Drabble: Friendly Warning

Last night's DW made me write a drabble. Amazing! (It was v good. I loved it. And, oh, I love Clara. ♥ If you don't, I don't need to know about it here. Thank you.)


Friendly Warning
Drabble. Ian Chesterton, Twelfth Doctor. Spoilers for Face the Raven. It is possibly a mean drabble, but it was a thing I thought of this morning.


“It’s not that Barbara and I aren’t pleased to see you, Doctor,” said Ian. “You know you’re always welcome here.”

“But? I can hear there is one. Out with it, Chesterfield!”

“It’s probably best if you avoid the school from now on.”

The Doctor raised an eyebrow and verged on glaring. “Oh? Going to bring it up before the Board of Governors, are we? Aliens at school playing havoc with exam results?”

“No,” said Ian, and gave him a long look before replying. “I just don’t think that Coal Hill can afford to lose any more good teachers, do you?”

Aw. *pets* You can also imagine Ian and Babs giving the Doctor some much needed, sensible comfort at this point. But I only had room for a drabble, especially this far before the finale!

And I would suspect we'll see something more of her in these last couple of episodes, but as with Danny last year, or a Clara splinter or memory or projection - but it is DW, and you never know. Jenna's definitely left, though, so I think I'm probably safe on assuming she doesn't happily go back to Coal Hill. But it was too good an exit - I hope they don't take it back for real.

It was a good way to write her out, certainly. I also liked what I thought might be her exit back in the last Christmas special, when the Doctor visited her as an old woman, but they went back on that. That's the problem with the modern show - they always seem to be bringing dead people back, or pressing reset buttons. You never know when something is for real!

I believe the thing with the Christmas one was that Jenna made a last minute decision to stay, whereas this time she's definitely moving onto something else. But we'll see! You can't quite trust them, can you? I do think we'll get some kind of faux Clara - spirit, illusion, splinter, whatever before we're done, though.

I loved this episode and I love Clara, and I love that your two lines of dialogue for the Doctor sound so much like One and Twelve simultaneously.
EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL AND EVERYTHING HURTS.

And I'll be a bit put out if we don't get an Ian and Barbara cameo before we leave Coal Hill School behind again, tbh, but maybe my priorities are a bit skewed.

An Ian cameo would be very nice, but I don't know if it will happen. I kind of suspect that the moment may have passed, but I hope I'm wrong. (A Barbara cameo, saving namechecks, sadly, is no longer possible. :-/)

:( Damn it, mortality, why do you have to spoil all my cameo hopes?

I just started S3, which is unfortunately shaping up to be a plain of ashes, with a bunch of lost episodes in a row. At least s2 was ALMOST complete and really excellent! I LOVED The Chase, even though it meant saying goodbye to Ian and Barbara. They are so happy to be back in London that I (almost) don't mind!

And The Time Meddler, the last serial of Season Two, is so, so good. The Doctor meets a slightly less scrupulous and better-equipped time traveler and has to prevent him from shooting some Vikings with an atomic canon! It's unmitigated delight.

I am a little unhappy about all the destroyed serials I'm in the middle of, because William Hartnell just keeps getting better and I'm mad that I won't have more of his facial expressions to enjoy before he gets replaced. Oh well.

Yes, sadly Jacqueline Hill died relatively young - about 20 years ago now. :-( William Russell just had a birthday and is 91 or something and still with us, though.

I'm glad you enjoyed The Chase! It's so random, I love it & very self-indulgent, but mostly in a good way when we're about to lose Ian and Barbara. And I can at least now rec you this lovely Barbara vid, if you haven't already seen it:
