Well, they're both adapted from Winston Graham's book series, so they have the same overall story. In some ways, the new one is slightly more faithful to the novels in specific plot elements while the 1970s one has more of the spirit of the books overall.

The big difference is that 2015 seems to want to make Ross the romantic hero of its story (and they want it to be a romantic story primarily), whereas 1975 (and the books) is a story about a whole lot of characters of all classes, the main one being Ross who is both sympathetic and extremely flawed. (WG based him on the idea of equating this 18th C ex-soldier with returning RAF pilots from WWII - that he's fundamentally damaged and addicted to danger, effectively.) It's nice to have both, although I prefer the 1970s version, as the new one has really failed on some of the other main and minor characters - Francis, George, Prudie, and Keren in particular have been especially short-changed so far.

It's really good, but it's classic cardboard telly and the first episode really is a bit of mess, though it's great non-stop after that. The women are all 1970s-fierce, though. Even Verity says, "I used to be shy!" instead of still being shy. But I like that. But if you're enjoying the story and the characters, both the books and the original TV series are both actually very good if you want more - it's going to take the 2015 series a long time to get up to The Angry Tide!

Proper Poldark! Not that I've seen either, but the original is definitely prettier - for all that we keep being told we're all in love with the shirtless wonder.

Nice work. I particularly like the second of your alternates. And that's Dear John in "Hate", isn't it? Ralph Bates. Poor fellow - his wife leaves him, and he gets stuck in a stripy jacket getting his throat cut by a bloke with unfortunate hair. Life is tough in Ye Olde BBC.

(I'm sure he doesn't really get his throat cut, as exciting things like that don't happen in "Poldark", but it looks like it there.)

:lol: Poldark has lots of exciting things happen, although Ralph Bates doesn't get his throat cut at that point - he and Ross have a brilliantly pathetic fight in a pub.

But seriously, Poldark has duels and mining and jailbreaks and excursions to Revolutionary France (to do another jailbreak there), and smugglers and drownings and exploding mines and houses burning down. It's not yr Jane Austen sort of thing. Modern Poldark would rather like to pretend it is, but even it can't keep some of the action out.

Mind, 1975 Poldark also has disturbing sexual abuser vicar Christopher Biggins, so there are arguments for avoiding it. But only in S2.

ETA: Also, ha, Ralph Bates was in Dear John? I watched that years ago and I never twigged, but now that you say it, I can see it. I had a feeling I must know him from somewhere. (Don't feel sorry for him; he's probably just been up to no good undermining people's copper mines or sinking their ships or stealing their women or something.)

Very nice, very nice indeed. And Ralph Bates certainly didn't help tone down my inappropriate sympathy for George Warleggan. Mind you, I'm pretty sure that Graham liked him too, for certain values of like, so there you go.

Thank you! :-) And I'm sure we are supposed to have some sympathy for George - he can be terrible, but he's had to fight so hard to get all the things that Ross keeps just rejecting and then despising him for wanting.
