and I can still just go back to the other one, and get GIMP for extra brushes, so it's not too bad. I'm hoping, though, I can get used to this one, which is mostly better, and then get rid of the old one, but we'll see. When I first tried it the other day, I thought I'd never be able to do anything, but I've made quite a few icons with it already! ;-)

Aha! ::sends slightly dark look in Lost Spook's Mum's direction:: Not that I know which direction she's in, so just picture me turning around like a lighthouse while sending out a slightly dark look.

Spooky! I was thinking of pinching themes from 20in20 and doing the icons in my own time. Then I made screencaps of Anneke Wills Avenger's episode and decided I'd be happy with making them look less cruddy, never mind anything else.

I really enjoyed making icons for every20in20, but it stopped and I have never quite been able to find another one that suits me as well, I don't know why. I did icons100 before - that was very nice, and while it did have a deadline, I think it doesn't at the moment, as the mod is on hiatus. However, I want to do a variety of things at the moment, so I decided not to put another claim in there.

Ha, crappy screencaps of old TV are so hard to make nice! I have made icons of so much old TV of varying kinds, that I actually have problems adjusting when I icon shiny new stuff. (Also icon tutorials for "how to improve your screen caps" are useless to me, since they never seem to imagine I might have a blurry lined screencap of something from 1970 to try and salvage.)

Well, whatever you do, have fun, and I'll look forward to seeing the results!

My problem is people in screencaps for old TV look grey and I end up over TOWIE-ing them:$ I'm hoping to break the habit by doing some b/w icons.

What's annoying about new stuff is the images still need adjusting!
