Random is as random does...
Jun. 7th, 2015 08:07 pmSo yesterday I ended up playing with the Unconventional Courtship Generator again, and made a post of summaries that amused me (as I do). But then got embarrassed about posting nonsense all the time (as I do), although of course, that was silly of me, because is that not what LJ is for? Anyway, slight repost; will promise faithfully not to delete this time. (Thanks, Pers, btw. ♥)

Her mission: Pose as an oil tycoon in order to safeguard the ultraprickly PR prince, Gene Hunt. Her top priority: Not to lose her heart to the sassy city boy.
What started as threats had escalated into a kidnapping attempt — and Gene was scared. But he refused to be smooth-talked into having a bodyguard cramp his style. Little did he know that Jo was assigned his protector. But would he be more shocked by her secret, or that he had done the unthinkable and fallen in love with...a cowgirl?
212) Harvest Moon by Robyn Carr
Rising sous-chef River Song's sudden collapse at work is a wake-up call.
Disillusioned and burned out, she's retreated to her brother John Steed's house in Virgin River to rest and reevaluate. Puttering in John's garden and cooking with his heirloom vegetables is wonderful, but Virgin River is a far cry from San Francisco. River's starting to feel a little too unmotivated. . . until she meets Donna Noble.
The beautiful widow looks more like a lumberjack than a sophisticated screenwriter — a combination River finds irresistible. But less appealing is Donna's rebellious stepdaughter, Amy Pond. She's the reason they moved from L. A., but Amy's finding plenty of trouble even in Virgin River.
River's never fallen for a gal with such serious baggage, but some things are worth fighting for. Besides, a bratty teenager can't be any worse than a histrionic chef. . . right?
388) Highwayman Husband - Helen Dickson

The woman who is now her "widower"'s betrothed. Will Charley prove that Romana is no lady, and get back in her husband's good graces — and back into his heart?
322) The Ice Prince - Sandra Marton
Too hot to handle? Prince Kryten bears his title reluctantly, and wears his icy exterior like a suit of armour that no opponent can penetrate. Except Rumplestiltskin. He isn’t any ordinary adversary, he’s a high-flying, straight-talking lawyer in a no-nonsense suit and killer stilettos — conflicting signals that perplex, frustrate and attract Kryten all at the same time. Whilst they’re at odds in business, in the bedroom Kryten’s desire for Rumplestiltskin has the power to melt his defences — the temptation to play with fire is overwhelming.
108) Playing the Dutiful Wife- Carol Marinelli
‘We have made an application on behalf of Rose Tyler to exercise her conjugal rights...' Learning that the wife he’s tried to forget has spent the past year falsely imprisoned in Brazil and needs him to visit her is the last thing Kerr Avon wants. But he will play his part in exchange for Rose's signature on the divorce papers! Except he hasn't bargained on their mind-blowing connection being as undeniable as ever. Last time it led usually sensible Kerr into a Las Vegas wedding chapel. This time the consequence of giving in to their chemistry will bind him to Rose for ever...
76) Her Man Upstairs by Dixie Browning
A sex god in his bedroom! Hiring a centrefold stud to remodel his home was crazy. It made perfect sense for him to move in so he could work days and nights.
210) Return to Pelican Inn by Dana Durgin
His design scheme didn't include her!
Struggling interior designer Killian Jones and his twin sister, Servalan, are bent on transforming the timeworn Pelican Inn into the jewel of the California coast, even if it kills them. And it will kill Killian if they fail. Their business, and his future, depend on winning the Great Escapes Magazine design contest that lured them back to the town where some of his best— and worst— memories were forged. Memories like those of Sarah Jane Smith, the innkeeper's niece, his high school heartthrob turned humiliator, now infiltrating herself into every aspect of the project. Is she purposely frustrating his efforts? Behind that killer smile is she carrying a grudge… or a torch?
284) Undercover Wife by Debra Webb
Specialist Kryten was dedicated to duty — the mission always top priority — and he'd do anything to carry out an assignment. Even if it meant posing as the unthinkable: husband to the newly 'recruited' Adric....
He'd shown up in the middle of the night and offered Adric his freedom if he'd pose as his husband to catch an insidious drug lord/arms dealer. Except, given the compromising position he found himself in as victim of a frame-up, Adric was totally at the mercy of his 'guardian' as an untrained, stand-in agent. All he had to do was assume someone else's identity, learn the ins and outs of weaponry and share a bed with his dangerously attractive 'husband', Kryten. And if he came out of this with his life intact, he'd surely lose his heart in the process!
326) A Very Private Revenge - Helen Brooks

388) Highwayman Husband - Helen Dickson
Her Wife Was Engaged to Her Foulest Enemy…
Held at gunpoint by a highwaywoman, Barbara Wright is shocked to discover that the charming masked stranger is none other than her wife — believed to have been killed by pirates two years ago, only days after their wedding. Languishing in a French prison, Victoria Waterfield has dreamed of returning home to her young wife — and of taking revenge on Ace McShane, the woman who separated them. The woman who is now her "widow"'s betrothed. Will Victoria prove that Ace is no lady, and get back in her wife's good graces — and back into her heart?
397) Cavanaugh Strong - Marie Ferrarella
Aurora’s finest are back in action!
Why are too many healthy pensioners dying in nursing homes? Vice detective Cathy Gale can’t let the mystery go. Though she has no business working on a homicide case, the love-shy single mum draws partner the Tenth Doctor into her rogue investigation. He’s a notorious player she thoroughly disdains – and the feeling’s mutual. Ten considers Cathy too strait-laced for his taste. But as they uncover the shocking scandal behind the mysterious deaths, the pair become closer and passionately in sync.
With time running out, Cathy and Ten must stop the next murder in Aurora or die trying.
221) The Virgin Secretary's Impossible Boss by Carole Mortimer
Harry Sullivan's masculine aura is a little too much for his sensible, bespectacled PA Holly. He makes her heart beat quite erratically! And the last thing Holly expects is to have to spend a weekend alone with her wild, irrepressible boss. . .
Billionaire Harry loves a challenge, and relishes the chance to undo Miss Prim and Proper's buttoned-up exterior. It only takes one snowbound Scottish night to ignite the flames of the devilishly handsome businessman's desire. . . With sparks flying, how can Holly resist?
180) A Question of Honor by Mary Anne Wilson
Trusting him is easy. Telling him is impossible.
Lucie Miller needs to disappear. And Wolf Lake, New Mexico, seems as good a place as any. Just to hole up for a few days and rest her road-weary nerves before making her way to Colorado… and then… who knows? Her only destination is away. As far away from Chicago as she can get.
But lying low in Wolf Lake is impossible. She’s attracting too much attention. Particularly from Detective the Fifth Doctor, the best-looking son of the town’s most prominent family. The kind of man she could imagine a life with, if hers weren’t such chaos. The kind of man who could turn her in…if she doesn’t get out soon!
Also, sometimes the best thing is just the odd sentence like: Given the choice, John Steed would prefer to remain tied to his desk...
Undercover cowgirl Jo Grant annoying Gene Hunt is pretty awesome, though.
Talking of random generators, I've been sad a while that the lovely Genre Mixer one (the one that was eerily sentient) has gone. Ah well, I got about 40 S&S fics out of it while it lived, plus a few other random things. I did leave a note on the maker's Dreamwidth to say I was missing it as nicely as possible, but I suspect if it were easy to put back up somewhere, it wouldn't be gone, so mostly I just thanked them again. Still. :-/

Date: 2015-06-07 08:27 pm (UTC)And these are still entertaining, when I am in the mood for nonsense. Which I am. And these are even more entertaining than usual!
I would think Seven would find Barbara not recognizing him entirely understandable, really. But I'm boggling at the idea of describing the First Doctor as a "mousy innocent."
Cora's going to be pissed when she finds out her prince isn't really a prince. Again.
If anybody is going to rise from the grave to kick ass, it's probably going to be Leela.
I can understand why Kryten is perplexed by Rumplestiltskin's stilettos. I am having much the same reaction, myself. I've also never heard anyone call him "straight-talking" before.
Avon/Rose may be the worst pairing ever.
And I really, really want to hear Jo Grant's attempt at a Texas drawl, especially if it's used in the service of playing bodyguard to Gene Hunt, because his reaction to that would be hilarious. But what idiot put Gene in charge of PR?!
no subject
Date: 2015-06-08 04:41 pm (UTC)And, hey, never mind the stilettos, it knew he should be a lawyer and that Kryten has an armour-plated exterior!
Avon/Rose may be the worst pairing ever.
So much so, it's kind of beautiful. I'm not surprised they're getting a divorce.
And I really, really want to hear Jo Grant's attempt at a Texas drawl, especially if it's used in the service of playing bodyguard to Gene Hunt, because his reaction to that would be hilarious. But what idiot put Gene in charge of PR?!
I think at least two of these are things where both characters must actually be undercover in ill-advised disguises spying on the other agent instead of the villain. (Probably Sam tyler told Gene he couldn't do PR and that was that.) Cowgirl!Jo Undercover is an adorable idea. This one should so be a thing. I can't do it, though, I can't write Gene!

Date: 2015-06-08 08:56 pm (UTC)I'm not capable of writing it, either, alas, but someone should really, really do the Jo Grant and Gene fic. It is a thing I did not know until now that the world needs. :)
Genre Mixer
Date: 2015-06-07 10:13 pm (UTC)This is a rush job, but see how it grabs you.
Features it would be nice to have at some point:
You can bookmark cast lists, too.
ETA: OK, the thing now contains four trope lists. Since one of them was from kink_bingo, I also added a rudimentary NSFW filter.
Re: Genre Mixer
Date: 2015-06-08 04:19 pm (UTC)I had rather a lot of prompts from the original printed out, so have made a lists of those that were included (& then tried to take out most of the duplicates from the bingo lists, but I think I failed) here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PZiy0CiKiKjpofjfxQ6qm1UpqiwkIVQ8eldFRUCHCrw/edit?usp=sharing
Then after playing it, I went through hc_bingo, trope_bingo & cotton candy & made modified lists, because I don't think all the h/c prompts are really appropriate, or they also need to go behind the filter, and also the cotton candy ones are nice, but are prompts rather than tropes so stripped them down to things that were tropes or actions or I dunno, things that just felt right (I'm always highly scientific). Feel free to ignore me, though I did try not to just delete things I don't like. Apart from "feet". Do Not Want! Also, with the layout & options for 3 tropes/genres/prompts, I altered some of the prompts to hopefully look less confusing: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jhddPB2h0xLkj-vmuOpoXPUWSCnS592MzT5Qb00iyDE/edit?usp=sharing
I hope that is useful and not too annoying of me? Or too fiddly to add.
Also, of course, once it is much less beta-ish, some credits to the original maker, and the bingos for the lists would be needed.
In short, this is me being v pleased! I spent all my computer time today so far going through those lists, okay. ;-)
It was still pretty fun to play around with, though!
I don't know if eerie sentience is achievable. That remains to be seen! (The other one just seemed to have this knack of producing fandom apt prompts, but obviously probably not really.)
Re: Genre Mixer
Date: 2015-06-08 08:57 pm (UTC)- The first document should be a separate list in the generator?
- The second document should be... one list? Or three replacing the existing hc_bingo, cotton_candy and trope_bingo lists?
- Have you got a link so that I can credit the creator of the original?
Oh, and this came up while testing:
Sapphire / Silver / Steel - sharing a bed & talking appliance sidekick
S/S/S and Talkie Toaster. The world is not yet ready.
Re: Genre Mixer
Date: 2015-06-08 09:02 pm (UTC)The second doc is, yes, to replace the existing three sets, if you agree with my omissions. (In particular, as it is, the h/c prompts are making the results feel like some disturbing mass accident; I think some of the current trope_bingo list is seriously weird, even for a person who likes random stuff, and some of the cotton candy ones were a little too vague in context, but that one may just be me. YMMV, as they say!). I hadn't looked at the kink-bingo ones, because I'm hardly the expert!

Ha, S&S and Talkie Toaster! That is pretty awesome.
Re: Genre Mixer
Date: 2015-06-08 10:30 pm (UTC)Re: Genre Mixer
Date: 2015-06-09 08:39 pm (UTC)That does feel slightly less like the aftermath of a massacre, which is good. I think that was slightly disconcerting in a pairing generator!
Interestingly, if you narrow it down to only the genremixer list, it stills shows some signs of being psychic. It instantly gave me this, which is a thing that I have as a WIP somewhere:
Henry / Elizabeth - vampires & crack fic
:-D
Re: Genre Mixer
Date: 2015-06-09 09:59 pm (UTC)Random (single), which is what it did before, picks a list at random and all tropes in a prompt come from the same list.
Random (mixed) can take each trope from a different list. Leading to things like
Flashheart / Avon / Servalan - forced to marry & bad boys
Georgina Jones / Sarah Jane Smith - love spell gone wrong & playing hard to get & forced marriage
