For the Talking Meme: elen_nare asked: Which fictional universe(s) would you most like to live in?

I'm fascinated by the Blake's 7 universe maybe more than all my other fictional universes, but I certainly would not want to live in it. So, out of the things that immediately came to mind, I decided that the Once Upon a Time universe would be a good one. I mean, yes, it's full of villains and ogres and dragons, but as far as I can see, if you live in Storybrooke as a minor character, you get to watch the heroes chase the dragons down the High Street while you just carry on making a Heritage Trail and assume that it will all be okay in the end, because it generally is. (It is a universe where goodness actually does pay. I'm not sure I know any others.)

Since Belle seems to be doing two jobs at once, I'm sure I could get a job as children's/assistant librarian without much trouble (and it's not even as if there's a dragon in the cellar any more), although I suspect presenting budget requests to the Mayor would be an ordeal, no matter how reformed she is these days. I'm not sure how book ordering would work, either, and they don't seem to have had any software updates anywhere in the town since about 1995, but every job has its little hang-ups. And I bet Snow would be amenable to school visits to the library, which is always a plus.

But importantly, if I'm going to live in another universe, it should be one where there's magic and they can make me better. Magic always comes with a price, but healing magic seems to be definitely in the good category in general, so I think it would be worth the risk.

And apart from the obligatory yearly Curse and related amnesia, it's a protected little bubble of a place to live in - and if I don't like it, I can get to any other fictional universe I want from there! All I need is a magic bean, or an airship, or a mermaid, or a pirate ship, or that Fairy Bus To/From the Land With No Magic. (It's really easy, as long as you're not Rumplestiltskin.)

I'm not sure what would happen if I carelessly wrote fic while I was there, though. I might need to chat to Henry before I finalise any arrangements to move in...

I think OUaT is a good choice - not just lots of fun fairytale stuff, but with modern life too.

I wouldn't mind being in Star Trek, probably TNG for choice, as long as I was in science or engineering - away missions tend to be fatal, though TNG has much a better record than TOS.

Otherwise The Big Bang Theory; I have the physics degree (though rather out of date), but I'd have to convince them that women can be nerds too and actually like cons, SF, games etc. Their attitude does piss me off majorly, and I'm surprised Mayim Bialik hasn't called them on it.

That's what I thought - and if I get bored, I can pop into any other book I like for a change!

Star Trek is a possibility, although I am just far too suspicious of the Federation, and feel I wouldn't fit in. I'd be like that Chalet School pupil that needs reforming!

I'd have a well-working body in ST as they've solved all the diseases and genetic weaknesses, so I'd fit in a lot better in that sense. Although admittedly I'm not being good at obeying orders that are illogical. Why yes, I'm a stroppy hard case that way.

Being crap at sports (unless I had a perfect ST body), I would NOT want to be in a school story. Life gets better after school.

Oh, and before I forget! I remembered promising to revive b7friday in the autumn (I think we said fortnightly), and I was going to poke at it and post a new prompt and pimp it about again this Friday. Is that still okay with you? I have a list of prompts somewhere (somewhere! *looks about desk wildly*) or would you like to alternate (which would be once every four weeks)? I didn't want to do it without asking/warning you!

I too wonder why TBBT female characters never get to have any fun. For God's sake, play some games, go see Bladerunner, buy yourself a light sabre that goes whoosh!

I want to live in a world where I can sit and spin fine thread all day, have somebody else take care of all the peopley details of selling it, but not have to get pregnant, wear ill-fitting shoes, or die of the plague. That or a utopia with universal income and also internet. ;S

(I'm not sure I believe in a world where my brain could be cured, because so much of it is the PTSD, and what do you do with that except erase the memories? :P But a world where you could be cured would be lovely! ^_^ *hugs*)

Come with me to Storybrooke! Rumple can teach you how to spin straw into gold and you'll be made, just by spinning that every so often in between the yarn. Nothing too bad happens and you can choose between modern day life and the Enchanted Forest as you please. ;-)

(Storybrooke is great at amnesia, too. I have no idea whether or not that would actually help - probably not!!!)

That does sound like a good choice. ^_^ I haven't seen the show (and probably wouldn't enjoy it, given that you do XD), but your description makes living there as a background character sound pretty appealing. :-)

(I doubt the amnesia would actually help -- I'd probably still have PTSD and just not know why -- but it might prevent it getting any worse. XD)

I have no idea whether you'd enjoy it, or it'd drive you up the wall either. I find it a lot of fun, but plenty of people have no patience for it. But, yes, I think as minor characters, you could come hang out in the library with me and we'd have fun disagreeing about the things we like. And visit any novels we felt like! *hugs*

I suspect this *is* my fictional universe which makes the question a bit difficult to answer. But I've wanted to live in Sherwood Forest with Robin and his gang ever since Robin of Sherwood started in 1984. Not safe and not comfortable admittedly but compelling. (I'd also need a physical upgrade to 20/20 eyesight but I'll keep the schizoaffective disorder if I have to- it would fit rather well with that universe).

I think most fandoms would be worse! I mean, DW's great, but who wants to deal with invading Daleks and never being able to go shopping in Cardiff? ;-)

I think it's good that you'd be in the OUAT universe. If I knew there was a dragon in the cellar the characters of Rentaghost would soon turn up in Storybrooke;p

The OUaT universe definitely seems like a good choice out of my fandoms!

The dragon was technically maybe not in the cellar, but in a giant underground cave beneath the library, but sort of the cellar. And since any fictional characters can get their by Fairy Bus, all crossovers are possible!

I think I might choose "The Magic Roundabout". :) Most other fictional universes seem to be altogether too dangerous. (So it would have to be the MR of the TV series rather than of the film that they made.)

Some of the characters, notably Dylan and Ermintrude, seemed to be. But I don't think Dougal, Florence and Brian were. :)

Dougal and the Blue Cat's universe is definitely scary! Although I would love to meet the Cat.

OUAT does sound like a good choice - I've only seen a few random episodes, but I like your analysis. There's definitely a difference between 'favourite universe to read/watch' and 'universe I would actually want to live in'! I love LOTR and Narnia and all that sort of more-or-less medievalish magical worlds, but I don't think I'd want to live in one... Star Trek I think I'd like, I could still be a scientist and discover new planets but I'd actually be able to go and see them! And scientists aren't redshirts so I should survive ;)

Star Trek seems reasonable, especially if you can do science.

And, heh, yes, universes that are great to read about are definitely not necessarily places you'd want to live!
