When in desperate straits, meme
May. 8th, 2015 05:42 pmI think it's fair to say I'm pretty depressed right now & it is about time to cease the wallowing in despair and things, really. Shall we try a meme?
Give me a number and a pairing & I'll write a drabble or ficlet!
1. glad you came
2. team
3. don't lie
4. i'm coming home
5. story of my life
6. falling down
7. clarity
8. counting stars
9. wake me up
10. safe and sound
11. lose yourself
12. in the sun
13. the monster
14. burn
15. sweet nothing
16. i'm with you
17. we believe
18. thanks for the memories
19. anything could happen
20. little talks
21. the pretender
22. by the way
23. sanctuary
24. paradise
25. where is my mind
(Any two characters will do if you don't want a pairing, just use an '&'. Not that if you apply a '/' romance will necessarily happen, because this is me. But I do try. Any fandom you think I know is fine. I shall just say if you come up with anything I don't know or really can't do.)

Re: Two, Jamie, & Zoe, i'm with you, 173 words
Date: 2015-05-09 01:26 pm (UTC)I haven't met these three yet, but they seem pretty delightful here, and definitely consistent with my experience of Doctor Who! I like it!

Date: 2015-05-09 01:42 pm (UTC)This is them. I went for the 1968/9 Team TARDIS, because I did. You're right about pretty much all of them being great, though. :-)

Date: 2015-05-09 03:20 pm (UTC)I've recently started watching Doctor Who from the very beginning, in 1963, and I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone, and delighted by how many of my favorite things are already in place. I put off watching Doctor Who for years because its vastness was intimidating to me, but now the fact that there's so much of it makes me happy. It's one of those things that makes me feel better about being human when it seems like we can't get our shit together. Whether it should or not, I don't know.

Date: 2015-05-09 04:51 pm (UTC)Oh, how wonderful! I know 1960s UK TV is not the easiest to watch, but I really do adore the original TARDIS team. Ian and Barbara remain two of the very best companions ever - they're so real and grounded and likeable. (Well, I think so. I hope you're liking them too.)

*nods a lot* I think this is one of the reasons Doctor Who exists. It's such a messy, funny old thing, with bits that are dull, bits that are just bad, and bits that are amazing, and then together it's just such a joyous adventure that never takes itself too seriously.
This vidder always seems to have such a good handle on that sort of spirit of the show when she makes multi-era vids. This one was her latest (though it was made in 2011). It wouldn't embed this time, but I don't think there's anything to be spoilered with, not really, and it's lovely:
The Adventure

Date: 2015-05-09 05:41 pm (UTC)Thank you for the link to "The Adventure;" it's perfect! So much running! So many hugs! What a perfect song! I feel like I might end up watching this one a lot (I have already watched it twice).
Re: Two, Jamie, & Zoe, i'm with you, 173 words
Date: 2015-05-11 05:08 pm (UTC)Yay! This is the right and proper way of things. :-) (DW fandom does not agree about much, but everyone who's ever watched any First Doctor stuff agrees that Ian and Barbara are awesome.)
Where are you up to, btw? And I shall be careful not to be spoilery.
I'm glad you liked The Adventure. It's just gorgeous.
Re: Two, Jamie, & Zoe, i'm with you, 173 words
Date: 2015-05-11 05:49 pm (UTC)It's such a delight to see (what I think of as) the essential companion role already established this early: be kind where you can, don't take too much bullshit, and try to keep the Doctor from messing up too badly.
In the new series, I just finished watching s6 episode 4, "The Doctor's Wife."
And! a Doctor Who NOVEL featuring Jamie and Zoe just appeared at the used bookstore! Do you have any thoughts on tie-in novels? Are they good? Spoliery? Outside your experience?

The question here is, which one was it? If it was a Target novelisation, then it is just that - a novelisation of one of the TV serials, so that would be spoilery for you. (They vary, but some of them are pretty cool and have some extra things in. Terrance Dicks was a thing we had instead of DVDs/VHS/the internet back in the day.) OR it might be a Virgin Missing Adventure (although I am not sure I can think of a Two-Jamie-Zoe VMA), or it is a BBC Past Doctor Adventure, and in both those cases, there is a good chance of it being pretty good, though it depends who wrote it although also with a strong chance of much angst.
So, er, it depends? ;-)

Date: 2015-05-11 07:45 pm (UTC)There are also three Broadway Paperbacks with Matt Smith on the cover. Matt Smith is my current Doctor, so even though these are also "all-new adventures," I will not try to read them until I finish out his run (also, one of them has Clara, who I have not met yet).
I LOVE ANGST. Doctor Angst is some pretty high-quality angst in my experience.

Haha. I lived through the 90s when the only canon we had was the New Adventures and they were set on making every past companion die and suffer without end. And then it changed to BBC Books, except they wound up no more cheerful and killed a few old companions who had managed to survive the first set. There are limits! (Or, no, it seems not...)

:(
Now I feel bad for saying that I love angst. I DO, but companions should live long and happy lives; the lifespan mismatch is already enough of an angstportunity without adding any bonus suffering. :(
