Poetry Meme

I decided my writing gears needed a bit of a kick start and hunted out the tried and tested poetry meme. The quotes were especially random this time, but it still worked:

1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

2: Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list 'em in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting - make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.

4: Bravo! Have a cookie.

1. Adam Adamant Lives!: But often they would sharply say, (Silence, Robert Service)

“You, Miss Jones, will not be going anywhere,” Adam said. “I will commence investigations at the crayon factory – alone!”

Why must he always tell her off? Georgie wondered, pulling a face – and counting the seconds before following him in merry disobedience. As if that was going to stop her anyway…

2. Doctor Who: If you set him on a mouse then he only wants a rat, (TS Eliot, The Rum Tum Tugger)

“Are you sure,” said Romana, “it’s K9 being difficult? Is he even programmed to hunt mice? I thought he was rather more sophisticated.”

“Sophisticated, tchah! I’ve seen better mousing techniques from an old tabby – stuffed and mounted!”

“Doctor, there shouldn’t be mice in here!”

“Tell that to them, not me!”

3. Press Gang: In rosy youth, he cast away (For Meng Hao-Jan, Li Po)

“It’s the worst, Sarah. To think that you had it and then you lost it – just like that. Of course, I was young – I hardly knew what I was doing –”

“Colin,” said Sarah, “most people don’t spend this long grieving over 50p they dropped seven years ago.”

“Heartless bastards!”

4. Sapphire and Steel: Or how comes it that my exceeding heat (Sonnet 30: Fire and Ice, Edmund Spenser)

“Silver, stop meddling with that – focus on the time break!”

“Don’t be silly, Steel. Can’t have you staying as an icicle.”

Fire burst out from the heating pipes beside Steel.

“Silver,” said Sapphire, surveying Steel – now no longer shivering but decidedly singed at the edges, “you overdid it.”

“As usual!”

5. Sherlock Holmes: while on spotted branch (Prospect, Sylvia Plath)

“Holmes,” said Watson, after a while. “Would it be too much to ask what we’re doing in this tree? Not that I mind, naturally.”

Holmes glared outwards. “At this moment, Watson – yes! I am still awaiting Developments.”

“Oh,” said Watson, and hoped fervently they would be down before supper time.

(By the latter you can probably tell that I continued to enjoy the 1965 BBC Sherlock Holmes very much.)

Very good.

I've a feeling I'd fail miserably at the 50 word limit imposed in this.

No, wait, I KNOW I'd fail!

Yes true. I am very bad at writing drabbles, my ideas run away with me.

ETA: What are you supposed to do, though, if the poem's only 4 lines long? (Hello, Phillip Larkin, you scoundrel, you!)

LOL I like the poem as a prompt, though, so I might go with it anyway, esp as I'm already trashing the meme by ignoring the word limit AND only using one fandom!

*giggles* Can you just imagine how busy the meme police would be if they did exist?!

Holmes is up one tree, Moriarty is up another. Unless they're going to throw sandwiches at one another, I don't see much happening before suppertime.

Off-topic, but do you have any good resources for investigating what old TV is still extant and what isn't?

I'm so tempted to do this... and remove that sodding word limit. Why not...

LOL I always hate 'write in 50 words' NO. I refuse to squish the muse.

Plus, the couples I write for tend to be... very chatty.

Dang, it would take me five months to write half drabbles that good.

I am excited at the prospect of more ye olde Holmes:)

I avoid these problems by forgetting meme instructions when I step away from the computer;p I may use the meme for myself as an exercise to get my brain going for Yuletide.

Brilliant stuff. Loved the DW and S&S ones.

Incidentally, has anyone ever done this meme and not got a poem by Robert Service? There are a number of poets who crop up pretty regularly when you hit the random button, but Service seems to be the most ubiquitous.

Thanks for sharing this, I also participated and had real fun (I got Emily Dickinson three times xD)

And though I don't know the fandoms you chose, I enjoyed reading your half drabbles :D

1. Lol, Georgie seems to be a fun character ^^ At least you described her that way :D

2. “Tell that to them, not me!” Haha, that's amazing xDD

3. I barely understood any reference in this, but the last line made me grin once more. I really like your style ^^

4. Oh boy, poor Steel xDDD

5. And of course I know the characters of Holmes and Watson, and THIS I can really imagine xD

Very well done!

She is... also love the 'I can panic and rescue myself because I'm a woman' thing she does. She freaks, screams... then attacks the nasty person anyway.
