*pounces on "Confound their politics"* (I have no idea what the context was where you got it from, but where I know it from is an odd bit of early Canadian Mounted Police history - it was sung to the tune of God Save the Queen by the very first group of Mounted Police, who got recruited in Quebec and sent off on a woefully under-prepared wagon-train-type expedition to the Pacific coast. Somehow they all wound up surviving, so I consider it rather a lucky song. XD "Confound their politics, frustrate their knavish tricks, get us out of this bloody fix - God save all here!" Also fun to hum under your breath and sound way less dissatisfied with your situation than you are. ;P)

:lol: That is because it is actually from the official national anthem (well, as official as it gets because God Save The Queen isn't official and has several variations and things). It's just that for some reason (lol) we don't tend to sing this verse so much any more:


O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall:
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish[26] tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix:
God save us all.

So your mounties were just doing the traditional thing of altering the existing lyrics a bit. In context here, Sir John Wilder is being pulled down by his enemies on all sides, has come up with a plan to put himself back on top, and wanted his secretary to find him the lyrics for that rarely-sung verse, which she does.

These are terrific. I love the quote in #7, it's a classic. #25 is good too. Shades of "The West Wing". You always do the photo ones well, and there's some very striking ones here - particularly of Barbary Murray and Rosemary Leach. You've chosen some great quotes too. Love #49 and #37. #48 made me laugh. Nothing changes! #7 is my favourite though. It's so brilliantly sharp.

Thanks! It's just like this most of the time; I've just got too tired to sit there with a pen and notebook while I watch, but clearly one day I'll have to rewatch and take down much more! 48 is pretty much my opinion of most gov'ts, so it made me grin.

Sorry to point this out, but you've mispelt "overwrought" on #40! (You've got an "a" for the second "o"!)

/o\ Oh, this is why I shouldn't do text icons when I don't feel well, but I couldn't resist. I'll make another at some point, but in the meantime, let's pretend is deliberate, because I wouldn't trust Ken Bligh to spell overwrought correctly either.

What a lovely serene face Barbara Murray has, you've captured some real mysterious enigmatic expressions. Who were the Greek goddesses you had to go to the temple and sacrifice for a divination from, cant' think what I'm after? That's what she looks like.

Also love the text ones, especially 'I know when I'm beaten etc', heh. Whipping that one!

Aw, thanks. And do you mean a Sibyl?? My Greek mythology isn't up to all that much, really. She really is gorgeous, yes, although in action, she's entirely liable to pull faces rather than look enigmatic, but I see no problem with that. :-)
