For
hc_bingo's March Amnesty Challenge.
As per the comm requirements, all contain some level of hurt, comfort, or hurt/comfort. With most recs being for "isolation" rather than the other two squares. (The squares were random selections, so I only accidentally got relevant). May contain a lot of Star Wars, because it's also a relevant square for when you're having an Obi-Wan Kenobi reading splurge.
Loss of Identity
Spooks | MI5
1. You and I Like Strangers Again by
melwil
(Teen, 173 words. Ruth Evershed/Tom Quin.) Tom and Ruth don’t know each other anymore. Spoilers to 5.5
Elusive, haunting tiny ficlet as two old friends, both under new names, in new lives, pass like strangers.
Star Wars
2. Resurrection by
Lefaym
(Teen, 1193 words. Padme Amidala/Obi-Wan Kenobi.) It's hard to adapt to life as a dead woman. But not everyone sees her that way. Not quite.
Lovely, thoughtful, if still painful Padme Lives AU in which Padme bears the loss of her identity, but needs every once in a while to be with the one person who still knows who she truly is.
3. your body has become not yours only by
probablyamountain
(NR, 1273 words. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker.) Obi-Wan, for a moment, Falls. The result changes everything. Or, Obi-Wan most certainly does not have the high ground and things don’t go as expected.
Fascinating, angsty Mustafar duel AU in which Obi-Wan loses who he is for just long enough to return Anakin to himself.
Forced Soulbonding
Star Wars
4. Knight Amidala by
SassySnowperson
(Teen, 18865 words. Padme Amidala/Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Owen Lars, Beru Whitesun.) Anakin Skywalker dies, and Padmé Amidala wakes up, with all his power.
Post-RotS Padme Lives AU in which Obi-Wan pulls back at whatever is taking the life from Padme and inadvertently both draws Aankin's power into her and creates a soulbond between them. Obi-Wan raises the twins, Padme trains with Yoda and Palpatine needs to worry. This is a surprisingly plausible and excellent fixit for the Prequels, with plenty of cameos, and a happier outcome for almost everyone. Not to mention the best bit - Obi-Wan getting blindsided by an unexpected marriage proposal.
Isolation
Blake's 7
5. What Dreams May Come by
Shoshanna
(Teen, 1572 words. Kerr Avon/Cally.) After "Sarcophagus," she prefers the silence of friends.
A beautifully honest look at Cally's isolation (locked in telepathic silence among alien friends) and the painful way there's only so far Avon can go in offering any comfort.
6. Hope by
labingi
(Teen, 2690 words. Kerr Avon/Cally.) Directly after the events of "Sarcophagus," Avon and Cally try to deal with some grief and succeed in formulating a plan.
This fic has an almost identical premise and theme, even if things play out differently. Being who they are, they can only go so far, and the loss of the telepathic connection only hurts the more in an intimate situation.
Doctor Who
7. Chips by
nostalgia
(G, 1343 words. Bill Potts, Missy.) Bill visits the vault alone. She brings chips.
Brilliant look at Bill encountering Missy, trapped in the vault, and both her isolation, ameliorated by the visit and the sheer wrongness of Missy are perfectly captured. And there are chips.
8. Turning and Turning by
eponymous_rose
(G, 3692 words. Rory Williams.) Things changed. Rory stayed the same.
Beautifully done exploration of Rory's isolation-by-immortality as the Lone Centurion.
9. Doctor Who! In An Adventure (Sort Of) With Pirates! by
SeaBlueEyes
(G, 1939 words. Eighth Doctor, Lucie Miller.) There's only one thing to do when marooned on a desert island with its own cache of rum... and whatever the Doctor thinks, it isn't Scrabble or tiddlywinks. Both happen, anyway.
The Doctor and Lucie are isolated together on a desert island and have to find a way to spend the time. This is a sweet and fun missing scene that provides a much-needed spot of comfort for the two.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
10. Clocks in Venice by
citrinesunset
(G, 1326 words. Jonathan Strange/Arabella Strange.) Cursed to live in perpetual darkness, time is both relentless and meaningless for Strange.
Haunting look at Jonathan lost in the Darkness.
The Librarians (TV)
11. Chessmaster by
galaxysoup
(NR, 4714 words. Jenkins, Ezekiel Jones, Morgan Le Fay.) Immortality does provide a lot of opportunity for thought, and Jenkins has been alone in that Annex for a very long time.
Excellent exploration of Jenkins and his backstory, isolation in the Annexe - and his coming to terms with having that isolation broken by the arrival of a team of Librarians.
Once Upon a Time
12. Let Her Perish Twice Over by
Maidenjedi
(Teen, 1822 words. Belle/Rumplestiltskin, Regina Mills, Jefferson, Archie Hopper.) Belle and revenge.
Compelling and dark look at Belle, imprisoned alone for the duration of the Curse, her only comfort fantasing about getting revenge on Regina.
Star Wars
13. for when my chin is on the ground (i pick myself up) by
Phosphorescent
(G, 2268 words. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Bantha, Qui-Gon Jinn.) Obi-wan is incapable of taking care of himself, so someone has to do it. (Un)fortunately for him, that somebody just happens to be five times his size, twelve times his weight, and twice as stubborn. Or: The One Where Obi-Wan is Adopted by a Bantha.
Obi-Wan ameliorates his isolation on Tatooine by hanging round a herd of Bantha - at least one of which has definite ideas about what to do with him. This is simultaneously both sad and very funny and pretty much a delight. Unexpected Bantha-POV fic FTW.
14. Hope by
randomalia
(Teen, 850 words. Obi-Wan Kenobi.) "Your cloak," she says, taking in the heavy fall of the deep brown cloth. "It looks like a Jedi's."
Obi-Wan gets a bittersweet break in the loneliness. This is rather lovely.
15. Voices by
TheGameIsOn_Geronimo
(Teen, 4769 words. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, Padme Amidala, Bail Organa, Luke Skywalker.) There are many ghosts on Tatooine. Sometimes they speak.
Obi-Wan, alone on Tatooine with all his ghosts, only some of them literal Force ghosts, very well done.
16. Wellspring by
skatzaa
(G, 1951 words. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Shmi Skywalker.) Ben meditates, and meets a ghost. She's just not the ghost he's been expecting.
This is an unexpected and lovely combination, beautifully done, and giving Obi-Wan a brief respite in his isolation.
