Yet more random
Nov. 7th, 2015 01:42 pm1. I have been watching all the usual challenges go up over at
yuletide, waiting for Some Day My Fic Will Come, because this year my Enemy at the Door request would qualify, but alas, Some Day My Fic Will Come has not come and my faithfulness will only be rewarded if some day my fic does come without the help of Some Day My Fic Will Come.
2. In other Yuletide-related silliness, last time I made my Shadow of the Tower request, I went on about the DIY map-making in the show, but I decided to be sensible and leave it at pantomime lions and cardboard spaceships this year. However, I did make a small gif-set on Tumblr and I'm not the only one who was amused by it, most especially Henry's epic food battle map in ep9. (I think there's another instance, but I can't remember.) I don't know why it happens; probably just because the director is Prudence Fitzgerald aka the director who is fine with showing the studio floor, the studio backdrop, having random CSO, super-close-close-ups of James Maxwell and David Collings and probably other people, vaseline on the lens, people talking to camera and whatever else she feels like. (Also, btw, SotT is remarkable because for some reason in 1972 at the BBC, 10 out of the 13 eps were directed by women. It also had a female script editor, a female historical researcher and 1 female writer (2 eps). I don't know why or how, but it's a thing. As is Tudor DIY-map-making.
3. In not entirely unrelated news, I am actually writing up the story where Ace goes on a 'date' with Henry VII that came from this meme. Sadly, though, I am not yet writing the one where Twelve and Cora Mills are buddy cops, nor am I writing the one where Twelve and Henry VII have to run a coffee shop together. Those are still free to a good home if anyone wants to win the internet.
4. And now I had better go, or my mushroom soup I'm making will pay the price for me talking about 1970s telly (again).

"waiting for Some Day My Fic Will Come... but alas, Some Day My Fic Will Come has not come and my faithfulness will only be rewarded if some day my fic does come without the help of Some Day My Fic Will Come."
I didn't understand a word of that, not being involved in the challenge part of Yuletide at all, but it amused me anyway. :D Honestly it rather reminded me of Piglet in the Heffalump trap, "waiting for my ho-ho to come-come". *is easily amused by funny-sounding wordplay* ;-)

Date: 2015-11-07 05:30 pm (UTC)And Some Day My Fic Will Come is a challenge to fill a request someone's been asking for for three years or more. I finally qualified and it's nowhere to be seen! :-D

Date: 2015-11-07 03:06 pm (UTC)Oh my. But I look forward to read it nevertheless.
Hope the soup was tasty.

Date: 2015-11-07 03:14 pm (UTC)Lol. Henry probably made the map so Stanley didn't mention his son was being held by Richard III again - we know! Extreme close-ups, talking to camera, baggy backcloths it's all good:D But better on a TV the size of an old one; it gets a tad disconcerting on a "big" modern one.
I hope the mushroom soup survives the deadly threat of old TV;p

Date: 2015-11-07 05:33 pm (UTC)My TV I watch on is mostly pretty small, but I think some of it still wants to be smaller yet. Or in black and white and a little bit fuzzy...
It did. :-)

Date: 2015-11-07 03:50 pm (UTC)I have my suspicions that Twelve would actually enjoy running a coffee shop with Henry VII. My brain is giving me fierce glares for even considering the idea, but it's definitely a theory. Mind you, I pity the clientele, as they'd be sure to be ranted at, and would probably have to deal with The Guitar.
Possibly Twelve was an influence on Henry VIII? Perhaps Greensleeves was originally supposed to be played on electric guitar? It's a theory...

Date: 2015-11-08 07:32 pm (UTC)Re:
Date: 2015-11-08 08:37 pm (UTC)My letter is here, and my main plea is for any fic about Dr Martel & Major Richter and their not-a-friendship, anything but very especially if it is set post-canon (because it didn't get finished) or a meeting post war.
But basically I want lots of impossible things, like:
S3: the novel.
Helen post-series.
Betty, post-series.
Clare, post series
... all right, I just want to know what happened to everyone.
Also, Anna Richter sounds cool. Tell me more!
Freidel & Richter friendship.
Reinicke actually spends his whole time speaking French to all the Islanders in order to piss them off, because.
Olive's development across the series.
I tend not to be v slashy (and never explicit) but slashy backstory for the two brother-in-law Generals (James Maxwell and Joss Ackland) who go all Julius Caesar while being DOOMED in ep 10.
Any scenes in which all the German officers are politicking/scheming/saving Richter.
Kluge solves mysteries! (Nobody else wants him to or appreciates it, but he does. Doggedly.)
... so, um, yep, I want all the things. I did write a couple of fics myself, but it's always so much easier to write an epic Yuletide letter and wish really hard, isn't it? (But, as to the reverse, should you also enjoy it, I don't have to be poked very hard into writing something for it myself, either. I WAS ASKED. IT WAS MY DUTY!! Whereas until recently, it's just been a sure way not to be read.)
But, basically, if watching it ever makes your fic writing bone itch over anything at all, I am probably going to be happy to read the result. But, don't worry - I don't expect that! As long as you enjoy watching it (or at least forgive me for leading you up the garden path if you hate it)>

Hee, no-one could accuse you of being short of story prompts, which always helps! I'll watch with those ideas in mind. Some of them look right up my street. It'll take a while to get through the series – I'm getting over eleven hours of jet-lag and keep waking up wondering where on Earth I am - but judging from your write-ups, I'll enjoy it.
I've never been to the Channel Islands, unfortunately, so can't get the real spirit of place, but perhaps something will shake itself loose? So many fics I want to write, so little brain...

Date: 2015-11-09 02:18 pm (UTC)Aw, I hope you get through the jet-lag soon. The penalties of travelling, especially when not well! :-/
I've never been either, but it helps that they actually filmed there & (as far as I can tell from reading round the subject) seem to have been pretty spot on with the research. In 1980 it was still a potentially sensitive subject with plenty of people still living who remembered what had happened, so they had to be, I suppose.
